We got pretty excited about the potential cougar spotted on the University of Maryland campus in College Park last week, if only for the endless stream of terrible, double entendre-based jokes that it spawned. But it turns out the 'cougar' wasn't a cougar at all -- surveillance photos indicate the cat people saw was probably a Savannah cat.
Savannah cats like the one pictured at left are hybrids of domestic short hairs and larger African felines, known as Servals. They can weigh as much as 35 pounds, are larger than typical house cats, and have become increasingly popular as house pets. No one seems to know where this Savannah cat may have come from, however.
Unfortunately, this means the faux-cougar was also not merely a younger woman displaying signs of premature aging and aggressive sexual proclivities.

Maybe it was really a MILF.
Correction: A cougar must be 35+. DCist, Please refer to urban dictionary.
Aw, I'm gone for a week and I missed a round of cougar jokes? Stupit vacay.
I guess that clears things up.. without sexy results.
Airhead students. When I was a student I knew the difference between a "cougar" and a cat. Typical over-reactions by Howard Dean followers? FREDTERP
Wow. That's one big pussy.
NOTE: Most women do not consider that statement flattering.
pointe, M.E.
Howard Dean? What?
Awwww, cute cat.
OMG kitty! Squee!
Any healthy, able-bodied college student who felt threatened by that should really just never go outside.
whatever the hell it is, looks like it would be a savory treat with orzo and peppers...
I can has UMD stoodents?
Nom nom nom
What UMD student felt threatened by an oversize housecat?
Just throw it a catnip mouse, maybe scratch its belly. Ohhhh, the DANGER.
My cat has neat markings and he's a bastard. This cat may be the devil itself.
i can't believe that FREDTERP knows how to use HTML to spiffen-up his posts, but still thinks he needs to "sign" every one of his posts in ALL CAPS.
I always interpreted that as one of the voices inside his head yelling his name. Kinda like Norman Bates' "mother."
I think it's a stylistic choice on his part.
STEVEHOLT.
how does one confuse that with this
OMG look at teh kyoot kitteh!1!!
