In the annals of heartbreaking, senseless violence in the District of Columbia, this one ranks right up there at the top. WJLA and the Post both have stories about the shooting death of 18-year-old Tanganika Stanton in Northeast over the weekend. The story D.C. police are telling is that Stanton was approached by 19-year-old Terrence Jones while she was sitting outside her home eating a hamburger. In an apparent attempt to flirt with her, Jones asked Stanton to make him a burger. When both she and her mother refused to cook him food, Jones left, then returned with a gun and shot up the house. Stanton and her mother were both shot; Stanton died, while her mother was shot in the foot and is expected to make a full recovery. The Post's story plays up the weird hamburger aspect of the shooting, but WJLA's video report makes the important point that this was really about a young man who was aggressively engaging in street harassment. He felt rejected, and lashed out. It's a horrifying story for any woman who is accustomed to street harassment from men in this city. Jones has been arrested and is being held without bond.

If what I read is true about his feeling of rejection reported by WJLA and seeming to imply he's a victim than i won't be watching WJLA until they get it right. Shame on them.
Ah, darn, monkeyrotica got to it before me. I was going to say that it was OBVIOUSLY the Hamburgler, who obviously has been in withdrawal due to his recent court battle that requires him to maintain a minimum of 100 feet between him and the nearest fast food joint at all times.

I want to make a comment connecting this to the stupid forcing gun owners to have insurance if they want a gun article, but it just seems cold hearted.

Your comment suggests that half the asshats out there doign this kind of garbage make it to school in the first place... on the other hand, that might be an interesting incentive to keep kids in school! Don't pay them for grades, give them a commemorative DC v. Heller gun upon graduation!

As for Jones may he have hamburgers shoved into his lower orifices for many years, and everything but hamburgers shoved into his upper orifices. I am sure that will not be a problem where he is going.

It's sadly not the only time this has happened. In Florida, Mildred Beaubrun was shot and eventually died from her gunshot wounds because she rejected some sorry, trifling thug, and Adilah Gaither was killed here in DC for something similar. Those sadly aren't the only women who were senselessly killed for rejecting these sorry men. What will it take to make the streets to be safer for women

The sad thing is that he'll be convicted on manslaughter charges (because his lawyers will convince one of this city's finest jury pools that he was in emotional distress) he'll be sentenced to 15 to life, and get out in 7.
as far as punishment goes...
1) there's no chance someone who murdered another person over a cheeseburger gave any thought to the possible consquences. the guys is mentally fucked.
2) my biggest qualm with the death penalty is it's not harsh enough. people die all the time, and their punishment is over with. life of solitary i think is a much more fitting and harsher punishment. no books. only bread, baloni and water. and decades to reflect.

you'd expect a society of laws and stuff to bases it's laws and punishments according to some sort of positive outcome. so what's the point of executing someone, esp when private super max's are so good at at they do and can turn a profit to boot? Also, when you remove "of violence" from your line about "It's about society saying ..." I see one hell of a slippery slope.

White or black, it doesn't matter. I've had a chance to sit on a jury and the level of incompetence is astounding, regardless of race. People want be protected from crime but don't want to take actions to punish offenders. The same thing goes for judges and prosecutors... new felony case filings have decreased a third from 8,013 in 2004 to 5,256 in 2007, and of those new case felony filings, prosecutors ended up dismissing 1,367 (source: DC Courts). I don't know about anybody else, but it sure doesn't seem like crime declined by a similar percentage. I'm just waiting for the news that this animal has previous felonies and was out on probation/parole/bond.

Well, judging from the two juries I sat on, since I'm sure your implication is that black juries would be less inclined to convict, the people who were ready to throw away the key asap were black women. Of course, by saying that, I'm stereotyping as much as you.
The most incompetent people in the DC court system, by the way, are the lawyers, also judging from my pathetic experiences.
The solution is obvious...ban hamburgers.

I understand killing in self-defense (and I get that the death penalty can be seen as exactly that) what I don't get is the whole old testamenty ceremony of taking an eye for an eye. lock him up, put him on a a chain gang of some sort punching out license plates or repaving roads. We can keep a misfit from scoiety while giving the GDP a cheap bump. Why waste an able body when you don't have to?

The numbers you're citing are about prosecutors, not juries. Is there any evidence that District juries are less willing to convict than other juries? Because I've served on a jury for four criminal cases, and we convicted all four times.
From the link you provide, in 2007 District juries convicted felony defendants 57% of the time, or 67% of the time if you exclude mistrials and hung juries. I don't know how that compares with other jurisdictions, but a quick Google says that in 2003, US conviction rates nationally were 46% for rape, 69% for murder, and 54% for other felonies, so despite the apples-to-slightly older apples of a different cultivar nature of the comparison that might not be too far out of line.

The thing about this that nobody is talking about is how badly the NRA and other racist republicans want incidents like this to happen. They want less education for inner cities and looser gun laws. It's like a sick and twisted form of genocide. Make them stupid and angry about how poor they are, then give them guns.

I'm amazed at all you folks who get selected for jury duty. I've been summoned for jury duty maybe a half dozen times and I've never been selected to be on a jury. I wonder if it's because District prosecutors give in to the same kind of stupidity of alweis and just assume that: young Black man = not guilty vote.
Like clockwork, every year I'd get selected for jury duty in DC. And ever year, because I look like an psycho Korean liquor store owner, I'd get booted out of the jury pool.

I think you meant to post this on your conspiracy theorist blog. Because on any normal website people would just laugh at you, like I'm doing now.There is hardly any repulicans in DC and so I fuess you can only blame democrats for the failing schools if you are going to be purely political party about it. So Democrats must be racist because "They want less education for inner cities" and at least I can point to DC as proof even though I don't believe that statement. Care to back up yours?
As for the gun laws last I checked republicans were pushing for it everywhere because it is a silly little thing like a constitutional right. Plus I'm pretty sure black people were getting handguns well before 2 months ago when they became legal. to finish my swatting let me end with "personal responsibility". Look it up sometime.
