"The area also will be spruced up with ornamental trees, public art, lighting and a large, fountain-filled plaza"
I like the Columbia Heights improvements. I was hoping they'd add some trees, but do 'ornamental' trees actually grow?
The added bikes lanes will be much appreciated too!

Ornamental simply means that they don't produce edible fruit. The flowering cherrys on the tidal basin are "ornamental trees" for example.

ornamental, in the district, usually means something pretty small, like redbuds, dogwoods, or cherries. i'd put my money on the latter.

One big benefit of ornamentals at this stage in streetscape design is that they are relatively small but have high visual impact. Their size is a bonus for maintenance because their roots don't usually cause sidewalk and curb buckling which end up costing DOTs lots of money over time.
Other things can be ornamental too. Like Sarah Palin.

That's a shame about the National Music Center, although I wonder how many people even knew that such a thing existed? I still think that a National Music Museum could do very well. America has such a rich and diverse music history, and a lot of us don't know much about it.

Great framing on the photo...

Many thanks to DCist from Bread for the City: several of your readers offered to donate a vacuum cleaner to our client. It seems like a small thing, but it's really important for her.
Yay neighbors!

Thank you DCist for posting the Bread for the City link. Please do post more similar links in the future! There are a lot of generous people out there who are ready to give if given the opportunity. Thanks!
