From left to right, Shadow Sen. Michael Brown, Dan Rather, Shadow Sen. Paul Strauss, Hayden Panettiere, Shadow Rep. Mike Panetta, and Melissa Fitzgerald.
As promised, Dan Rather stopped by today's voting rights luncheon hosted by D.C.'s shadow delegation in downtown Denver. The veteran journalist shook hands and posed for pictures, and though he didn't make a speech to the crowd, he did answer a reporter's question about D.C. voting rights by explaining that he was very familiar with the issue, having lived in Georgetown for eight years.
"I love the District," Rather said.
The former CBS anchor capped off a series of remarks by Hollywood actors who had gathered there at the invitation of Shadow Senators Paul Strauss and Michael Brown, and Shadow Rep. Mike Panetta. First to speak was Hayden Panettiere of Heroes, who spoke clearly and very briefly about how she felt every American deserves to have representation in Congress. Character actor David Keith spoke mostly about his own cause, an online campaign to stop child predators at www.protect.org, mentioning D.C.'s issue by way of venturing that statehood for the District could only mean more support in Congress for issues like his. The West Wing actor turned out to be Melissa Fitzgerald, who played Carol, assistant to Press Secretary C.J. Cregg on the show. Fitzgerald, who has been active on human rights issues in Uganda, spoke incredulously about D.C.'s voting status, saying it was a human rights issue here in the United States that needed more attention.

Committee Approves Same-Sex Marriage Bill

singing, one of these things is not like the other ones
god bless our shadow delegation...they sure do work hard for no pay...
Character actor David Keith...
thanks, Sommer :)
Hayden Panettiere is making a great "what the hell am I doing here" face.
That Heroes chick sure seems to care about a lot of causes...
not that this cause isn't important. But doesn't she also shill for saving the whales or something?
The shadow senators seem to be standing rather close to Dan.
And what's up with the look on Michael Brown's face? He chose a bad time to test out his 'Robin Williams as Popeye' impersonation, methinks. Maybe that would explain why the men are laughing and Olive Oyl Miss Fitzgerald seems less than amused.
Dang. Strikethroughs appear in the preview below, but not when the comment is posted. Olive Oyl is supposed to be crossed out...
McCain, Obama Agree to Overlook Transportation (Autopia on Wired.com)
"For better or worse, the presidential campaign has kicked into high gear and both Barack Obama and John McCain are touting platforms covering everything from the economy to Iraq. We're disappointed to see neither candidate considers transportation a top-tier issue.
"Transportation isn't even listed under the "issues" tab each candidate has on his website (McCain here, Obama here). That's a big mistake because transportation lies at the heart of some of the biggest issues we face -- energy, the environment, public infrastructure and competitiveness in the global economy, to name a few.
"Both candidates need to realize this and make transportation a front-burner issue..."

Dan Rather? He's the only one of these people who more than 1-2% of the United States would recognize.
And just look at Imaginary Senator Strauss. You just know he wants you to think that he's bangin' that lady.
If you are going to get a "West Winger" for liberal cause, its either Martin Sheen, the guy who played Toby, or bust.
As for Hayden, its good to see that her PR person cares about DC voting rights.
shave the cheerleader; save the world.
I never should have clicked on the David Keith IMDB link. I can't get "Love lift us up where we belong" out of my head.
Richard Gere has Tibet,
David Keith has DC,
But what does Louis Gossett, Jr. have?
