As a Richmond native, it seems odd to me that an Ellwood Thompson is not, in fact, located at the intersection of Ellwood and Thompson, but I'll definitely make the trek and check it out. I find it interesting that they are expanding, I wonder if they'll continue if this is successful...

dudes. you still don't get it. but you will Ellwoods is all about being responsible and that includes being affordable. Sales. Plus, education about what's really healthy. On top of all that, Really Good Tasting Food. Never complain about a grocery store in DC again after Ellwoods. CH is now living the good life.

The P Street Giant is such an unpleasant place. I was there yesterday evening in the "express" line, which was held up because the guy in front of me was lending his EBT card to his friend who was in the other "express" line. And then after I paid, getting from the checkout to the exit took forever because the friend who had no money decided that he couldn't wait to eat his carryout prepared food, so he just stood right there in the way, dropping his plastic fork wrapper and other trashall over the place. God I love to hate that store.

or another way to think about it, My shopping at either stores typically break out like this (and this includes going up and down every aisle and having a full buggy) 14th Street Giant: avg 45 minutes to shop and check out, even if all lanes have long crazy lines 9th Street Giant: avg 1hr 30 to shop and check out with long lines.

Lines at the Tivoli giant are going to be even longer once the P street giant closes. The people working in CH are friggin sugary sweet compared to the attitudes on 9th...only the employees at the RI Home Depot can make these folks seem like they are doing a good job.

Yes, it's time to stop pretending that the Heights is still a transitional neighborhood. When organic groceries and a Best Buy share the same real estate- it is a brave new world. I for one could not be happier, since after all I am a 5th degree black belt eco-yuppie who wears a vintage monocle, hand knitted pants, and I carry everything in reusable bags, even things that don't need to be carried- it's all true. Tough crowd! I personally am thrilled to have a convenient way to support local (100 mile radius) food producers. I'd rather give my money to them than to agri-business. And as the astute Disco Stu notes, this isn't just about politics, it's about taste - food that hasn't been freeze-dried to travel 3,000 miles just tastes better.

just a hunch, but I don't think that the lines at Giant will really be reduced. I'd imagine that the prices at the super-dupper organic store will be pretty high and most folks with regular sized paychecks will still be shopping at Giant.

The only way to reduce the ridiculous lines at the Columbia Heights Giant is to hire some cashiers who actually give a shit. That store employs some of the biggest assholes in all of DC.
