Word is that the individual stormed out of a room with some sort of spiked glove on. Strange, but true. She was in the building at the request of the property manager to look for squatters when she was attacked. He's in critical at Howard and the officer has been released from the hospital.

jaime:

You're correct, a difference in terminology. Affordable housing usually means housing at a price adjusted for those making under the median household income, which could be considered middle-class. Low-income housing is different.

I just think it paints a negative image in people's minds when you use those terms interchangeably. They are completely different things.

I'm glad you are a supporter of mixed-income communities. We need more people like you.

according to alex padro, anc-2c01 commissioner and shaw main streets director:
Tenants have up to 120 days to leave the property after the [Metropolitan] PUD is approved, if it is approved [hearing scheduled for October 30 at 6:30 p.m.]. Metropolitan has advised me that they will be ready to proceed with demolition as soon as possible after the last tenant is off the property. They will begin abating rats before then in an effort to minimize rat displacement from the demolition.

renewshaw.com was at the sms forum last night, too:
Addison Square (which is to replace Kelsey Gardens in the 1500 block of 7th), expects to break ground in the summer of next year and to be complete by fall 2011.

a safer neighborhood will begin when they start tearing crap like KG down. The majority of apartments are filled with squatters and dealers since the "original" tenants moved out.

Then again, there are plenty of issues just as bad/worse in the high rises south of this location on 7th. Dealers, rollers, and the thugs who love them.

jyoung - nope, not confused, though our terminolgy may differ. i used "affordable housing" = "low income housing", neither of which = "market rate housing."

of course they need a place to live - that's why i suggest everyone reading up on root shock. and trust me, i'm mixed-income housing's #1 fan.

metropolitan made it clear last night that the tenants at kelsey have first right of refusal on the affordable/low income/replacement apts. that will be in the new development. sounds great on paper, but doesn't often work in the real world, 'specially when folks would be waiting for 2 years or so to move back.

jaime:

I think you may have "affordable housing" confused with "public housing".

In addition that the development will include 200 market-rate units plus 15,000 sf of retail, this project is the much needed development that Shaw needs.

The information says that 54 units are for low income residents. Low income residents need a place to live too. A successful, safe neighborhood is about a balance of income levels as opposed to just ghettoes of rich and poor.

Don't these marches also want justice? Which often means a justifaction to sue the police.

I think badtzmaru was referring to the marches for peace or non-violence that are staged after a shooting like this. These marches do provide the community with a way to memorialize someone murdered, but they never get to the root causes. Will a march tell some 14 year old thug to get rid of the guns and crack trade?

badtzmaru: huh? what the hell do parents (courageous or not) have to do with an adult squatter in a vacant, boarded up apartment?

Can we get this lady a reality series? One where various squatters, vagrants, and ne'er-do-wells hit her in the knee, and then she shoots them?

Tonight on Fox: Paris Hilton and Tonya Harding in "The Simple Life: Ghetto Eviction Edition."

just saw metropolitan's pre-PUD presentation of the development that's replacing kelsey gardens last night.

metropolitan is proposing 56 (what they said last night vs. the 54 mentioned on their site) affordable rate apts. - in essence replacing what was/is at kelsey gardens along with some relocation assistance. about 10 folks are still (legally, i believe) living on site; sounds like the attacker may have been a squatter.

though i'm in no way defending the guy who attacked the police officer, i highly recommend folks wrap their heads around "root shock."

As a Shaw resident, I agree with 14th & You. I avoid walking by those aparments between 6th & 7th after dark. Areas to the north, closer to the Metro seem safer. I find anyplace where there is wearhoused poverty (like those apartments) the likelihood of running into bad events is higher, so I choose to stick to streets that are well lit and are mostly single family dwellings. OTOH, I could have been spoiled by living near all of the hipsters that frequent Big Bear Cafe--who am I kidding, skinny jeans and a strong sense of irony won't save me.

It's interesting, Shaw in general is viewed as being rather crime-ridden, but in reality it's a handful of intersections/blocks where a majority of the crime occurs. That area around 6th/7th streets and Q St. would be one of those areas.

When the officer entered one apartment, a man attacked her, injuring her knee. The officer then shot the man in the face and abdomen.

He was expecting an invite to a box social? Who the f**k attacks police officers?
