Gallaudet University Dorms Evacuated
The AP reported that D.C. police are investigating a suspicious substance found near Gallaudet University, and that the Ballard North Hall dorm on campus has been evacuated as a result. The Post's Paul Duggan says both Ballard North and Ballard West have been evacuated, and the substance in question, six boxes of plant fertilizer and pesticide, plus a light bulb, was discovered in the duct work above an unoccupied room in the Ballard North building. Some reports describe the chemicals as "bomb-making materials", but Assistant D.C. Police Chief Patrick Burke told the Post there may be a less sinister reason the fertilizer was hidden there — police think it's possible that someone at the school was secretly growing marijuana.

Those kids at Galludet sure know how to party.

Fertilizer, pesticides and a light bulb. Hmmmmmmmmm. Maybe they were trying to grow some ideas?
I guess it depends on the light bulb to grow some pot (I have seen my share of "Weeds" and have had a few friends that knew a lot about growing the wacky tabacky").

Maybe it's medical marijuana. They'll get deafer without it.

Wow, what a typical DC over-response to a non-issue. Surprised they didn't shut down the NY Ave. Metro stop just to be safe, and perhaps close down the entire northeast quadrant to traffic.
Hell, I'm surprised they let anyone actually *live* here.

Living a few blocks south of the school, I'm perplexed as to why you'd grow your own. Seems like a lot of work to me. Heck, those whipper snappers on the corner of 10th & K would be only too happy to sell you some on the cheap.

If you grow, you can develop some really amazing stuff. You can't get these primo strains from a corner dealer. Besides, cheap doesn't mean good.

Jesus....while this is nothing, how many more "alerts" or "updates" are we going to get today?!

Uh, the day before 9/11 ... I think the Capital of the free world has every right to be extra cautious.

They were probably just interested in attracting some RF turtles.
If they really were growing, then I mourn the loss. :(

Yes, they never heard the turtles sneaking up on them...
You never expect the drug turtle to bust ya.

fuckregistering: quick, run! there is an argon molecule nearby plotting something sinister.
it's over-reacting, as per the usual 'round these parts. doesn't matter what day it is.

"it's over-reacting, as per the usual 'round these parts. doesn't matter what day it is."
Careful, IMGoph, or you'll see what overreacting *really* is. You think shutting down McPherson Square for two hours because of a window washer's bucket, or closing Haines Point for an unattended backpack (gasp!) were overreactions?
You just wait until I manage to shut down the entire central business district when I leave my half-eaten bag of potato chips on the steps of the Portrait Gallery. Chaos will ensue.

IMGoph, I don't think anyone who is a Simpsons fan will be offended.

wait - if the kids are all deaf, how the hell do they know the cops are coming? talk about risky business...

you're absolutely right, mr. krinkle (apology to primus fans out there). and anyone who isn't a simpsons fan should get their head checked.
