Weekly Music Agenda
Len Bias |
TUESDAY
>> The Black Cat brings local favorites Len Bias and math rock royalty from Don Caballero and AtomBombPocketKnife, under the name The Poison Arrows, to the backstage. $8, 9 p.m.
>> Rolling Stone said about Summerbirds in the Cellar, "The layer-upon-layer-upon-layer rock of Summerbirds in the Cellar's ethereal vocals, blasting guitar, marching drums, and serene synth lines is enough to make me scream, cry, and bellow into the night, thanking God, Jah, Allah, and Yahweh for the opportunity to bear witness." Damn, alright, we're sold. They're at The Red & The Black, $8.
>> Argentine singer-songwriter Federico Aubele brings his blend of dub, hip hop, bolero, tango and whatever else he decides to pepper in from around the world to the 9:30 Club this evening. He'll be joined by Dawn Landes and Natalia Clavier. $15, 7 p.m.
>> Man there sure is a lot of great music in town tonight. The Charm Offensive, featuring a host of former Dischord band luminaries and playing some smart, basic rock, are at Iota. $10, 8:30 p.m.
WEDNESDAY
>> Rose has a big, emotive, sumptuous voice and a captivating stage presence. See the lovely alt country chanteuse at the Velvet Lounge with Stella Schindler and Blueheels. $8, 9:30 p.m.
Meredith Bragg |
THURSDAY
>> We love Meredith Bragg. He's featured this week at Dahlak's Open Mic night. The U Street restaurant has started featuring live music and a series of regular events that are definitely worth checking out. UPDATE: This show has been canceled.
FRIDAY
>> A few years ago, it seemed like Dr. Dog opened for every band I saw at the Black Cat or 9:30 Club. Through tireless touring, a ton of recording and the cultivation of some seriously great music (we recommend giving their cover of Architecture in Helsinki's "Heart It Races" several listens), they've earned a name of their own. See their psychedelic-flavored indie rock in a headlining spot at Iota this weekend. $15, 9 p.m.
SATURDAY
>> The Walkmen are my favorite band. Well, they're always battling for first with Spoon, but at any rate it's safe to say that I love them. And these guys are known for their live prowess, which will only be helped by the fact that their new album, You & Me, is lovely and wonderful. I could continue listing reasons why you should go to the early show at the 9:30 Club, but for the sake of space, I'll just say, $15, 6:30 p.m.
>> Three Stars alums The Dance Party, Gist (celebrating their CD release) and US Royalty are blowing up the main stage at the Black Cat. $10, 9 p.m.
SUNDAY
>> Nothing like a little Sunday night metal. Forever In Terror and Fallen Martyr put your week to bed at the Velvet Lounge. $10, 9:30 p.m.
>> There are few things more fun than Galaxy Hut karaoke. And it's free! 8 p.m.

This Wednesday's show at the Velvet Lounge is Stella Schindler, not Schneider. She's one of the most talented musicians I've heard in DC in a good long while.

Does It Offend You, Yeah? at DC9 on Friday. Tickets are still available, but methinks that might not be the case in the coming days.

Len Bias??? I hope their music is better than their taste in band names.

Also, Wednesday has My Morning Jacket downtown at Constituion Hall. I have 2 extra tickets in the Orchestra for the show if somebody wants them (I've managed to upgrade myself slightly). I'm selling them at the $35 face value, and eating the tickemaster convenience charge if somebody wants to save me the minor hassle of posting them on craigslist.

There are few things more fun than Galaxy Hut karaoke.
Oh, I can think of a few things. Root canal. Butt rot. Waking up to find dental work where your genitals used to be. The buffet line at Junkpunchers on Surf-and-Turf night, where the servers huck 12-lb Maine lobsters and whole prime ribs at your meat-and-two-veg.
Now, karaoke night at Recessions? Totally different.
Big shriek for Rose, though. Kinda reminds me of a countrified Esmirelda minus the toilet. And I mean that in a good way.
