This Week In Hip-Hop

Wednesday:
>> Ever since she burst onto the scene with Groove Theory, Amel Larrieux has maintained her status as a top flight vocalist, dabbling in R&B and jazz. She'll be taking up residence at the Birchmere for two successive nights. $35, 7:30 p.m., also Thursday.

Thursday:
>> Probably best known for his "Wonder-full" parties, DJ Spinna is a sought-after producer of both house and hip-hop music. He'll be making two appearances today, the first one being at DJ Hut at 5 p.m. and the other taking place at the Eighteenth Street Lounge around 9 p.m. He's in town to support Grand Pianoramax's latest release, The Hook (Remixes). $TBA.

Friday:
>> The Commodores and Evelyn "Champagne" King were major players in the funk and dance scenes of the 1970s and early 1980s, respectively. Both will be performing at the Ronald Reagan Building's Woodrow Wilson Plaza. Free, 7 p.m.

>> If you're willing to trek up I-95 to Baltimore, you'll be privy to what promises to be a great night of dance music featuring Fertile Ground, Karizma (pictured), and Jay Rags.The venue will be the Sankofa Dance Theater. $20 in advance/$25 at the door, 10 p.m.

Saturday:
>> Three Stars alum Zo! is turning the big 3-0 with a jam session at Liv. Scheduled to appear are his band, The ELs, and some yet to be named special guests (one of whom might be this guy). $10, 8 p.m.

Sunday:
>> The One Love Festival at the Crossroads in Bladensburg has several reggae heavy hitters performing, including Maxi Priest and Buju Banton. $40, 2 p.m.

If you see a guy at The Commodores show in a gorilla mask and no pants rocking out to "Brick House" that's NOT me. It's my Evil Twin Brother Chimpanzeerotica. Whatever you do, don't give him power of attourney and for god's sake don't pull his finger. He's wearing a diaper for a reason.

 

You had me at free. Even if this photo is rocking a creepy "candyman" vibe.
