Morning Roundup: Safety Hazards Edition

2008_0820_MR.jpgGood morning, D.C. We hope you didn't have plans to take an Amtrak or MARC Penn line train early this morning, as rail service between Washington and Baltimore was halted after a man was struck by an Acela Express train near New Carrollton just after 5 a.m. The Man, whom the Post identified as a maintenance worker, was airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition -- one report says he died, though that has yet to be confirmed. It's still unclear how he was hit by the train. Both MARC and Amtrak service resumed after 7 a.m., but delays of about an hour were expected. Be sure to check all train schedules for delays before heading to Union Station this morning.

D.C. School Renovations Won't Be Done on First Day: We know, you're all shocked to read a headline like this one. The Post details the word from the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization's Allen Lew, who admitted yesterday that some construction will not be finished on time for the first day of school on Monday. Four schools in particular, Browne Education Center, Emery Education Center, Eliot-Hine Middle School, and Raymond Elementary, are apparently rather far from being finished, though Lew said that none of the work will prevent the schools from opening on time. Teachers and staff at Eliot-Hine were not allowed inside the building yesterday due to unsafe conditions related to construction.

Obama Back in Va.: Everyone's speculating on who Sen. Barack Obama will pick as his running mate, and the Washington Times notes that with the senator in Virginia for a campaign event today, all eyes are back on Gov. Tim Kaine. Could Obama make an announcement today? Tomorrow? On Saturday at his big pre-convention rally in Illinois? What day do you think he'll announce his pick?

Briefly Noted: D.C. man sentenced to 20 years for rape and stabbing ... Man shot multiple times in Montgomery Village.

Obama/Gore would be the real "Dream Ticket," and I got five on it.

Obama is going to confuse the shit out of everybody and pick McCain as his running mate.

Kudos to InsideCharmCity for breaking the Penn Line MARC story before any of the regular media.

When all the kids come back to class, they can help finish up the school repairs. Sort of like the Amish building a barn. But school kids installing boilers and doing asbestos decontamination.

Is it just me, or does the guy on the left of that picture look like Lou Pearlman, infamous manager of the Backstreet Boys and NSync?

Schools not ready--there's a dog-bites-man story. But how can this possibly be? I thought Allen Lew was part of Mayor BlackBerry's omni-competent, make-the-dirt-fly brain trust. I thought all our problems would be magically solved by cleaning out a few incompetent central office types? Where did I go wrong?

He does look like Lou Pearlman. Maybe he got pardoned and is hiding out in town.

Oh, come on! There's no way Lou would only take up one seat on the metro!

Well, you know prison can be a good weight loss program for some people.

I need to know what happened in DCist one year ago today!!! I cant go on.

The last time DCPS got all its renovations done by the first day of school, the kids were dressed in Lord Fauntleroy outfits with their books tied up with a belt, rolling hoops to school, and smoking loveboat because they couldn't afford at crack £2 thruppence a rock. Came in little wax paper origami bags. There's some craftmanship for you.

No way, Big Lou is a candidate for getting shanked in shower these days.

re: the guy on the left - I just want to know what he was thinking with those socks. Yellow? With grey dockers and brown shoes? Ugh.

maybe he can make nice like Martha and whip up some crab apple jelly

re: the guy on the left - I just want to know what he was thinking with those socks. Yellow? With grey dockers and brown shoes? Ugh.

Reason #89 to avoid public transportation.

the yellow sock/grey docker/brown shoe dad seriously looks like my old roommate's father who WOULD wear yellow/grey/brown and think nothing of it.

All the more reason for Metro to implement "value-added" services like pole dancers and table service. Give people a chance to dress up a little, enjoy the ride, and use those fives and ones to stuff into thongs. And how many times have you been stuck in a sweltering tunnel after a long day's work and though to yourself, "Goddamn! I could really go for a Lime Rickey Retardo right now?" The London Tube manages to stay in operation and everyone there is sh!tfaced at all hours. Commuting needs to stop looking like "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" and start looking like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Remember in November: A vote for Obama/Monkeyrotica is a vote for strippers and top-shelf hooch on the Metro.

It's still unclear how he was hit by the train.
Seems pretty clear to me. 1. Man on tracks. 2. Train on tracks. 3. Train on man.

It's not like these newfangled Acela trains jump off the tracks and snag unsuspecting maintenance workers as they zoom by at 100+ MPH.

And don't those two look like they belong in a strip club anyway?

Not on stage, of course, but in the audience. Unless you're one of those sickos who's into yellow socks and DILF porn.

Only 25 people boarded the 5am Acela train at Union Station...Is that good or bad?

maybe those are his sunnyday/feel good socks?

Shooting in Montgomery Village? WTF? I thought crime didn't happen in the suburbs.

*looks at neighborhood in news story*

Nevermind. That neighborhood is actually pretty rough, and has gone downhill more since I used to catch the bus there. I'm not surprised.

~EEE~

Come to think of it ... I've seen those two guys going into CAMELOT all the time!!!!
