Regular D.C. area Morning Edition listeners will soon have a new local host at WAMU. Bill Redlin, who has hosted the program for WAMU since 1985, announced today on the air (through a scratchy voice that sounded like he has a cold) that he will move to middays, while regular substitute Matt McCleskey will take the reins of the morning slot.
According to a release from WAMU, Redlin will also assume a mentorship role for the station's local newsroom. The move generally seems to be related to Redlin's desire to have a more normal work schedule. On the air, Redlin said he had asked if he could be moved into another position, and that he was happy that this is what General Manager Caryn Mathes had come up with.
"I'll miss hearing him first thing each day, but I can certainly understand the appeal of a workday that doesn't start at 3 a.m.," Mathes said in a statement.
The WAMU Morning Edition host's job involves introducing the station's local news and weather at the bottom of every hour, from 5 a.m to 10 a.m., after NPR's national content.
"I'm looking forward to this change, especially because it will allow me to become a full-time listener to WAMU 88.5's Morning Edition," said Redlin.

First we had to get used to the change from Bawlb Edwards to Renee "too perky for morning" Montagne and Steve "can't restrain the fake laugh" Inskeep, and now this?
Bill, Bill, you leave us with MacKleskey... at least we have had a chance to get used to him...
As long as we don't end up with Johnetta hosting "Thistle and Shamrock" or Mary Cliff hosting anything else, we'll be fine...
Juanita!!!
He did sound pretty bad this morning, like he had something caught in his throat.
Now if only they could move Diane Rehm to the 3am shift. Her voice still sends me into siezures. Kinda awkward on the a.m. commute on the GW Parkway.
"Interesting....let's go to the phones."
congrats to bill on getting some better work hours there. i don't wish being awake at 3 a.m. on my worst enemy
I've always enjoyed listening to Bill in the morning, but it seems like over the last few months he's been having more and more days with a "froggy" voice. This morning it seemed he could barely get through a sentence without the distinct sound of phlegm build-up making it out over the airwaves. Obviously this isn't ideal for a radio personality, and I wonder if it has anything to do with him moving to later in the day. Lately, between him and Diane Rehm it's felt like I'm listening to a ham radio broadcast from the local old folks' home.
