The Weekly Feed: Cupcake Wars Edition

Dish of the Week: Cupcakes
Where: Hello Cupcake

Memories of childhood birthday parties bring bad food flashbacks. The bowling alley pizza, the big cans of Hi-C punch (make mine Ecto Cooler). But most notable was the cupcakes. Dry nasty little bundles of Betty Crocker's finest box slathered with dried crunchy frosting with multicolored sugar dots. While that certainly has a place in our memories, leave it to those slightly more intrepid to come up with something a little more adult and appropriate. From more interesting flavors to moister cake and creamy rich frosting, the childhood treat has recaptured a spot with burgers as the latest comfort food to make a comeback.

And now it's time for DC's latest sweet tooth onslaught. Dupont Circle's Hello Cupcake is slated to open it's doors this Monday, August 25, offering a rotating selection of 20+ flavors that range from the traditional vanilla cake with chocolate frosting to the more unique cinnamon-chocolate cake with chili-chocolate ganache frosting. Here's hoping this bakeshop avoids the supply issues that plagued a certain Georgetown cupcakery last February. Let the cupcake wars begin!

Small Bites

Bobby's Bistro(?)
Todd Kliman drops the news that Robert Wiedmaier will be opening a new restaurant in Old Town.

... "All our friends ask us: Is Polly pregnant?" Robert Wiedmaier says, alluding to the new restaurant he's set to open in Old Town Alexandria in February of next year.
His two boys, Marcel and Beck, provided the names for his first two restaurants. But for this, his third venture, the chef will go outside the family. (Well, he hopes -- the name is already embroiled in a "legal battle with a trademark"; Wiedmaier is counting on having the negotiations wrapped up later this week)."

Drinking from the Potomac?
Local organic grocery stores MOM's (My Organic Market) is no longer selling imported bottled waters, and will only have those that are sourced and bottled domestically. It's a laudable move as we see more places dedicated to reducing their food miles and helping with the EPA-estimated 36 states that will be dealing with water shortages by 2013.

One wine move
Dave McIntyre will be moving his wine coverage from the Washingtonian to the Washington Post. One can't help but wonder if this is in the face of the criticisms of current columnists Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg, whose column recently raised eyebrows, as well as their predilection for writing about overly mass market wines.
