Weird Crime of the Day: Group Steals Bronze Bull Sculpture

2008_0925_bullhead.jpgThanks to the person who sent in this link to the DCist tipline. We're still trying to wrap our heads around this crime story announced by the Georgetown University Department of Public Safety, about a strange home invasion burglary in the 3400 Block of Prospect St. NW:

A homeowner reported to the Metropolitan Police Department at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2008 that a group of 12-15 white males and females broke into his home. Another resident of the home confronted the individuals and they left the premises. The homeowner discovered that a bronze bull's head sculpture worth $25,000 was missing. MPD reported this incident to DPS on Tuesday, September 23, 2008.

The Department of Public Safety is requesting that anyone who has information regarding this or any other incident(s), or who noticed any suspects before or after the incident(s), to contact them immediately at (202) 687-4343.

Twelve to 15 white, mixed-gendered thieves, traveling in a pack in Georgetown? This has to be a Georgetown University hazing ritual or something, right? Can anyone shed some light, or at least some fun theories, on this one for us?

They feel that by symbolically sacrificing a bull, their trust funds will magically reappear?

Isn't that Halcyon House? Currently it's owned by this sculptor, who pays the mortgage by renting it out to weddings, and such. The house is full of his sculptures, and they don't look at all like that bull's head. They're more abstract, and, frankly, kind of ugly.

But hey, the whole house can be yours for a mere $30 million!

throw the book at em! gotta show that we see no color when it comes to crime in this city!

(of course, it was some dumb prank. something tells me 12-15 white kids are about to get kicked out of the university.)

I feel it's unfortunate that dcist decided to reveal the suspects' race, as this reinforces the negative stereotypes that white people are both idiots and steal stupid crap.

Somebody told them to take the bull by the horns and, fearing a real bull, they decided to do the next best thing that came to mind.

It's a standard "gang initiation" tactic to break into a house and force the owner to give you head.

Clearly, these prospective members failed to read the FAQ.

Please, please let LNS be involved in this somehow.

Also, I'd love to know what this group said when they were "confronted" by the resident. "Oh, uh, we thought this was Frank's house. Sorry, dude."

And I ALSO want to know why they thought this was a good idea given the recent Heller ruling...

"throw the book at em! gotta show that we see no color when it comes to crime in this city!"

Or just treat them like all armed robbery cases in the city: ask them nicely to not do it again and let them right back out on the street.

I think the thieves are modern day Argonauts, stealing the golden fleece of our time, taking it back to their own kingdom to depose an evil ruler, crown a righteous and noble king, and bring peace and prosperity to the land. Many shall fall, many may die, some will graduate on time.

"This has to be a Georgetown University hazing ritual or something, right?"

Sounds like it. If we were in Ithaca, NY, and not DC, my primary suspect would be the Cornell Rugby Team. Scavenger Hunt, indeed.

"Please, please let LNS be involved in this somehow."

I share that wish.

Hmm, perhaps they were planning a fertility dance ritual of the Cult of the Apis bull? They broke into a house as a group... sounds like cult activity to me!

Screw LNS. I hope Heidi and Spencer are behind this.

That's it! Spencer Pratt is assembling some sort of minotaur for Heidi Montag to have sex with! Will nothing satisfy that lantern-jawed dingbat's unnatural urges?

There's hate crime, petty crime, monstrous crime, and now we finally see Douchebag crime.

With 15 white kids of mixed gender stealing a bulls head in DC, I say the rest of the night resembled a much more boring and less attractive version of eyes wide shut.

now, are the 15 of mixed gender, or is each on individually of mixed gender? because that would make this story a lot more interesting.

oh my god, monkey knows who heidi and spencer are.

I think everyone involved in this fiasco--from the fool who pays $25k for a bull's head, to the 15 gender-confused honkeys who stole it--should be punished by being forced to watch The Hills and memorize whole passages of dialog.

Were they wearing hats?

IMGoph: Of course the 15 individual people are each of mixed gender. Have you not heard of the hermaphrodite pledge house at Georgetown? They worship at the foot of Apis and make preppie she-male porn. It's been a big house ever since they kicked them all out of Catholic U for doing terrible things to the donkey statues from a few years back.

Inquiring minds want to know if their collars were popped or not--a true sign of a colostomy bag.

If you mess with the bull, you get the horns.

georgetown's blog is covering it

http://blog.georgetownvoice.com/2008/09/25/brazen-bull-bandits-target-halcyon-house/

They're calling them "the Bronze Bull Bandits?" WTF? I would have gone with "the Bungling Bull Buttinskis" or, barring that, "the Apple Dumpling Gang."
