Photo of the Day: September 5, 2008

2008_0905_hippo.jpg

Flickr user mosley.brian brings us this bitter-sweet reminder that Happy the Hippo will soon be leaving us. No word yet on his official departure date or where the big guy will end up. So, make the most of the time we still have with Happy and stop by the Zoo to bid farewell, because before you know it he'll be gone, and we'll only have our memories to keep us warm. EXIF.

way to depress the hell out of me, dcist. i'm going to lunch.

No, no, no, I still can't believe this will actually happen.

William Shatner will arrive from the 24th century in a commandeered Klingon Bird of Prey just as Happy is about to be shot by evil Japanese poachers, and transport him to the future, where he will communicate with the hippo-speaking space probe that threatens to destroy the National Zoo when it discovers that it has no hippos. Or giraffes.

It's true. I saw it on tv. End of discussion.

something tells me that hippo is anything but happy.

Maybe he's going to a better place where he'll be fed all the marbles he could possibly want. Sad, poor, hungry, hungry hippo...

I'm Sad about Happy ....

Fuck the elephants!

Can they seriously not keep one hippo? He's been here his whole life, I think Happy has deserved the right to stay.

Butterface.
