Will the Real Virginia Please Stand Up?

While Sen. John McCain's Saturday rally in Woodbridge appeared to go off without a hitch, his campaign continued its now well-worn tradition of saying something of questionable judgment over the weekend.

In an appearance on MSNBC on Saturday, McCain campaign talking head Nancy Pfotenhauer accused voter-rich Northern Virginia of not being, well, Virginia enough. "The Democrats have just come in from the District of Columbia," she said of the area. "The rest of the state, the real Virginia, if you will, will be very responsive to Senator McCain's message." Watch the clip above.

Far from being an isolated verbal gaffe, Pfotenhauer's claim follows in the footsteps of Joe McCain, who accused Northern Virginia of being "communist country," and Gov. Sarah Palin, who recently differentiated between "real America" and everything else. (Hint: "real" America votes McCain-Palin.)

We'll be the first to admit that densely populated Northern Virginia, a good chunk of which used to be part of the District a long, long time, leans further left than the rest of the state. Both Sen. Jim Webb and Gov. Tim Kaine, two of the state's most recent and high-profile Democrats elected to office, relied heavily on the counties closest to the District. And while Pfotenhauer surely isn't the first person to come up with a division between NoVA and RoVA (rest of Virginia), hers is the most obvious indication that the McCain camp is giving up on the area. How else would one justify accusing tens of thousands of voters of not being real Virginians?

We will give Pfotenhauer credit, though. She's on to our flawlessly-executed plan to drain the District of its residents just so they can vote against the Republican Party in a battleground state. (Just wait until we shift our attention to West Virginia and North Carolina in 2012!) If anyone is wondering why D.C. bars and clubs have been so quiet as of recent, it's because we sent all our scenesters out to Leesburg.

"tens of thousands" that’s one hell of a underestimation: Fairfax has over 600,000 resister voters alone.

Hey, "real Virginia" if you dislike NOVA so much, how about sending back their money?

See, I wasn't kidding when I said the rest of the state refers to NoVa as "occupied Virginia."

on a slightly related note I just found out that route 7 near Bailey's Crossroads in *ahem* "Northern Virginiastan" is known as the "Wahhabi Corridor". I've cluelessly been buying my hummus freedom dip there for a while now.

""The Democrats have just come in from the District of Columbia," "

That's exactly backwards. Where was she before she moved to Oakton, anyway?

Fuck this anorexic bonehead. Her reasoning doesn't even make sense: Democrats moving in from Washington DC? What?!? At least she was honest enough in her definition of 'Real Virginians' as those who are 'Southern (w/ a capital S) in nature', meaning those w/ "The South will Rise Again" on their bumpers and "Macaca" on their lips.

I was just in "real virginia" a few weekends ago inbetween Shenandoah and Richmond. Let me tell you, I saw plenty of Obama/Biden signs

seriously, why the fuck do these people feel the need to divide and find an "other" to run against?

time and again, it's nothing but fear and "those people aren't like you". regardless of who you're going to vote for in this election, you have to admit that the obama campaign is MUCH MUCH more inclusive, especially in their language, than the mccain camp.

Where does the Tidewater region usually vote. FREDTERP

I have a friend in Virginia Beach ("real Virginia") who was invited to play on a foursome with John McCain's brother (who also lives in Virginia Beach) earlier this summer.

My friend reported that John McCain's brother told several overtly racist jokes about blacks during the 18 holes. He also commented that the brother clearly did not inherit the intellect that John possesses.

So, I get some are still keeping the "real" in "real" Virginia...

Real Virginia - is that a minor league soccer team?

Tidewater/Hampton Roads is normally split between Democrats and Republicans in the same way the DC area is. The cities close to downtown, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News go Democratic, and the suburbs VA Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk go Republican.

Also, SE VA is also an area where there is more tax money leaving the area than going back in. So they do have similar gripes as NoVA regarding the VA legislature.

Ok, so Virginia is clearly 'in play' .. can we say the same about fräulein Pfotenhauer? cause I wouldn't mind a pull on her lever to be quite honest.

By her metric Robert E. Lee wasn't a real Virginian.

fredterp: the tidewater region usually votes in their designated precincts...

I bet Nancy checks her car door locks twice every time her car ventures inside the Beltway.

I check my locks every time I drive inside the beltway. Then again, I live inside the beltway.

Oh, that Nancy Pfotenhauer. I find her views detestable and her intellectual dishonesty contemptible. And yet...

"seriously, why the fuck do these people feel the need to divide and find an "other" to run against?"

I dunno if they feel a need.. it's just that this style of campaigning is much easier than any other. And until recently, it had a very high success rate.

I love that McCain's campaign headquarters is in the "fake" part of VA.

Well...I would say that Buchanan County is as "real" as it gets in Virginia, and they consistently go blue...what a twit.

As my friend frequently says, "The Stupid are always with us..." Nancy, you are so good to remind us.

politburo: knock on wood that this finally proves to the be exception.

pgcist: since i was able to get a shout-out for an avatar award recommendation earlier today, let's go to the well another time for next week. i really hope your avatar gets some consideration.

i love the maryland flag.

Nancy Pfotenhauer's number is 703.242.0197.

Let her know how you feel about "fake" Virginia.

The whole stupid NoVA/RoVA thing is sooooooooo 2006. Can we PLEASE not bring that trite, sad little phrase back from the depths of obscurity, for the love of sweet little kittens??

Just came back from camping out West of the Shenandoah, and sadly saw McMilf signs all over the place up and down the roads. I think the "Dem's" need to canvas outside of where there Zip cars take them, out past the Diamond and get to Lynchburg, middle Virginia, where the good "Pro-Freedom" Americans live instead of canvassing the same "Blue" counties.

McCain went to the very affluent Episcopal high school in Alexandria. Part of NoVa. Does that make him a fake Virginian too? One of those Dems invading from DC.

Fucking bitch.

I agree with her premise, but I think it needs to be taken further. All you fake Virginians, get out, immediately. That means you, George Allen, and you can take your cowboy boots and your noose with you. Proof of Virginia birth will be required before you are permitted to drive on I-66 or speak with a discernible accent. In lieu of producing a birth certificate, you may be asked to pass the "ham test," the details of which will be disclosed only on a need-to-know basis.

Dont knock fake vaginas until you've tried one. My Pocket Pal has got me through many a lonely night when there were no hobos to strangle.

Yawn. Let us know how well that strategy works out for you, Nancy.

Don't underestimate the voting power of those who sit around all day smoking meth and watching Ice Road Truckers. These "hellbillies" have decided every French election since Pompideu.

So, clearly she didn't drive through Richmond, Newport News or Va Beach on the way to Nova? And now that college students can register to vote in VA, maybe one of he educated, liberal college towns too?

Sexy Fistum: Your avatar still looks like a tiny movie of some dude spooging in your eye. When are you going to fix that shit?

Might as well proportionally split up the electoral votes between NoVA and RoVA. Obama only needs six of thirteen electoral votes from Virginia to virtually cinch the electoral college, regardless of how Nevada, Colorado, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina, and Florida go.

I'm not from real Virginia? How's that exactly? Born in Richmond and raised in Charlottesville, I wonder what is this so called real Virginia is. The gas is running low on this media machine.

Don't worry, I think they still consider Charlottesville and Richmond the real Virginia.

""The Democrats have just come in from the District of Columbia," "

I would like to see the statistics on that. I doubt that the majority of the new Democrats (or others) come from DC alone. Folks in Northern Virginia come from all over the country (and all over the world). The DC area including Northern Virginia is very transient; so many people move here to work. This woman obviously has no clue what's she's talking about. If this kind of divisiveness works then we're doomed as a country.

of course there are no statistics for that, kenyaoa. this woman is just blowing smoke up everyone's ass...

She seriously needs a sandwich
