No one is suggesting the Super Bowl is in our future. But with a 29-24 win against the New Orleans Saints yesterday at FedEx Field, we can safely remove ourselves from the ledge and take a deep breath. While I’m not actually sure what a “schneid” is, fans across the metropolitan area are happy the Redskins have gotten off of it.
After a painful first half, when the offense seemed to be allergic to the end zone, the Redskins rallied from behind and flashed some offensive muscle for the first time in this early season. The much-maligned Jason Campbell had a solid game, finishing 24 of 36 for 321 yards and a 104.1 passer rating, including the game winning 65 yard strike to Santana Moss. The aforementioned Moss finished with seven catches for 164 yards and Clinton Portis had another solid outing with 96 yards and two touchdowns. Last week’s invisible man, Chris Cooley came through with five big catches for 72 yards. Must have been that spaghetti.
When it comes to the defense, perhaps we were a little too hasty in our judgement of last week’s performance. Yesterday the defensive unit did a fantastic job stopping Reggie Bush and Drew Brees, applying pressure and forcing turnovers. Defensive end Jason Taylor had his first sack as Redskins and last-second addition and seventh round draft pick Chris Horton came away with three turnovers and quite possibly a new starting job at strong safety. Also yesterday, the New York Giants put 44 points up against the lowly Rams in St. Louis. So maybe giving up 16 points to the defending champions on their home turf in week one wasn’t too bad after all.
So OK, let’s not get too giddy. The first half was hard to tolerate and even the most delusional (and/or drunk) of the 92,000 at FedEx field were starting to wonder, “Is this offense ever going to produce?” The special teams play was sloppy. A muffed snap here, a fumbled punt there, and a terrible line drive punt that helped produce a Reggie Bush touchdown set the stage for an uneasy fourth quarter.
But out of nowhere, these Redskins showed some scallops and made plays when they needed to be made. Perhaps the most impressive piece of the comeback was the phenomenally “un-Gibbs” decision to throw to Moss on fourth and two with just under two minutes remaining.
So what next? A letdown next week against Arizona or continued confidence leading to a showdown in Dallas? Who am I kidding? Let’s forget I mentioned Dallas…the last thing I want to do is get back on that schneid.

More likely it was the sausage
well, the saints ain't all that good. but a win is a win in the nfl, and a hot plate of scallops is a hot plate of scallops. eat up, brees.
apparently this was the hottest game on record at fedex field. global warming could be a boon for the skins.
I think they were inspired by Cooley showing his "redskin"
for the world...that and the difficult pop TE quiz they have to do.
Can someone explain the scallops comments to me?
i think scallops are similar to the schneid...but that's just a hunch.
That's right, New Orleans. You survived the hurricane, but you should've evacuated when you heard the Zornado was comin' at ya!!!!
Anyone that gets excited about this win needs to check their scallops. Half the Saints were injured and we still almost pissed the game away with a stench similar to after eating asparagus. But I do like the aggressive play calling. It has been a long time coming. Scallops to the Zornado for the call on 4th and 2. I think we are going to enjoy watching this team play when they start to figure this sytem out.
Is anyone else who went to the game and sat in the upper deck still ready to puke? I know I am. I'm not sure if it was the heat, the lack of water (due to the short funds in my wallet), or the astonishingly high number of beached-whales and Fupas in my section (429).
Scallop for Scallop the skins are as good as any team in the NFL. Zornagain might be onto something with the global warming comment, the heat makes it easier for the skins to sear the opposing scallops right into submission. Go Skins!
JTW77 - You don't know shrimp from scallops as far as I'm concerned. Getting excited about this win is like getting excited about scallops that have been on the grill too long. It might be a scallop but it taste like rubber.
