Grenade Found in Rock Creek Park
A maintenance worker found a grenade near the Carter Barron Amphitheater in Rock Creek Park early this morning. There's some confusion over whether the grenade is "live" or not -- the Post quotes a U.S. Park Police spokesperson as saying the grenade is genuine and not a toy, while WTOP has a source saying the grenade is live. An Army bomb squad is on the scene to deal with the device.
16th Street between Military Road and Colorado Avenue was closed for at least two hours this morning, but the road has since reopened. The AP also says that several homes were evacuated along 16th Street.

And i am very thankful that the grenade was found this morning before the Kids Stoddert Soccer league practices had started this afternoon. There are 100's of kids that practice at that complex each Wednesday afternoon!

I'm sure that by tomorrow we'll all hear how it was actually a bottle of grenadine. The only thing the upper 16th St. crowd was at risk of was some mean Shirley Temples.

And by grenade, what they meant was another dog-walker forgot to clean up after their pet. Have you seen the dog park, at 17th/S/New Hampshire? That place is a straight up arsenal!

if it was live, i gotta ask—how long does a grenade stay "not exploded" after you pull the pin out?

IMGoph, in this case, I think "live" means that it actually contains explosives (pin pulled or not) rather than just, you know, being made by Nerf.

Imgoph it's not the pulling of the pin that sets a grenade off. It's the handle opening up. And I'd say from my long military experience of watching war movies that the normal length of time is like 5-10 seconds. Or just long enough to get a witty line off, whichever is shorter.

thanks, guys....clearly i need to take a grenade class. why can't we have a decent land-grant extension office to teach classes like that??
