i am a nanny and while other nannies on this hill get today off i did not for i work for docs not feds.....i do not get many fed holidays off. just memorial day, labor day and the fourth of july. i only work four days so i get a three day weekend every week. would have been cool to have a four day weekend!

Awww, so sorry! I get Columbus day, Veteran's Day, the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. Not to mention Election day off as well as MLK day. I work for an association. The pay may be crap but we get buckets of time off.

I don't get either off, but I do get 2 floating holidays that can be taken whenever I want to make up for them. I also get the Friday after Thanksgiving off.

Time for my yearly annoyance that Metro doesn't seem able to create a real modified schedule. Even though ridership is lower than a normal weekday, it's still quite a bit higher during peak times than a normal Saturday. So why oh why are they unable to run Saturday service but with enhanced service during peak hours? Either normal rush hour for just those times or even 9-minute headways instead of the normal 6?

We get the day after Thanksgiving off in lieu of Columbus Day, and in election years, we get Veteran's Day off. The logic behind that one eludes me.

Nate, that's not totally surprising when you consider both universities have affiliated hospitals. In addition to probably having about 5,000 employees just for the university, that adds a significant chunk. Just a theory.

as an architect, i don't get columbus day or veterans day off. further, i don't know of ANY architects that get either of those days off. the general rule of thumb for our industry is... if construction companies are working, we are too.

That is a sweet cafeteria, IMGoph. Back when I was a contractor we didn't get Columbus Day off, but we weren't allowed to come into the building. And, of course, we weren't allowed to work at home. So we had to take a day of vacation or leave without pay. Not to mention the year the feds got off Christmas Eve at the last minute, and we had to take leave without pay to cover it. Like a reverse Christmas bonus! Not that I'm bitter or anything...

My office is on GW's campus (although I do not work for GW) and we follow their calendar. They are DC's second largest employer after the Federal Government and they are open. They observe neither Columbus Day nor Veterans Day.

I don't get Columbus Day off, but I do get Columbo Day off. Every September 16th I celebrate Peter Falk's birthday and go out and solve a homicide.The sad thing is, Reid, if you actually comitted eight full hours to a case, you probably could solve a murder here. Unless you work for the MPD or the Washington Post's Chandra Levy Department.

Oops, just noticed that with the "modified vacation schedule" they actually do still open at 5 a.m., and thus the major "inconvenience" people will face is longer-than-normal-for-rush-hour delays between trains. So sorry ... I'll feel all kinds of sympathy for you while I'm sleeping in.

i work for a gov't contractor who's very particular about following the Federal schedule--so we get both Veteran's Day and Columbus Day, but none of that day-after-a-holiday stuff. my bday is the day after Christmas, and since i think no one should have to work on her birthday, i take a vacation day. not a big deal, but i used to work for a start-up that gave you your bday off automatically, which i thought was a really cool perk.

here at NGS: columbus day offveterans day traded for day after thanksgivingday after christmas and day after new years off this yearplus, we get tomorrow off, and they announced yesterday that we will be getting every other friday off next year from april to october. at least we have that going for us. and the cafeteria.

How can something "technically" be a federal holiday? Either it is, or it isn't, and in this case it is. I hate to break it to those of you stuck working, but a significant percentage of the workers in the DC metro area are employed by either federal, state and local governments, or by non-profits or contractors who deliberately follow the Feds' calendar. That said, I agree that Metro should suck up the overtime wages and open for regular service on days like Columbus Day and Veterans Day. The delayed start time must be especially frustrating for people who still have to get work in those early morning hours, and it seems like it would be pretty easy to make a case for extending the service based simply on workplace/ridership stats.

Yes we get Columbus Day (the day of our great discoverer/destroyer (on what other holiday can you throw blood and piss off Italian people?)) and Veterans day, and every other god forsaken holiday which can somehow be excused and tolerated. The last place I worked was in an academic setting and the staff holidays that weren't taken during the academic term were traded out for a week around Christmas.

It's my understanding - at least in non-profit workplaces - that many offices "trade" a holiday on Columbus Day for the day after Thanksgiving off. It's not a bad deal, honestly.
