Week 3 Recap: Zornholed! Cards Get it Rough
Written by DCist contributor Rob Birgfeld
It was just the Cardinals. No doubt about it. But these Cardinals came in confident and 2-0 for the first time since 1999, and no one had any idea what to expect from our Redskins. The Week 1 portrait of ineptitude or the Week 2 team that showed offensive promise? Well, the Redskins gave fans a little of both yesterday at FedEx Field on their way to a 24-17 victory.
Right off the bat, the Skins moved down the field for an impressive score. A methodical march ending with a Portis touchdown that made even the biggest doubters think, “maybe Zorn is on to something here.” But alas, the Redskins reverted back to what we’ve all been used to you for years. Forty-seven yards in the half’s next 17 plays.
But the second half brought some urgency and some life back to this team. Jason Campbell had what may have been his best performance as Redskin. Calm and collected, Campbell made no serious errors, threw for two touchdowns (including the game winning strike to Santana Moss) and has yet to throw an interception in this young season. Knock on scallops.
Things are generally looking up. Durant Brooks had some good punts for a change—saving his job for another week. Cooley had another solid game with seven catches 72 yards. Rookie wide out Devin Thomas even had some impressive plays including a touchdown that was called back in the third quarter. In fact, even Carlos Rogers shook off his tendency to drop any and all balls in his hands with a huge tipped pass interception and return to set up the go-ahead score.
Now onto Dallas, who made a statement last night working over the Packers in Green Bay to remain unbeaten at 3-0. (Side note: we did see Colt Brennan and Matt Leinart watching the Cowboys-Packers game at Mr. Smith’s in Georgetown last night.) So to all you fans/haters out there, can the Skins shock everyone with a big win at Big D? Well, I wouldn’t bet on it…but we all know that anything can happen when it comes to cowboys and indians.
