Out and About: Weekend Picks

2008_1030_picks.jpgWe're experimenting with moving the Weekend Picks to Thursdays. Let us know what you think.

THURSDAY:

>> The AFI Silver is screening both Rosemary’s Baby (7 p.m.) and Night of the Living Dead (9:45 p.m.). Get in the Halloween spirit with two of the greatest horror genre films of all time.

>> The Velvet Lounge's Bee's Knees All Hallows Eve Party will feature a costume contest and performances by Little Teeth, Sleeping in the Aviary and a bunch of DJs. $3 cover, $8 to see the bands, 9 p.m.

>> Local author Eric Nuzum is celebrating the release of the paperback version of The Dead Travel Fast: Stalking Vampires from Nosferatu to Count Chocula, his compendium of all things vampire, with what he tells DCist will be "one of the more unusual book readings that Barnes and Noble has hosted." Find out what Eric has in store at the free 7:30 p.m. event at the Georgetown Barnes and Noble (3040 M Street NW). Read our review of The Dead Travel Fast.

>> Cirque du Soleil opens Kooza today at National Harbor. Tickets are $55 to $125. 8 p.m., performances run until December 14.

>> Tokyo's Polysics sport neon orange jumpsuits and anime-style haircuts, and play spastic, new-wave-influenced synth-punk. They're playing with Jaguar Love (ex-Blood Brothers/Pretty Girls Make Graves) and Black Gold at the Black Cat's backstage, $12, 9 p.m.

FRIDAY:

>> It's Halloween! Consult our Halloween Picks for a few last minute ideas of where to go out. But really, we hope that after you get all dressed up, you have an awesome house party to go to, because Friday evening traffic + Halloween is going to = kind of a mess out there.

>> If you're just looking for the best costume contest prize in town, look no further that the 9:30 Club, where some lucky winner at The Pietasters show will receive free tickets to every show at the club in November and December.

>> Whatever you decide to do, don't drink and drive (and if you know what's good for you, don't go anywhere near Georgetown).

SATURDAY:

>> The National Museum of the American Indian is hosting a two-day Día de los Muertos celebration today and Sunday. Get your sugar skulls and pan de muerto at the big festival, 10:30 a.m.–4 p.m. both days.

>> Rhys Darby of Flight of the Concords is doing an early seated music/comedy show at 9:30 Club. $25, 6 p.m.

>> West Coast emcee Murs is in town, joined at the Rock and Roll Hotel by Ivy League-educated crew Kidz In The Hall, Big Pooh of Little Brother fame, and Isaiah. $14, 8:30 p.m.

>> Brooklyn's Bishop Allen returns to the Black Cat, with Drink Up Buttercup and Electric Owls. $13, 9 p.m.

>> Washington National Opera opens Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia tonight at 7 p.m., marking the company debut of soprano Renée Fleming. Performances continue through November 17, some with Sondra Radvanovsky instead of Fleming.

three questions then, sommer:

1) does this mean aaron and kriston are running this tomorrow?

2) does this mean that i can tell my boss that the weekend officially starts tonight and i don't ever have to come in on friday again?

3) what happened to sunday? is it no longer part of the weekend?

1) Aaron and Kriston are still only doing Sat. and Sun., though I am actually taking a rare day off tomorrow.

2) You can do anything you like, man.

3) There were coincidentally no events I wanted to recommend this Sunday. Sunday events will still appear in the Picks, should there be any that look good.

@Sommer,
This should be at least as cool as always, combining Thursdays' About Tonights with the weekends' Picks, making for four-day megafun.

I don't know if it's possible with Movable Type...but it'd be extra useful if instead of the jump to the full article always being after the first part of the posting, you segmented the text so only the current day or net 2 days display on the index page (with the "continue reading" link taking readers to the full content as usual). Basically this would involve a way to cut the post mid-way to mark the beginning of the part you want to show on the index, so that text before that mark only shows on the full article page (as would the text after the jump as always. Again, I have no idea if you could make this change easily, and have my doubts since I don't think I can possibly do this with my WordPress blog platform.

Enjoy the day off & the rest of Halloween weekend!

What makes Georgetown the place to avoid on Halloween?

I was wondering the same... Maybe people are compelled to throw themselves down the Exorcist Stairs?

Nah, it's that the crowd can easily reach critical mass, and some people can't control themselves.

Hope this isn't too spammy, but we, Detox Retox are playing tonight at Asylum in Adams Morgan. We are told by the bar there's no cover and that there will be $100 for the best costume. It's going to be really fun.
