Other Polar Bears Spotted Around D.C.

Flickr user benmiller23 spotted this polar bear installation, which looks very similar to the one that a bomb squad tore apart after shutting down surrounding streets and a Metro station in Columbia Heights today, on the National Mall on Thursday, Sept. 11.

It's looking more and more like these bears are part of an elaborate campaign to raise awareness about the plight of polar bears amid global climate change. Another bear, spotted at what looks to be the Gallery Place Metro station, had signs which made the effort more explicit. Perhaps if today's Columbia Heights polar bear had also had signs, he wouldn't have been suspected of containing explosives.

Flickr user a nameless yeast also added the clearer capture below of today's bear, and below that, WJLA gave us permission to use an image of the bomb squad dealing with the bear menace.
