Morning Roundup: Slippery When Wet Edition

2008_1028_MR.jpgGood morning, D.C. We're all sitting around wondering whether these cold and rainy conditions might end up spoiling tonight's High Heel Race. The Capital Weather Gang is predicting continued cold, lots of wind, and "a stray shower or snow flurry" tonight. Snow?! Bring your mittens AND your umbrella tonight, kiddos. Of course, we realize it could be much, much worse. We could be in Philadelphia right now.

More on North Capitol Shooting: The Post has a little bit more on the four shootings of four different men in four different cars on North Capitol Street early Monday morning. It's still unclear what provoked the shooting and whether any of the men knew each other, but all four cars were going north on North Capitol when the shooting began. All of the men are expected to survive.

Stevens to Keep Going: Sen. Ted Stevens has vowed to continue his re-election campaign despite being convicted yesterday on seven felony counts stemming from lying on financial disclosure forms. Although the U.S. Senate would begin proceedings to expel any member convicted of a felony, they also typically wait until all appeals processes are exhausted before doing so, so theoretically Stevens could win the election and head back to the Senate for a not insignificant period of time, and then later be expelled.

District-run Mental Health Centers May Close: WJLA got the scoop on what appears to be a plan to close the District's five city-operated outpatient mental health centers and instead contract with private clinics to provide services. D.C. government officials have yet to disclose the details of such a plan, which would presumably save the city some money, but naturally both clinic employees and patients are concerned.

If you've ever been trapped in gridlock at that light at North Cap and New York, you'd know why those guys started shooting.

Of course, we realize it could be much, much worse. We could be in Philadelphia right now.

Though we live in uncertain times, this remains true as ever.

I have to agree. Since Philadelphia Water Ice Factory opened on H Street, and they announced a Philly-based Italian Deli moving there as well, there's really no reason to even go to Philly. Except maybe if you're nostalgic for 1970s-era gang violence.

You lost me... I prefer my drag queens wet and slippery...

It has rained for most of the last 5 years I've been going to the high heel race. Drag queens are a tougher stock than y'all.

VOTE STEVENS . . . A Man of Conviction!

They even sell Tastykakes at CVS now, Monkey - the only thing good to come out of Philly (oh yeah, and the Constitution.)

philly does seem have the corner (at least the midatlantic corner) on byob places. that's at least a kind of good reason to go!

And its a shame the Phillies couldn't seal the deal last night; perfect weather to put out couch fires. They keep saying on the telly the city has won't a major championship since the early 80's.. they know Rocky is just a movie, right?

The best thing that ever came out of Philly are those life experiences that created Rob McElhenney twisted sense of humor.

And yet I still can't get a decent roast pork/broccoli rabe/sharp cheddar Italian sub in this burg. Instead, we have Subways on every block peddling the same dozen varieties of slop sandwiches that taste IDENTICALLY LIKE NOTHING. WTF?

What's up with all the shootings on North Capitol the past week?

The best thing to come out of Philadelphia was David Lynch and "Eraserhead."

the best thing to come out of philly is my family!

re: the mental health centers. oy.

the last thing this city needs is less attention paid to those with mental health problems. i hope this will work out so we have better services for those who need it, but i'm skeptical. we don't need more banita jacks and that lady who ran over everyone at unifest...

The North Cap shootings smell of gang turf wars. The Swampoodle and Bloomingdale "crews" are duking it out for control of the burgeoning opium and ether trade. Only a matter of time before the Chinablock "tongs" enter the fray, then it's rickshaw drivebys galore and the streets littered with bloodied coolies. Only Kwai Chang Caine can help us now, and he's too busy seeking water.

Why the Philly hate? Philly has one thing DC doesn't - terrific restaurants in the mid to cheap price range. You can go to pretty much any corner pub in Philadelphia and get good, friendly service and hot, tasty food.

That just doesn't happen often in DC.

The Swampoodle Citizen's Militia needs to be called out! Get yer flintlocks! And yer whiskey!

Hillman - Are you suggesting the a$$hole population in DC is higher than in Philadelphia, and therfore, DC has appropriate level of service?

If so, I'm inclined to agree.

I totally agree Hillman - though unfortunately for Philadelphia, it's full of Philadelphians. :-)

Seriously though - that city should always be in debt to the many Italian immigrants that set up such a rich community of cooks. That's what DC does not have a history of. And everything good in Philadelphia starts with the bread - they know how to make it. From that base you get great cheesesteaks, roast pork and Italian hoagies, etc.

Go in to any great food culture and you'll find great bread. France, Italy, Vietnam, India...

Here we go again. Let's bash DC because the bread here sucks and the bakers here don't know WTF they're doing! In other cultures, bread is important. You have people lining up at 5am for baguettes in Paris. Here, bread is some bloated dough Wonder Bread crap that's just there to hold your Oscar Myer chemically extruded meat-style product and hopefully stifle the smell of decay so you can choke your sandwich down because you're late for a meeting with your client. The bread here sucks because nobody cares enough to make it properly.

Bread in DC sucks hard. That may be the case, but at least you can go to any trendy, upscale neighborhood and there's at least five stores where you can buy a $9,000 leather couch. And once you get the couch, then you get the power. And then you get the women. And then you get them to make you your bread.

Philly envy...that's all it is. Come on, DCers...you only wish the mayor could bomb some of this crime outta here.

Dang...where's Wilson Goode when you need 'em?
