Obama Rejects Debate Delay

2008_0924_obama.jpgHere's his statement (via):

“This is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who in approximately 40 days will be responsible for dealing with this mess,” Obama told reporters in Clearwater, Fla.

...

“In my mind, it’s more important than ever that we present ourselves to the American people and describe where we want to take the country and where we want to take the economy,” he said.

...

As for the debate, he said, “It’s going to be part of the president’s job to be able to deal with more than one thing at once.”

What do you think of his response?

So far, Obama talks the talk.

Since the nomination, I haven't heard McCain say anything particularly presidential or anything that makes him sound like a leader.

The Republicans are making theirs the "personality ticket" and the Dems seem to be the "Business ticket."

My mind was made up months ago, but I wonder how the average stupid swing voter will look at this.

Ooooh, I think I just got the warm tinglies a little.

Maybe I ruled out that career in white slavery a little too quickly.

huh. I had done the [strike][/strike] tag (with

Bazziiiiingg! Watch me fix the economy and slam dunk all up in your face!

Game...blouses.

neither one of you are President yet, so how about the both of you do your "jobs" as Senators and get to the bottom of this incredible f-up. Do you really think America needs to hear more lip service from two more overpaid d-bags that clearly have no clue on how to run the economy?

"What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now!"
-Letterman

I think obama's estimate is off by about 75 days... wait for your inauguration, dude!

pitch perfect.

Always a response for everything.

This reminds me of the misconception that because Congress passed a resolution honoring tweety-bird that all 535 congresspeople were wasting valuable taxpayer time debating it when in reality everything was probably handled by some aide and a single aye vote. Not to say the budget bailout is a tweety-bird resolution, but I think Frank, Dodd, Bachus and Shelby are the main players on this and none of them are scheduled to debate this week.

Badass by Obama. Call that jackass out. My Republican coworker even said he was "flummoxed" by McCain's move. This is basically a last minute gamble for McCain to appear to be taking the crisis by the reins and say "I'm committed to fixing the economy. My vast understanding of brokerage houses, hedge funds and international financial system is needed to solve the crisis that 533 others can't! I can't even spare 90 minutes of my mind-grapes on Friday at 9pm to debate!"

Ma---lar---key.

Well, if Obama insists that the President (or he who is worthy of the Presidency) should be able to multi-task, I have a question for him:

What will you be doing to address the crisis on the day of the debate? Will you actually be working on a solution? Or will you, in fact, be focused solely on the debate?

I don't see how they're mutually exclusive. Just so we're clear, the President usually isn't the guy who comes up with the plan for issues as complex as a wide-ranging financial bailout--this is what advisors do. The President is the one who decides if it's a good idea or not and then sells the idea to the American public who then can tell their Congressmembers to vote on it one way or another.

So...by Obama presenting his thoughts to the public and comparing them with McCain's during the debate, I think that would help everyone get their heads around the problem and the proposed solutions. What did George W. do tonight? He went on TV to describe the problem and what he thinks should be done.

Nice comeback to a cheap political stunt by McCain.

Hey John -did you pretend to hear your mommy calling you home for dinner so you wouldn't have to fight the guy who is most definitely going to kick the rhetorical shit out of you? Why don't you send that congential liar, Sarah Palin, to debate Obama in your place?

Do we need any more evidence that McCain is desperate and running scared? What a bunch of retards!

wait a minute - who actually LIKES mccain anyway? i have yet to meet anyone in person who thinks that sexy mcpalin ticket is better than oh-bamma

I'm with the President. If these "toxic mortgages" aren't weapons of mass destruction, I don't know what is. We have CIA satellite photos that prove this beyond a shadow of a doubt. Do you want to wait until the "smoking gun" is a crater in the middle of Wall Street?

To fix this economy, our only option is to invade Iran. Now.

"i have yet to meet anyone in person who thinks that sexy mcpalin ticket is better than oh-bamma"

You don't get out much do you? It's a very different world when you get outside the Beltway. ~44% of the US vote are leaning towards that ticket.

These candidates are supposedly trying to win our votes and support by convincing us that they are leaders, agents of change, and are equipped and ready to hold the office of President. On a resume, you would list current/previous employment, which for both of these guys is the US Senate. Campaigning does not give you leave from your responsibilities. We don't need to hear you two argue and bullsh*t and make empty promises that you won't carry out in office. Both of you, get your asses back to DC and do your jobs. Show us you're willing and able to take action and DO something, instead of just talking.

What Monkey said.

3jacks2nines: what can either of them do when they're not on the banking or finance committees? get in the way, that's what. when something comes to the floor that the entire senate can debate and vote on, sure, but until then, this is just ego stroking.

We don't need to hear you two argue and bullsh*t and make empty promises that you won't carry out in office. Both of you, get your asses back to DC and do your jobs.

If America wanted change, they wouldn't keep re-electing the same gridlock perpetuating cockheads and career politicians peddling the same brand of patronizing claptrap. Americans HATE change. Change is scary. Change costs money. Change moves people with different colored skin into your neighborhood, frightens the elderly, and says rude things about your mother. So long as the Senate is arguing with the House, and they're both arguing with the White House, nobody gets anthing accomplished, and that's how we likes it. Besides, the time for change isn't when the economy's in the crapper, it's when the economy's going gangbusters and everyone's riding the self-fellating gravy train of free mortgages and houses-as-ATM-machines.

Vote Monkeyrotica: Because the Status Quo is Your Best Entertainment Value.

What kind of contribution would McCain make to the whole process? He isn't on any of the committees and has openly said that he doesn't know anything about economics. They should just leave it to the people who actually know a few things about it, instead of them speaking out after having been prepped by their advisors on what to say.

With the way modern technology is, they could be there remotely and still have their say and still be able to debate.

Instead what we will have is the two candidates in a meaningless debate - giving us their same ol'.

I have no problem with rescheduling the date if it means the questions will be adjusted and updated based on the actions taken this weekend and both of them can review the actions, make their adjustments and can answer those questions with more accuracy - after the fact. I think that is reasonable ..

See, the thing is, Mccain is RESPONSIBLE for the banking deregulation fiasco. Ergo, he's the ONLY one who knows how to fix it.

And if you can't stomach that, then vote John McClane and show that rat bastard Alan Rickman who's boss.

Seriously, you're all missing the point. Every one of you. Lot's of fancy rhetoric here but no real issues or ideas beyond a trivial understanding of the American people's needs. We need Knight Rider. And This whole toxic mortgage presidential amber alert fucked that up.

Seriously, the answer was on TV, a talking car, it was right there! He was probably going to say something about the economy! And how to fix it! And you had to go and talk over it. Maybe if you'd shut up, W, we would have heard the answer. Now we have to wait until next week. Great.

DCist is the best site for finding out about all of DC's happenings. There's already a site for political musings, Wonkette, along with tons of other sites devoted to covering politics and doing a much better job of it than you guys. So, could we PLEASE keep this a haven from political banter and return to the regular stuff, lest I have to stop reading this page as well and you leave me nothing to look forward to during the day?

prufrockn - I really wish Councilgungan JarJar would hurry up and vote Fenty emergency powers, because it's people like you that will be sent to the spice mines of Kessel. For a safe and secure society.

Either that, or you'll be banished to the Forbidden Zone with General Zog and you'll be stuck listening to Terence Stamp emote for all eternity.

I think they should send in their VP nominees to do to the debates for them.

check and mate.

obama/biden 08!

prufrockn - Political threads aren't very common here, and when they are posted, they aren't exactly disguised. If you don't want to talk politics here, don't click.

how can you not click though, politburo? that magical, candy-like link just screams click me, click me now!

He hasn't really suspended his campaign. ala Bush, using words but actions belie.

But is anyone else old enough to flash back to Jimmy Carter and his refusal to leave the White House during the Iranian hostage crisis? That worked out real well...

Both candidates should refuse to leave the men's room until either the toxic mortgages are re-absorbed into the economy, OR the Houston Astros win the World Series.

Then we nail two-by-fours across the door.

IMGoph, you've got two people running for the highest office in the land. Which type of person would you prefer generally, ignoring the Congressional process for the moment. The kind of person that sits back and says, eh, I'm not the expert, it's someone else's problem, it's not my role to help in this crisis... or the kind of person that wants to take action, even if it might not be while sitting in the committee chamber, but doing something, anything, to help the situation. Think of it another way. If there's a bus crash and there are several people injured on board, do you sit there and do nothing because you're not a trained paramedic or rescue worker, or do you jump in and take action, even though you're not especially qualified or have any background in life saving, and try to help some people out? In my opinion, many people have just lost all sense of what government is supposed to be, and take for granted that someone running for election has forfeited their day job in order to pursue it. I still think Obama is going to look worse on this one to middle america. Regardless of the formal political process to respond to this crisis, a debate is not as important as the economy right now. Period. Reshedule the darn thing and then Obama can debate McCain on the merits of the postponement, and make himself look even more foolish.

If there's a bus crash and there are several people injured on board, do you sit there and do nothing because you're not a trained paramedic or rescue worker, or do you jump in and take action, even though you're not especially qualified or have any background in life saving, and try to help some people out?

You're forgetting the third option: taking hostages until the CIA admits that they've been letting aliens steal your luggage.

This is what's known as "the Ron Paul strategem."

It's not a bus crash, for one. That's right out of the Shitty Analogy Playbook: Use an analogy that contains a life-threatening situation to describe a situation that does not contain a life-threatening situation.

But to continue on your shitty analogy.. let's say there are 2 EMTs working on each bus crash victim. Would you push them aside and start doing CPR?

If there's a bus crash and there are several people injured on board, do you sit there and do nothing because you're not a trained paramedic or rescue worker, or do you jump in and take action, even though you're not especially qualified or have any background in life saving, and try to help some people out?

If I'm seriously injured in a bus crash I damn well hope some idiot who knows nothing about emergency medicine does not decide to "jump in and take action" by, say, dragging me out of the way (oops, he just broke my back and paralyzed me for life) or giving me an outdated form of mouth to mouth he "learned" from a TV show (ruptured lung, too bad!)

I took four economics classes in college and I am fairly sure that I know more about the subject than John McCain, whose wide-eyed ideological embrace of deregulation for deregulation's sake helped get us into this mess in the first place. That's scary in and of itself. Furthermore, I'm not running down to Paulson's office offering to "help out" with my clueless eagerness. Ask any EMT - too many "helpers" just get in the way.

*Helping* people in a bus crash may lead to their paralysis or brain damage if you don't know what you're doing.

It's always better to get in the way, until someone with a better idea puts you in your place.

As for Ron Paul, i think so far he has the best idea as yet .. don't bail-out anyone, let the pieces fall to crap, and start the economy over on a new platform.

Actually, if there's a bus crash and there are trained paramemdics and the trained paramedics say "please get out of the way," I would probably get out of the way.

Although I don't really get why they can't come to DC, sit in the Senate all day, and then take 90 minutes to do the debate while the rest of Congress takes a gin break. Problem solved.

don't bail-out anyone, let the pieces fall to crap, and start the economy over on a new platform.

A platform where bits of dung are used as currency and everyone leads a life devoted to chastity, abstinence, and a flavorless mush I call "rootmarm."

Knight riderrrr!!!!!!!!

"bits of dung are used as currency" and the primary building material for affordable housing too.

But to continue on your shitty analogy.. let's say there are 2 EMTs working on each bus crash victim. Would you push them aside and start doing CPR?
thanks for putting it so succinctly, reid.

honestly, krisa, just because someone is doing something doesn't mean it helps. action for the sake of action is just one step away from pointless. doesn't matter how it plays with middle america.

Good grief. An analogy that was only one quarter of my post and took me 15 seconds to write has been thoroughly ripped to shreds, congratulations. But what about the rest of what I said? This is why it's impossible to have a discussion on politics in this country. The point is that everyone in a society has a role to play and can do some good in a bad situation, even if the so-called experts are the ones on the hook for responding. Why is Congress any different? Tha guy's running for the damn presidency. No one outside the beltway is going to say "But he's not a part of the finance committee.. "

So let me get this straight.

John McCain--

-That same John McCain who was one of the Keating Five Scandal related to the Lincoln S&L crisis of the 1980s (although, I guess to his credit he was too much of a wuss to actually help out his old pal Chuck Keating by getting the Feds off his back, and just got a slap on the wrist);
-That same Chuck Keating who gave John McCain and his family huge political contributions and unpaid trips, etc.;
-that same S&L crisis which prompted Congress to bail out insolvent S&Ls when the scat hit the fan by creation of the biggest boondoggle in American history: the Resolution Trust Corporation;
-That same Resolution Trust Corporation which has been offered as the vehicle by which we will save our bacon now, long after Wall St. has gotten done putting trillions into buggywhips;

That same John McCain . . . needs to skip the debate in order to help guide our country in this latest, eerily similar financial crisis? Well, I guess he does have experience in such matters.

VOTE JOHN McCAIN . . . THE CANDIDATE WITH EXPERIENCE!!!

Krisa: My point is that I don't think there is any good that McCain or Obama could practically do by throwing themselves into the middle of the situation. We've been basically saying the same things since yesterday, so we'll just have to disagree.

Politbro i agree that neither would have contributed much to the bailout, but i still would rather them postpone the debate til after the weekend so that we can hear them debate the actual bailout plan rather then their usual economic rhetoric we already have heard.

for example; I'ld like to hear if either will alter their tax refund promise.

They shoulda just sent that Crazy Palin in that meeting to scare them all by speaking in tongues...

Anybody seen the YouTube footage of her "witch-hunting" pastor laying hands on her, praying God for money to flow into her gubernatorial campaign?

WACKO
