Flickr user soleil1016 seeks to remind us all that we're only 13 years away from another loud, obnoxious invasion that will hang on your clothes, get in your hair, and make for tasty eats (according to some). Alarm aside, the crisp shot of the colors of the wings and the skin pattern on the head almost make
me wish that I hadn't thrown my back into wall upon discovering a newly-resident cicada on it.

It's weird to see them with wings. I only see their discarded shells.

really is it every 13 years? because i always hear that....but then i see them and hear them EVERY year...

It's actually every 17 years in D.C. (lower down south, it's every 13), and the last time they were here was 2004.

I remember when they swarmed College Park making that pulsing hum. I kept looking around for the phaser set to "Overload."

The other day I saw a cicada fighting a bumblebee on the sidewalk, and it was the most awesome thing ever.
I'm glad I could share that all with you.

That's just a regular ol' cicada, different from a periodic cicada, which comes every 17 years.

I was terrified of the cicada invasion in 2004. Driving home from work on the GW Parkway, I had visions of one flying into my open window, sending me into a panic and ultimately plummeting down the side of the hill into the Potomac.
Is this normal?

Green = annual cicada
Red = periodic/biblical plague cicada
Don't keep us in suspense, Bethesdaist - who won??
[ report this ]
I wager twelve-hundred quatloos on the newcomer cicada!

I've seen some ugly brown ones around too, I guess those must be annuals as well?

These things freak me the eff out.

I don't think there was a winner. The bee had his stinger buried in the cicada, and the cicada was trying to gnaw the bee's head off, and they both were making a terrific noise and rolling around like mad. It was what a LNS Tuesday Night Takedown looks like in my mind.

Man, forget dog and cock fighting. I want some big f***ing insect fights.

There is a large wasp called the Giant Cicada Killer that preys on cicadas. The wasp stings the cicada, not to kill it, but paralyze it. The wasp then flies off with the cicada to its underground burrow. The wasp then lays its eggs and the hatched larvae feed on the paralyzed cicada.

Sorry IMGoph, I wish I had thought of using my cell phone to capture it - it was definitely a "Trials of Life" episode come to life. Or death.
It happened outside of Calvert Woodley, where I was picking up booze and cheese. I had no idea that Van Ness could be such a violent area.
