Dog Attacks Resident, Cop in Petworth
Inspector Edward Delgado of the MPD's 3rd District Sub Station, a.k.a. the D.C. police officer voted most likely to return your email within an hour, sent out a message to the 3rd District email list today describing a dog attack in Petworth early this morning. At about 4:50 a.m., according to Delgado, an MPD officer who was responding to a call about a dog attack in the 700 block of Quebec Street NW was himself then attacked by the same dog. While the dog was attacking him, the officer reportedly tried to shoot the dog, but missed. The dog's owner eventually came outside to claim his pet, and Animal Control then took possession of the canine. The injured resident who was originally bitten was taken to an area hospital and is expected to undergo surgery. The officer was treated and released from the hospital.

Was the dog wearing lipstick?

CM Grahamstanders email on the MPD list wanted to know the circumstances around the person being bitten...hello, clearly the dog was outside unattended if the owner came out of their house to claim the dog...what more does the Grahamstander need to know?

HOW do you miss shooting a dog that's attacking you?
p.s. - i'm glad he missed, but this dog faces certain death by lethal injection.

Disposition of the animal now depends on answering the question: What's a Pet-worth?

Put it down, no delay, no appeal.

Forget lipstick, was the dog wearing a hat?

Isn't about time we start a civilized approach to dog attacks- simply put the owner down, sell off their possessions, and put the money towards setting up the dog in rehab. Perhaps train it be a police dog since it is already talented at dodging bullets.

well i can't say i'm surprised. everyone else seems to think animals are our friends, but I know all about the impending human/animal war. Man's best friend? More like Dog of War.

Better yet - take a multipronged approach:
1. Outlaw any breed of dog that any rapper or pro football player has ever owned. This includes Pit Bulls, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Cane Corsos, Presa Canarios and any other "cool" dog. Do this by means of broad, sweeping, poorly thought out laws that the city has to waste time defending against constiutional challenges. It's a problem that only pointless, overbroad legislation can address.
2. Put Jim Graham and Mary Cheh in a dark, damp basement for a week with no access to the media. Feed them on RapSnax and 40 dogs and then when they're vicious enough let them fight it out while Marc Fisher sits there tut-tut-tutting about how NO ONE should be allowed to own a media-hog council-critter.
3. Make sure the blame is squarely on the breed and not on the inhumane bastard, waste-of-life-fucknut who starved it, beat it with a rubber hose and tried to deny ownership when the poor thing got out and bit someone.
4. Make sure there are endless council hearings where ignorant councilmen rail on about something they know nothing about, namely responsible pet ownership.
5. Repeat ad nauseam.

I, for one, welcome our new nut-licking canine overlords.

Quebec Street is Park View. It's confusing because the Georgia Ave-Petworth Station is barely in Petworth itself.

You heartless bastard! I may be a Bears fan, but even I wouldn't deprive Brett Favre of his beloved five pound Yorkshire Terrier, "Jazzmin."
(Really. Not a joke. Brett Favre does, in fact, own an pwecious widdle Yorkie named "Jazzmin." I so rarely get to drop that tidbit into DCist comment threads, so I'm grateful it's roughly apposite here.)

Thanks for the chuckle, cminus. And helping me make my point that the DC City Council never met a piece of overbroad, sensationalist legislation that it didn't love.

Everyone's favorite Redskin Chris Cooley has a Yorkie as well....it must be all the rage with NFLers these days....

Why is the DCVote ad appearing between the headline of this piece and the text? I think there are some layout glitches at work here . . .

Fine. Now it's not happening any more . . . looks like the glitch was on my end!
