McCain Picks Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin

2008_0828_palin.jpgEvery blogger in America is scrambling to pull together some kind of background information on Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain named as his running mate this morning. The hits are generally these: She's been governor for a little under two years; she used to be a sports reporter and later mayor of Wasilla City; she took second place in the 1984 Miss Alaska contest; she's super pro-life. She's also being investigated by the Alaska state legislature on allegations that she fired her ex-brother-in-law from his job as a state trooper for personal reasons.

Thanks to this cover of Alaska Magazine, of all the new words that have been born out of this election season (P.U.M.A., e.g.) , the one that seems the most horrifyingly likely to spread like wildfire has to be VILF. We're waiting on you, Urban Dictionary.

Consider this an open thread to discuss McCain's choice.

UPDATE: Monkeyrotica notes in comments that there is already a movement for VPILF, as opposed to VILF.

i'd hit it

Actually, the correct term is VPILF.

Hottest VPILF since Aaron Burr got his ass shot.

she's an attractive older woman, but seriously, i wouldn't describe her as "hot". she's much hotter than Joe Biden though.

i think this is a poor choice on his part. given that he could fall over dead any day now, how many voters are going to want a woman with very little political experience to take over the role of President? McCain is always ripping on Obama saying that he doesn't have enough experience, so why choose her?

i really don't understand what she brings to the table. maybe he's thinking that all of the voters who would have voted for Hillary (feminists) will now be enticed to vote for the ticket that has a woman on it.

that's it, exactly, mcgillicuddy. seems almost like a pander to me, really. the repubs can't say anything about the democratic ticket having a lack of foreign policy experience now...

"a woman with very little political experience"

What the heck? Obama is running for president and he has about the same political experience as Palin. She is the VP, not presidential candidate.

yeah, definitely hurts McCain's argument that a 40-something with relatively little experience is unfit for the executive branch...

she's much hotter than Joe Biden though.

Clearly, you've never seen "Vinegar Joe" in booty shorts.

@MS - anyone who is picked as a VP running mate should be fit for fulfilling the role of the President. i don't see how a former sports writer/beauty queen who has been the governor of the wilderness for two years makes her qualified for anything more than fly fishing.

maybe he's thinking that she'll give us the green flag to drill for oil up in Alaska.

Pumas and Cougars everywhere, unite!

Boniva break!

@ McGillicuddy-

I think you need to replace 'feminists' with 'women'... Most feminists - men and women- I know (including myself) wouldn't vote for a republican candidate simply because Hillary Clinton lost to Barack Obama. And if they say they would, then I think they need to do put their thinking caps back on because voting for McCain specifically and Republicans more generally is antithetical to much of what feminists are working for - equal pay for equal work, access to safe and legal abortions (even if they themselves are pro-life), eliminating sexist practices (hello! McCain's ex-wife?!?), etc.

On the other hand, there are plenty of women who don't identify with feminism and may indeed feel jilted by Hillary's loss so much that they would be willing to throw their vote at someone, anyone other than Obama - especially if that ticket had a woman as VP...

Did McCain just nominate Laura Roslin to be his VP?

We vote for the presidential candidate, not the VP pick. Of course you want someone with experience and Palin has that.

What is more troubling is that you seem to discount Palin but forget that Obama, the presidential pick for the Democrats, is equally inexperenced. At best the Democrat ticket should be reversed --- Biden/Obama, not Obama/Biden.

A McCain/Palin ticket is a very sound one in terms of experence.

Palin has experience? I'd appreciate some links showing that.

Obama has experience? I'd appreciate some links showing that.

I agree IMGOPH this is most definitely pandering. I actually find it somewhat insulting that McCain chose Palin purely because she is woman, I'd bet her name wouldn't have even been considered if the democratic ticket were both white males. Its like I'll see your minority and raise you my minority.

Picking Palin is pandering... How do you know that? Palin is a reform minded governor who has actually fought against her own political party. She is def. more of a reformer and change agent than Obama.

"As for the prospect of her being vice president, Palin told Kudlow that she could not answer the question of whether she wanted the job “until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day. I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here….”

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25970882/

@MS We've already heard for quite some time that Obama has "little experience." However, I'm referring to YOUR comment that states that Palin is some experience, considering that you didn't bother with a cogent response, I guess I have to do your work for you.

Obama's Political experience involves seven years as a State Legislature and 3 years as a Senator, whereas Palin's experience is a City Council member for 4 years, the mayor of Wasilla for 6 and Governor for 2. At this point we can all bicker about City Council versus state positions versus governor versus Senator.

ms: orly? she's a reformer? just because you aren't as corrupt as the rest of the party honchos in your state doesn't make you a reformer. care to explain away the firing of the state trooper?

I am merely pointing out that if Palin isn't qualified then by the same argument Obama is not as well.

At any rate, Obama is running against McCain. Palin is the VP pick.

I cannot vote for you, Ms. Palin, no matter how much you look like Liz Lemon's popular older sister.

Also, agreed on the pandering. If Hillary supporters actually fall for this cynical ploy, we should consider tweaking the 19th amendment. McCain dangling this woman in front of all the Hillary supporters out there is vaguely reminiscent, I think, of a seal trainer with a bucket of fish.

i think McCain just shot himself in the foot with this pick, which is just fine with me. it's going to be fun to watch this one unfold as she fumbles her way through the election.

Direct comparisons of the two tickets on foreign policy experience and expected fiscal relief (i.e., climbing out of the black hole of debt that Bush and Cheney and Rove dug for us) seem pretty simple in light of this announcement.

There can be no question whatsoever as to Biden's value as a veteran statesman with many, many years of foreign policy experience. Palin will never be able to touch that... and with McCain's blatantly hawkish tendencies (imagine how much he'd spend in Iraq, and gearing up in the growing tensions with Russia and China!), it seems certain we'd be in for 4 to 8 more years of military spending in the wrong places, whereas Obama is prepared to fight the return of trickle-down Reaganomics and may live up to the promise of being the second coming (fiscally) of Clinton. Yeah, say what you will about Clinton, but does anyone remember the budget surplus? Surplus.

Diplomacy and fiscal turnaround vs. military spending.

Well, i would hold off on having a cougar and puma meeting in Alaska. Palin or her supporters might shoot at you from a helicopter.

Woah, Dcist, get it right!
Wasilla is just Wasilla .
It's never been referred to as "Wasilla City" (in Alaska we only have municipalities or burroughs...)

And she fired the Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monagan, who was NOT her ex-brother in law. HE refused to fire her ex brother in law, which some people think lead to his firing.

from a CNN article:

"Congressional Quarterly said her past occupations included being a commercial fishing company owner, outdoor recreational equipment company owner and sports reporter."

that experience is going to come in real handy. at least she may not shoot a fellow hunter like Cheney did.

i can't wait for the VP debates. Biden is going to chew her up and spit her out.

Um, MS, Obama was elected to the US Senate in 2004. Palin won the Alaskan Governorship in 2006. Both have been involved in community-based public service since the early 90's. But the argument that either candidate has more experience than the other misses the point anyway.

Both Senators and governors serve in highly visible positions of great responsibility and influence. The question is not who has the most experience, but who has the right experience. Specifically, the best candidate for President is the one who has the judgment, foresight, and respect for all Americans which will ensure that their future experiences after being elected to office will best serve the common good and needs of this country. Obama has stood for poor families who can not afford to send their children to school or to the doctor, for women who are denied equal pay for equal work, for the troops and veterans who defend our freedom, for workers who have lost their jobs to globalization and a trickle-down system which has been siphoned by the wealthy, for immigrants and minorities who have been prejudged and discriminated into the margins, and for the next generations of patriotic and idealistic Americans who together face new issues and must rise to the challenges that face America today and in the future -- all of whom have largely been ignored by the Republican platform and office-holders whose "values" and priorities are obsolete relics of a sheltered and self-centered past.

Obama has the right experience, and is the best leader to continue building on, strengthening, and securing an even more important measure: the American Experience. The past 8 years are proof of the harm that can be done to a nation by leaders who only represent the interests of a privileged few...the next administration must undo this damage, and Obama and Biden have displayed the wisdom, inspiration, and resolute action that our greatest Presidents have always embodied.

I was not surprised by this pick. It seemed an obvious move given the support Hillary was able to gather. Although in this case he is totally pandering to the women voters. He really must think we're stupid or that we'll blindly support a woman no matter what she stands for.

And what is this "lack of experience" argument? Other than being governors did Clinton or Bush have any experience being president? No. Unless you've been the president you don't have the experience to do it no matter how many years you've been in public service. Once you're in the office the intelligence agencies and heads of the military get you up to speed pretty damn quickly and tell you stuff that you had no clue about even if you worked in Congress. That doesn't require experience, that requires a pair of ears and a working brain.

I'm just glad he didn't pick Huckabee or Romney. Ugh, gives me chills just thinking about it...

@Flapjack: I really don't know if Palin is any better than Huckabee or Romney as she is very anti-choice.

There is also the matter of being picked just because she has a vagina. Now tell me, what does that say about how the Republican party views women?

I'd totally drill in her ANWR!

On a more serious note, it's kinda cool that the VP nominee is from Alaska, and the Prez nominee is from Hawaii. That last two states finally get to represent!

Clinton was governor of Arkansas for roughly 10 years and had lived/breathed politics since he was a kid.

Bush was governor of Texas and i'm sure most of us wish he still was. he's still not qualified to be president.

true, you can't really prepare anyone to be president, but Mrs. Palin seriously looks very green in every aspect. as Chuck Schumer says, McCain's pick is a "Hail Mary pass".

This VP pick is hilarious and reeks of desperation. I LOVE it! McCain has decided that he can't win unless he throws a Hail Mary. It is a transparent gimmick to woo Hillary voters and wrest the "change" mantle from Obama. It is the Republican Party whining "Waaa! We're historically progressive too! Waaa!" Kudos, McCain, you have just tanked your campaign. I LOVE it!

Fox News is soiling themselves in ecstasy over Palin. You can practically smell the Astroglide.

I'm rather indifferent to Palin myself, but for those thinking it's a terrible choice, who would you have picked in that position? All the big name candidates had big negatives attached. Please don't say Lieberman, since that was never going to happen.

This pick of Palin with a bear rug has been floating around the internets. Just had to share it.

Experience, particularly foreign policy experience, should be at the top of the ticket. As for Biden, he looks even more phony next to a VP nominee like Palin with his sh*t eating grin and head full of doll hair. VP's are mainly about optics and filling gaps on the top of the ticket. Good pick by McCain

Dear Penthouse Forum,

You won't believe this, but I was cleaning the Governor of Alaska's pool when she asked me inside for a glass of lemonade...

by "filling gaps on the top of the ticket", do you mean the vagina/minority gap?

I cannot vote for you, Ms. Palin, no matter how much you look like Liz Lemon's popular older sister.

Comment of the Week

Bingo.

And Chuck Schumer is the biggest douche in DC.

The debate about lack of experience here is really getting frustrating at best and pissing me off at worst. Palin has a major lack of experience. Swell. Fab. Isn't the cornerstone of Obama's ENTIRE campaign change, fresh perspective and new blood from outside of Washington? I'm sure I could quote part of his speech from last night, but I don't remember much as I invented a personal drinking game to drink every time the word change was said.

In conclusion: Maybe this will cause both parties to stop going on and on...and on and on about lack of experience. If not, well...more reason not to pay my cable bill between now and November.

kippers - I love your Marge Schott avatar.

Oh wait, say what now?

monkey, you've got me thinking...

if Palin agreed to be nude at all times, i may in fact vote for McCain. they'd have to buy some new convertible limousines too. i'd be OK with being held up by her procession down Mass Ave every morning if i could catch a glimpse of some VP tah-tah's and hoo-hah.

This is pretty fascinating, because this is the darkest of dark horse picks. She clearly has a number of major pluses: 1) she is a woman (whether it's pandering or not, this will be a significant plus); 2) she is a reformer in a state that is very well known to be plagued with corruption; 3) if there is a place in the US that is farthest away from DC it would be Alaska, so she doesn't have to lay claim to being an outsider (it's understood); 4) judging by her speech at lunch, she is a much better speaker than I would have expected from an effective political nobody; and 5)energy issues are about to become a HUGE issue and she can bring that experience (as little as it is) to the table. There are other pluses to that are less understood. For one, this will help Rep. Young and Sen. Stevens in their AK reelections. Having a home-stater at the top of the ticket WILL bring in votes.

There are serious draw backs. Picking someone from Alaska is great to neutralize the Electoral votes from Delaware, but not much else. Also, since she is a true unknown, if she cracks under the strain of a national campaign, that will be REALLY bad for McCain. It's hard to say what will happen with the look of pandering to women voters; this will have to play out more, but could be devastating if it goes against them. As well, she does have significantly less experience than Obama. Mayor of a town of 5500 people for 10 years, then two years as gov of one of the least populous states is pretty skimpy; even comparing it against an IL state senator for 7 years and 4 years as US Senator. Let's remember, if she is elected, she is literally a heart beat away from the presidency, and experience with big issues may not be required, but it certainly is a big plus.

Someone above said you vote for President and not for VP. That's not accurate (or not what your vote really says); you are voting for the ticket of President and VP. Otherwise, VP really would mean nothing. This will be interesting to see how it gets played out.

All you haters are going to be sorry when Mccain nominates Heidi and Spencer to the Supreme Court.

I mean really sorry.

Marge Schott? I thought that was Hillary.

Tina Fey just got the job she's been waiting her life for

I too find Gov. Palin physically attractive and would like to engage in sexual congress with her.

These somewhat perverse thoughts need to be shared with the world at large. I would truly be doing humanity a disservice if these thoughts, which are important and insightful, remained only with myself.

Everyone here will take much enjoyment and insight from the fact that I, completely anonymous to everyone here, find Gov. Palin attractive and would like to have sex with her.

To those of you who fear that this will be the only time you'll read of my unfulfilled libido being directed at someone mentioned in a story with zero sexual content, I say to you, do not worry. If I do not find the time to comment on the attractiveness of any interview or article subject, my brethren, like in mind and spirit, will surely carry on the torch for me. For there are many, if given the chance, we would like to have sex with because they are pretty.

I understand if you want to reward me, in some way, for providing you with the insight into what is no doubt an amazing mind. Trust me when I say the fact that my words will make you smarter, happier and more complete is reward enough. For I, boondoggle, would hit that without thinking twice.

Arguing her experience versus Obama's is a win for the dark side, just by having that conversation.

It certainly reeks of an "I hear people care what women think now, we'd better get us one" mentality. Then they found out Margaret Thatcher was unavailable (McCain was a foot masseuse in the Thatcher Revolution) so they went with someone who looks the part.

Regardless, this will be a Bush/McCain ticket from the Dem POV. You don't get votes running against Palin and I hope JoeB doesn't set out to wipe the floor with her. Gets them nothing. He can concentrate on Cheney bashing, a sport everyone enjoys and find out what lgeislation she has championed akin to the Violence Against Women Act.

Bush is the big negative, Palin the tiny obscure positive. Delaware and Alaska on the ticket though. Shocker.

It's hard to claim that Obama has more experience than Palin. She has ran a state whereas he has run a campaign. I'd give her the edge there.

Also, Palin has taken on corruption in her state whereas Obama has embraced corrupt Chicago machine politics. She gets a big edge there.

"Vote McCain, because you know you want to have sex with my running mate."

"Vote McCain. Sure you wanted Hillary, but my running mate is much better looking than she is and her husband is a pro snowmobile rider. Cool, huh?"

"Vote McCain. It's your choice: a black guy or a woman?"

please, please let there be some nude photos of Palin online somewhere, perhaps laying on a bearskin rug in front of a roaring fire. you know that the McCain team spent hours and hours online searching for such photos.

This pick by McCain will be sure to frustrate many on both sides of the aisle (shooting self in foot vs. pandering). But, I was truly upset by NPR and Washington Journal coverage of Democrats considering voting red after Obama's speech last night as if going red was their only recourse.

Let's spare everyone the debate on how people voting independent would feel like their vote wouldn't count, etc. etc. But, I guess I am curious to hear these same people react to the Palin tap. Would they scurry back to Obama? Or are they dumber than we thought and actually believe there's a reason to support a McCain-Palin ticket by virtue that she's a woman.

After such a gaffe by the McCain camp, there's got to be more reason than ever to reconsider a movement toward breaking the two party mold..

Good grief! That McCain/Palin banner ad was put up quick.

Palin kind of reminds me of the fairy godmother from Shrek. Palin=Shrek Fairy Godmother

boondoggle, well done. Hmm, you say men do thing Just because they're attracted to a woman? Hmmm, tell me more...

Following on that logic does leave me wondering: is McCain "advertising" his campaign by virtue of an attractive woman? Hmm, I wonder where he would've come up with that? ...You don't think his wife thought it up... Yup, this smacks of beer commercial selfpromotion alllll over it.

Just sit back, look at that banner, and tell me if that says "President and Vice President of the United States" to you. It doesn't really for me. Like, at all.

oh! And, she plays the flute. Make of that what you will. ;)

Just to chip more into the debate:

How is it that education and learning have been attacked as weaknesses by the GOP this election cycle? Isn't it a crucial part of the point of school to equip us to work better and make successful decisions in our careers? Education is not elitist. The exclusive access to education based on the wealth into which one is born, rather than individual potential and achievement, is elitist.

Further, education helps people lead the most successful, secure, and adaptable lives. Denying or limiting access to education robs people of this potential and ability to thrive, harming their livelihood. Instead of contributing even more to their families, communities, and country, these people are unjustly left unable to compete. Potential brilliance must not be extinguished, yet conservative politics does just that in order to maintain policies that favor them at the expense of the common good.

Here's how our current tickets stack up:

Obama - Occidental College/Columbia Univ., Harvard Law School Biden - Univ. of Delaware, Syracuse Univ.

Mc Cain - US Naval Academy, National War College
Palin - University of Idaho

I'm not saying any of these schools are better than the others but just want to stress the fact that--along with public service experience--education factors directly into the capacity of our candidates to govern and administrate successfully with the country's best interests at the forefront.

And yes, ksf4, McCain would've had a much more compelling pick in Lieberman. Of course as a "maverick" who refuses to cow to party divisions, McCain clearly picked the moderate and independent force to his ticket, and not just another conservative to pander to his right-wing base. Oh wait...

Palin is indeed a woman, but she's no Hillary Clinton. And anyone who takes just the tiniest peek beneath the surface will easily see through the ruse to realize that Palin represents pandering and not progress. This election is largely about change. But a superficial change in the appearance or gender of our candidates does nothing to bring about the true changes that America needs in order to repair and uphold our economy, defense and security, system of education, access to healthcare, fight to eliminate poverty, retirement and social security, standing in international politics, preparedness for emergency, immigration law and enforcement, environmental sustainability, justice, equality, the civil rights and liberties for all Americans including minorities, and most importantly our Constitution. Obama and Biden have experience pursuing these crucial goals; whereas McCain is out of touch with the issues, and Palin doesn't even try to grasp them and instead dangles as a marionette to the church, corporations, cronyism, and codified discrimination against gays and non-Christians. Also, there is moral hypocrisy (if not insanity) in being pro-life and anti-abortion with an "absolute respect for life," but being okay with killing for war or capital punishment.

Life has nuance, gray areas, ambiguity, uncertainty, and duality (multiplicity, really) of truth/meaning and right/wrong. McCain and Palin approach these challenges with their minds obstinately made up along divisive party lines and wedge issues, and turn blind eyes to changing realities. Obama and Biden acknowledge the difficulty and complexity of successful government, and approach the issues with open minds, critical thought, astute judgment, open minds, compassionate hearts, unyielding patriotism, and commitment to the common good and the needs of America.

Corruption? Well, if firing a guy who drives his own state patrol car drunk and tasers his 11-year son is wrong then I don't want to be right.

What would have been worse is if this screw up wasn't fired because it would have looked political. Besides the tapped conservation between Palin's aides and the state troopers supports Palin's story.

You know, I thought Hillary was a little too into pandering and low-blows for me, but I, nor anyone I knew ever had doubts about her being bright or able enough to be an effective president.

Palin strikes me total lightweight. As mentioned earlier, she is toast in the debate with regards to foreign policy and the economy. Actually, they're both toast in the debates, but that didn't stop GWB. *sigh*

"Kudos, McCain, you have just tanked your campaign. I LOVE it! "

Careful, democrats, you were SO sure that Kerry was going to win the election in 2004 too! Anything can happen in politics.

And for the pandering "we're not stupid" feminists on this board ... McCain isn't trying to sway your vote! You'd shave your armpits before you vote Republican, but there are plenty of middle of the road soccer moms who liked Hillary because she was a fellow strong woman ... not because they were flaming liberals. They might be swayed...

You'd shave your armpits before you vote Republican...

that's brilliant. :)

Absolutely brilliant move on McCains part!

You could see his fear and "holy shit I can't believe I had to pick this lightweight" face during the announcement, but it will pay off. The elder statesman picks a PTA member from the hinterlands, you know he is in dire straits. Someone pulled the “Pander, pander, pander now!” alarm at the GOP. From the looks of it they said, “we need a GOP woman stat!” and someone hopped on a seaplane and literally pulled her off of an elk carcass outside of ANWR mid-feeding.

She is a WOMAN, OMG the GOP is progressive too! Awesome! Not only is she a woman, but she is a pretty, white, god-fearing, pro-life, sports-mom, military-man-marrying, over-breeding, gun-loving, beauty-pageant running, oil-loving (takes sexy bubble baths in crude), fishing, hunting, “hell, I still have moose blood on my face" woman.

Which we all knows is America's favorite type of woman! Heee yaaaw!

This is going to be HUGE.

Oh, and people of all genders, persuasions, and dalliances, would like to tap that. I remember seeing her on Charlie Rose a year ago (or so) and an entire room of mixed genders agreed that yes, we would all engage in national scandal inducing acts with that.

Chyna is also a fellow strong woman. That doesn't mean either she or Palin would, if elected, progress the interests of soccer moms and other women.

omg, FR has made the most sense of anyone on this thread!

Picking a VP is a president's first decision, and McCain made a poor decision. And I can't wait for the VP debates, will be reminiscent of a 1980s Tyson match.

"Governor Palin, given Senator Biden's rapt response on his commitment and proven track record improving life for American women, what do you have to say about your experiences in this respect?"

"Ummm...I guess...I guess I'm a woman...that's it."

that experience is going to come in real handy. at least she may not shoot a fellow hunter like Cheney did.

Yeah, but remember, it was the other guy's fault. He got in the way.

Oh come on run for the hills. Give the woman at least some respect.

And speaking of shaving, I'd shave my panda before I become a libertarian.

great. Now I have a crazy shaved panda amputee running from Palin who keeps on trying to kill it with an unnecessary high powered rifle stuck in my head.

Oh gawd. now she's laying on the shaved panda rug nekked.

I had the impression from the moment i heard mcCain's announcement that he was shoring up Christian Right wing backing - not so much pandering to the women voters.

Not only is she a woman, but she is a pretty, white, god-fearing, pro-life, sports-mom, military-man-marrying, over-breeding, gun-loving, beauty-pageant running, oil-loving (takes sexy bubble baths in crude), fishing, hunting, “hell, I still have moose blood on my face" woman.

speaking of over-breeding, apparently they ran out of good names: Track? Bristol? Willow? Trig? Well, willow is just sort of hippy-weird, but Trig and Track are totally bizarre.

"Obama and Biden acknowledge the difficulty and complexity of successful government, and approach the issues with open minds, critical thought, astute judgment, open minds, compassionate hearts, unyielding patriotism, and commitment to the common good and the needs of America"

Time will tell ...maybe. They sure seem to talk the talk. But when the time comes we are going to expect whoever we elect to make appropriate decisions in a NY minute with little time for indecision.

The misogyny in some of these comments, both thinly-veiled and overt, is astounding.

The most fun part of the day has been watching Obama supporters so vehemently claim they do not feel threatened by the Palin pick, then proceed to flip - the - fuck - out.

If you're really not worried by it, your reaction would be like the Republicans to Biden: "meh"

@ kelly5612, I hear you and apologize for our mouth breathing selves. However I find the misogyny inherent in using a completely irrelevant female novice politician as a pawn and living campaign poster to appease right-wing nutjobs, when there are many qualified female and male candidates out there is astounding.

@TLB

I see what you mean, but I think the "meh" was because Biden was seen as a safe, predictable and competent choice.

Having a total newbie be that close to the Presidency of an older guy with a history of health scares...well, it gets a reaction.

erahk0, I realize that Obama and Biden are politicians. But they have free will in choosing what policies they support, and what words they use to promote them. Further, neither one agrees 100% along party lines, and it is up to them where to differ and where to agree. So assuming they'll at least try to accomplish some of the items on their platform, Obama/Biden would start off in a much better direction than McCain. And I have faith that they, along with all those tens of millions of active supporters out there will keep the momentum through the election, and turn speech and ideas into action and change. Sure no candidate is perfect (except Colbert!), but at least I respect and appreciate most of what the Dems stand for. Whereas the Republicans like to treat gays, women, ethnic minorities, the poor, children, the middle class, the ailing, prisoners, and anyone who doesn't ignorantly and hypocritically thump a bible around all like shit...and that discrimination extends from their platform through their speeches all the way into failed government.

And kelly5612, I believe most of the misogyny in the comments is intended in jest...which might not necessarily be PC, but isn't as bad as putting someone onto the ticket just because she is a woman. All that matters is the content of a candidate's character and their actions...who they are and what they do. Not their gender, race, physical ability, religion, etc. Just like refusing to vote for someone just because they're black is racist, to vote for someone solely because they're a woman is sexist.

I'll admit that it's crude to say stuff like, "There is also the matter of being picked just because she has a vagina." But that's a joke...and is intended to be derogatory toward McCain's campaign and not women, vaginae, or Sarah Palin's vagina. However, McCain clearly selected his running mate not because out of all the VP options she adds the strongest character, soundest actions, or closest working compatibility to his ticket. Palin is far from the most vocal or visible conservative. McCain picked her because she is a woman, and could be argued to have a remote chance of being groomed, packaged, and presented as a decent running mate. But to vote for someone so mediocre just because she is a woman in fact subverts the idea that women can achieve equally to men.

Hillary was an amazing candidate, and would make a great president. That is why she got so far -- she deserves all her success and recognition. So does Obama. And McCain, and Biden. But Palin has done nothing to deserve national recognition thus far. She is a political lightweight, and a questionable governor. And putting her onto the ticket despite these shortcomings versus the other Republican "shortlisters" should come across as an insult to anyone who respects all women and men, as long as they have just a shred of intelligence or critical thought.

Ok...weekend time! Enjoy it, everyone!

But can she attack dog? She was "Miss Congeniality" in the 1984 Miss Alaska contest.

Oh, BTW!

I have a feeling that the GOP has the wrong idea in mind when they imagine voters "pulling the lever" with Palin in mind.

"Hillary was an amazing candidate" That's the funniest thing i've seen all week ..thanks for that!

I'm loving how the Jezebel crowd is going apeshit over the fact that Palin deliberately decided to give birth to a Down's Syndrome baby rather than tear it apart with her bare hands and eat it.

>"Hillary was an amazing candidate" That's the funniest thing i've seen all week ..thanks for that!

Almost as funny as 'Hussein would make a good President'.

"I am merely pointing out that if Palin isn't qualified then by the same argument Obama is not as well."

I think we are forgetting about judgement. If you don't have experience, then you MUST have judgement.

Obama's resume is thin, but he has fleshed out a very nuanced and intelligent position on just about everything. I don't agree with all his positions, but they are obviously the product of a very smart person, and most of them, especially for foreign policy ones, show a great deal of sound judgement.

And Obama mounted a stunning political campaign, trouncing Hillary Clinton and everyone else.

Palin has yet to make such statements. Quite recently she readily admitted that she doesn't follow foreign policy matters (I think the quote was from about two years ago).

All I've seen from Palin so far is a willingness to support the Bush/Cheney doctrines of the past 8 years.

That doesn't show good judgement.

But I'd do her husband.

I think what's more important here is what this says about McCain.

He's taking a huge gamble on his VP pick. And so far his entire argument against Obama has been Obama's lack of experience.

Then he goes and picks a VP with no experience? And, more troubling, one that he doesn't even know? If he knew her for years at least he could claim the he knows for sure that her judgement is top-notch, overcoming her lack of experience. But he can't make that claim, since he doesn't know her.

McCain is 72. There's a pretty good chance he'll die in office. And this is his pick? Why? Because she's hard core anti-abortion and is a woman? That's more important to him than Commander in Chief credentials?

To me this pick shows his cynicism more than anything.

But, still, I'd do her husband.

I guess the same could be said about Obama except that his pick is probably a "no gamble" probably the safest choice he could make.

Brilliant or bad, right or wrong; i wouldn't know.

Delaware might be a small state, but it still has more people than Alaska. Plus, look at how many national and even multinational corporations are incorporated in Delaware. Representing Delaware in the US Senate for 35 years is not experience that should be overlooked. Biden is not a gamble.

And as far as Hillary being an amazing candidate, yes...she was amazing. Both she and Obama energized millions of new voters to register and in many cases contribute their time to political advocacy and grassroots campaigning. And both of them have staked their entire careers on helping Americans everyday, and progressively reforming the government so that it can best serve the people. They have reignited a spark in many Americans to expect more from our government, and work together to make good things happen. As proud I am to have Obama as our Democratic nominee, I am equally grateful that Hillary contributed her ideas and efforts to this election process. Obama would not be as strong without the primary process, and even though Hillary's campaign was not perfect (gas tax holiday, FL/MI, 3AM ad, etc.) I still admire and appreciate the bulk of what she stands for. Not just Obama and Clinton, but several of the Dems including Richardson, Biden, and probably even Dodd were strong and qualified candidates, and I'm proud of that. If only the Republican primary pool also had as many decent and qualified candidates to pick from. Although if I have to say something nice about a Republican, I'll grant that Fred Thompson was also an amazing candidate:P

Hillary was a great candidate. Not because she was a woman, or because she was another Clinton...but because she stood for so many of the causes that benefit Americans from all backgrounds, and clearly has what it takes to get the job done in office. The primaries were so close because we really did have two excellent candidates, and two excellent potential presidents. While the Penns, McAuliffes, and Slick Willies surrounding Hillary Clinton may have missteered her campaign now and then, as a candidate she was amazing and inspiring as someone who would work so hard for the common good of her country.

And for those who can appreciate a little un-PC humor, enjoy:

@Indie while i respect some of your beliefs your statements remind me of the true believer Reagan(a)uts or a zealot.

Using your word "amazing" it seems to me that Obama is an amazing motivator, while HillBilly has an amazing machine or an amazing drive to get what she wants.

You also btw seem to place the blame of Hillaryous's failed campaign on her backers or choice of friends ... Those types of decisions (and some others) show me exactly who she is. Well as my grandfather told me years ago show me your friends and i'll tell you who you are.

It depends what the meaning of amazing is. Keep in mind how disappointing politics had become between 1996 and 2007...I think even given her willingness to engage in negative campaign tactics, she was a much better candidate than we'd seen in a while. And yeah, that amazes me. Also, I still think that Hillary's platform was a good one and respect where she was coming from...just not the ends-justify-the-means approach that shone through the political gimmicks. But that wasn't her whole campaign.

Besides...amazement triggered by a politician is a relative thing. And also keep in mind that this comment thread has an element of debate. So I'm going for rhetoric, and not just data entry. If only my choice of adjectives is exaggerated, but the stats and facts I use to support my argument are accurate and intended to make a fair point, then I don't think that really makes me a zealot. Feel free to replace the word "amazing" with "compelling" or "still-better-than-any-republican-this-primary-season" if you prefer.

Also, I think you make a good point...I am trying to develop a more journalistic, neutral, and evenhanded way to make my political arguments. But I don't think you can seriously do that in a post that uses the eponym "Hillaryous" in a neutral voice, either:)

And to counter your final point, "Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are." (Brillat-Savarin). Who am I...my friends or my food?!? Or should I be eating more of my friends in search of reconciliation? :P

Amazing how many people are claiming that this fine woman has no experience for VP. She has been a Governor just as long as Obama has been a Senator, and has managed to accomplish a ton more than in that time frame. Obama only manages to vote "present" whenever he bothers to show up. This woman kicks a$$! McCain is going to win guys... Nobody with half a brain is going to vote for a guy that won't even come straight out and tell you what he stands for... He has no chance now...

are you f*cking kidding me? (re: the pick, not the comments)

this is a pathetic attempt to pander to hardcore right-wingnuts

also - experience is a totally legitimate question still;

harvard law v. idaho sportscaster?
conlaw prof at U Chicago v. any executive position in Alaska?

This ticket is a joke and I'm embarrassed for the Republicans.

I want my candidates elite. Take away the governorship and my resume is stronger for the position than Palin's.

The only thing more pathetic than sending up a wildly unqualified token candidate would be to have the Democrats bungle this up or turn back on their offensive in the slightest.

They will send Hillary - after the whooping she took in the primary, you can bet that she will be out for blood.

Miss Congeniality cannot have the key to the nukes should El Johannes kick the bucket. If the dems have any sense whatsoever, they'll wait until after the convention and send Hillary out with a copy of Palin's lifestory - political issue positions and voting history highlighted. They shouldn't even hire a PR firm - they should just record her on a handheld reading McCain and Palin's votes and stated positions. Call it indie-campaigning.

Couple things...

If McCain picked Lieberman, he would lose handily because of a conservative outcry vs Uncle Joe. Once again the "maverick" caved to the GOP orthodoxy.

The next Pres. will still spend a lot on defense to rebuild the military after Bush's disaster.

Since when is picking a legitimately conservative candidate pandering to conservative voters? lol

You know that the left wingers are worried when they start whining and slinging mud. Republicans on the other hand look at Biden and go "eh"...

As far as anyone on this board's resume matching this lady, the mere thought had my crying I was laughing so hard!

Obama is a farce. The more he opens his mouth, the more he shows his ignorance... The best thing he could possibly do is just shut up and let Biden do the talking!

She is a fucking joke. Tonya Harding with a "college" degree. I loved listening to her speak about a "Nukular EYE-ran."

What she is is an avatar of the modern Republican voter: proudly ignorant and morally sideways. Their lumpen credo remains: don't bother me with facts - the REAL problems of America are gay marriage, gun rights and ay-rabs.

Don't forget immigrants. This country's been going down hill since we started letting immigrants in.

I blame Leif Eriksson and his lutefisk-eating ilk. Go back to Norway, you smorgasbord-eating neutrality monkeys! And take your lousy Ikea furniture with you! You're taking jobs away from hardworking American particle-board furniture makers!

yeah, take back that norwegian ikea stuff....it's certainly a lower grade of quality than that swedish ikea stuff

We can keep the aquavit. And the meatballs. But they have to take back Ibsen.

And now we learn that she's a Pentecostal. I can't WAIT until the first time she starts speaking in tongues on the campaign trail!!!
