Get in the Spirit: Halloween Picks
Halloween-themed events and activities abound for the rest of the week. Here's just a few of the spooky upcoming goings on we've heard about that sound like they might actually be fun for adults. Add your suggestions in the comments.
THURSDAY:
>> Local author Eric Nuzum is celebrating the release of the paperback version of The Dead Travel Fast: Stalking Vampires from Nosferatu to Count Chocula, his compendium of all things vampire, with what he tells DCist will be "one of the more unusual book readings that Barnes and Noble has hosted." Find out what Eric has in store at the free 7:30 p.m. event at the Georgetown Barnes and Noble (3040 M Street NW). Read our review of The Dead Travel Fast before you go.
>> The National Library of Medicine is hosting a free screening of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban at 6 p.m., in celebration of the opening of their new exhibit, "Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, History, and Magic". The event will probably be a little kid-heavy, but we know plenty of you are big Harry Potter fans. Get there at 5 p.m. to get a sneak peak of the exhibit and snag some free refreshments and candy.
>> Looking for one of those giant Haunted House Attractions? The biggest ones in these parts are out in the Maryland suburbs. There's Bennett's Curse in Hanover, MD, and Markoff's Haunted Forest in Dickerson, MD. Both are going to require a car to reach, and cost upwards of $20.

FRIDAY:
>> If you can cut out of work early, there will be a free screening at 1:15 p.m. of the classic 1920 silent film Der Golem in Georgetown University's McNeir Auditorium. A rabbi in 16th-century Prague creates a clay golem, with the help of a demon, that helps him save the Jews of Prague from being expelled by the Holy Roman Emperor, but the creature runs out of control, wreaking havoc. Local early music ensemble Hesperus will provide a live musical accompaniment appropriate to the period.
>> Love scary stories? SpeakEasy DC is hosting an actual spooky campfire out in the woods in PG County for people willing to make the trek out to share terrifying tales while eating s'mores. The 'Ween in the Woods campfire at Patuxent River Park costs $15 for all the hot cocoa and scary stories you can stand. All the details are here.
>> If you don't have a house party to go to but still want to dress up and dance, there's a couple of decent options. Number one is probably the Palace of Wonders party, which will feature 3 full hours of Halloween-themed burlesque and freak show talent, a costume contest, and lots of free candy. Buy your $15 ticket in advance here. The Black Cat is hosting a "Bhangraween" dance night featuring the excellent DJ Rekha and the Doonya dance troupe. That's $13 on the mainstage. And if you're just looking for the cheapest cover in town, look no further than the Halloween version of Liberation Dance Party at DC9. For only $6 you can dance all night, drink free rail cocktails from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and enter the costume contest to win up to $250 in prizes.
SATURDAY:
>> Still feeling that indescribable itch to wander through a corn maze? There are several around the greater metro area, but the best one is probably the Winterbrook Farms corn maze in Thurmont, Md. It's open from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and admission costs $5. More details here.
>> Landless Theatre's shows tend to be campy with a side of cheesy, but isn't that just what the doctor ordered for Halloween? Check out an encore performance of Diamond Dead: A Zombie Rock Show tonight at 10:30 p.m. (also Friday), which was one of the more popular entries in this year's Capital Fringe Festival. Tickets are $15.
BEYOND:
>> The National Building Museum still has a few more Ghost Tours on their calendar after Halloween. Try the Monday, Nov. 3 lantern-light tour led by the ghost of Mary Surratt to exercise all remaining demons before Election Day. 8 p.m., tickets are $18.
>> The UK's Nunkie Theatre Company is making a stop in D.C. Nov. 3-4 for performances of Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad, an adaptation of the ghost stories of M.R. James. Performances will be at The Corner Store at 900 South Carolina Ave. SE. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. 7:30 p.m. both nights.

Like any of us can afford these ticket prices. Your best bet for cheap thrills remains to park on Fletchertown Road and wait for the Goatman to appear in all his priapic glory. And for those in Commie Occupied Northern Virginia, head out to Clifton and wait for the Bunnyman. And for those lucky enough to be in DC, just hang out on your porch on 11th Street and wait for the driveby.

My place is real messy. It's horrible. It's a real haunted house. Bags full of recycled items. Plastic
bags full of junk. A strange smell lingers. Clothes strewn around. An unmade bed. Boo! You're all invited at $10 bucks a pop. Free souvenirs(packets of soy sauce).

Maryland and Virginia have a whole bunch of real cool haunted houses this year! Just look for homes with the porch lights off and signs that say "No candy at this residence."
