Weekly Music Agenda
TUESDAY
>> They've put out consistently good albums for the better part of two decades, but Built to Spill's 1997 album, Perfect From Now On, is arguably their best. They're playing the album start to finish (the hot trend amongst long-standing bands these days), and it'll be worthwhile for those who like their loose guitar jams and lo-fi indie sound (even for those who kinda wish they'd picked Keep It Like A Secret instead). They're playing with the influential band of brothers The Meat Puppets (we didn't know they were still touring, either) and The Drones at the 9:30 Club. $25
>> It could be blues, it could be noise, it could be rock 'n' roll, but it's definitely all from the mind of one man. Icelandic artist Mugison now has a backing band to add more power to his quirk. Bellman Barker (***) -- no strangers to quirkiness themselves -- join him at DC9. 9pm, $10.
>> Old Time Relijun's Arrington de Dionyso is one of the few people who can rival Gogol Bordello's Eugene Hütz for coolest mustache in rock 'n' roll. Although he'll be in D.C. without his sax playing bandmates, his solo work is impressive enough that the Velvet Lounge is going 18+ for the night. Dan Higgs and Sean McArdle Band open. $8.
>> The Points, one of D.C.'s grittiest live bands, now have an album out to help you pass the time between their beer-spitting, ear-blistering concerts. Help them celebrate their CD release at the Black Cat Backstage. Opening bands Black Time and Static Static will be coming in from London and Los Angeles, respectively, to help. 9 p.m., $8.
WEDNESDAY
>> They sold out three consecutive Rock and Roll Hotel shows last November, but apparently neither that level of demand nor that level of intimacy was good enough for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. They're playing their first of two (non-consecutive) sold out shows at DC9 with Interpol-esque Wild Light. While we'd normally try to reassure ticketbuyers with slow fingers that they'd certainly find someone out there with an extra ticket, in this case, we simply wish you luck. 8:30 p.m.
>> Seattle's extremely catchy Throw Me The Statue sound like they've taken the bells and hooks of the Beach Boys and stuck Robert Pollard's vocals in front of it to create indie pop's newest sugar treat. They'll be with L.A. troubadours The Broken West at Rock and Roll Hotel. 8:30 p.m., $10.
>> Still haven't caught former Three Stars subjects The City Veins? They'll be at the Black Cat Backstage along with Wakey Wakey and Tiger and the Snow. 9 p.m., $8.
>> Like shows filled with power? Civilian Art Projects at 406 7th Street NW will be hosting two powerful bands, Brooklyn's These Are Powers and Seattle's Pwrful Power. The Apes (***) will also be playing. 8 p.m., $8.
THURSDAY
>> If you missed Brooklyn indie trio Oxford Collapse and their friends in Takka Takka when they came to the Black Cat Backstage back in late June (with Frightened Rabbit), you're getting a second chance at both bands in the exact same location. 9 p.m., $10
>> We know that Three Stars alums Bellflur can provide a sound that can inundate a room with atmosphere on their own, but tonight at Iota they’re getting some help from their friends. Members of Exit Clov, The Bonapartes, Cobra Collective and Sun Child have all been tapped for this big band edition. Pree, the current project from former Le Loup guitarist May Tabol and her rotating cast of musicians, will be opening. 9 p.m., $10.
FRIDAY
>>When we last saw Jacksonville, Florida's Black Kids, they were sharing the stage with fellow booty-shakers Cut Copy and impressing earlycomers to the Black Cat. They're back on the mainstage, headlining this time with The Virgins and Magic Wands. Just remember, they're not going to teach your boyfriend how to dance with you, so he's going to have to figure out how to gyrate to their highly infectious beats on his own. 9 p.m., $15
>> Meanwhile, Cut Copy themselves have tried their hand at selling out an even larger venue and succeeded with flying (ghost) colours. Craigslist options are still available for their 9:30 Club show with The Presets and Heartbreak.
>> Velvet Lounge will be hosting Wall of Soundfest DC, a multi-city celebration of experimental, noisy rock 'n' roll. D.C. will be represented by True Womanhood (who love to create percussive instruments out of just about anything) and Dark Sea Dream, with Seattle's Joy Wants Eternity and The Electric Lions from Detroit rounding out the bill. Do not be that poor soul without ear plugs. 9 p.m., $10.
SATURDAY
>> Oktoberfest has arrived. Arguably the area's most beer-conscious restaurant, focused on food pairings and stocking a phenomenal selection, Rustico is hosting an Oktoberfest block party this weekend. A whole bunch of restaurants and drink purveyors are helping you imbibe and ingest all afternoon, and so are a hand full of local bands. Two of our favorites, The Hall Monitors and Bad Panda, are amongst that group. The party starts at noon on Saturday in the lot behind Rustico, and goes till around 5 p.m.
>> His jangly pop riffs and dry delivery are often imitated, but there is only one Robert Pollard. His current band, the Boston Spaceships, will be accompanied by Philadelphia's nasally power pop trio The High Strung and Laundry Room Squelchers at the Black Cat Mainstage. 8 p.m., $15
>> Chicago trio The Interiors share a record label with D.C.’s Carol Bui, as well as her commitment to take-no-prisoners guitar riffs and socially conscious lyrics. They’ll be joined at The Red and the Black by reliable locals Fever, Tokyo & Puma Libre. 9:30 p.m., $8.
>> Gritty punk-flavored garage rock is not dead in the District, and The Black and White Jacksons and Len Bias aren't afraid to prove it. Catch them with Solar Powered Sun Destroyer and Richmond's Calpurnia at the Velvet Lounge. 10 p.m. $8.
SUNDAY
>> Halloween's come early this year, apparently. My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult is bringing their trashy, loud B horror movie aesthetic to the DC9 stage. D.C.'s own gothic 23Rainydays opens. 9 p.m., $15 in advance/$17 day of show.
>> MN8 Productions celebrates seven years of providing soul, funk, reggae, afrobeat and R&B concerts at the Black Cat with former Tony! Toni! Tone! singer and Joss Stone producer, Raphael Saadiq. The seasoned soul singer will be touring off of his recent release, The Way I See It. 8 p.m., $28 in advance/$30 day of show.

I don't suppose anyone has any idea how to get the presale password for the David Byrne show at the Warner on 11/9? Tix went on presale this morning, and the sumbeotch scalpers are already selling at grossly marked-up prices...meanwhile, I'm frozen out. D'oh.
