Have you seen this Washington Independent post (City Desk picked it up, too) about a bizarre letter that's been circulated to Clarendon residents who are displaying Obama signs in front of their houses? The unsigned screed accuses (presumably white) neighbors who are outwardly supporting Barack Obama for president of only liking the candidate due to some inner need to prove to people that they are not racist. It's pretty disgusting, and would be more upsetting if it didn't read as though it was probably written by someone who needs to be medicated. According to the Independent, a neighborhood email list has blown up with comments speculating who might be responsible. Any Clarendon residents (or any other areas of Northern Virginia for that matter) actually get one of these things?

Beerlarious.
Probably McCain's brother reaching out to the commies.
Had an Obama sign up since the first debate (when it conveniently arrived in the mail) and haven't seen this in physical form yet.
It'd probably be more disgusting if it weren't so incoherent. You're only supporting Obama because he's black to prove you're not a racist, therefore don't vote for him to prove you're not? Huh?
This is only one step better than TimeCube.
apparently our house is not yuppie enough to warrant getting this letter :-/
This is almost as good as that letter to the Daily Klansman questioning whether Mccain was white enough.
The fringe has been peddling this shit since the primaries.. all that loony garbage is going to come out in these last 29 days.
Given the winking tone and the reference to Stuff White People Like, I'd characterize the writer of this letter as "some wiseass who thinks he's being funny" way before I'd see it as the act of a deranged or disordered mind. The underlying argument is obviously ridiculous, but there's nothing in the vocabulary or the grammar that makes it sound like the real warblings of a cracked mind. My guess is that the author is more of a right-leaning, winkingly, ironically racist /b/tard and less of an old school racist, tinfoil-hat wearing crackpot.
I wonder if that person will wander over to DC and stick a few of those in people's mailbox? Probably not since he is correct in his understanding that every single person in DC is for-reals black, and there are no white yuppies, and he will likely get his ass beat to a bleeding pulp with track-bike wheels and broken Rioja bottles after the first house.
I love his shout out to stuffwhitepeoplelike.com, can't you just see this crazy fucker humorlessly perusing that site as if it were a sociological survey commissioned by the fourth Reich to "know thy enemy."
Nate; good profiling skills, do you happen to work for the FBI? If so, you don't have to tell us.
For those of you wondering about the origin of this letter, look closer. It was signed!
Zorro is clearly the author of this letter. I wasn't aware that he now lives in Clarendon, though.
Surely somebody is having a good laugh over this right about now. Leave it to Clarendon residents to get so worked up over something that is pretty obviously the work of some attention-deprived 16-year-old.
it's probably one of the young, white, fratty, recent implants that lives in clarendon now and moved there because it's such an "urban village"/there are way too many bars. those asshats are all lame and have hour commutes everyday down 66 to their consulting(?) jobs.
i know i sound bitter but the guy who owns orpheus records has a funny rant about the "inebriated denizens" of clarendon, too. that neighborhood is going down the crapper. it's obnoxious like georgetown but without any of the charm or attractive people.
I live in Arlington, support BHO, drive a Volvo and shop at Whole Foods. Where's my damned letter?
It must be the same people who did that weird anti-muslim joke at AU.
Only they are capable of humor so dry, so clever that even they aren't sure whether they are making fun Pants Judge Pearson, or of themselves.
They are getting ready to turn themselves in now, remorseful because the letter probably resulted in most peopel with an IQ of less than 156 to vote for Supreme Vermin for President. Those with an IQ of 156 and over would have voted for him anyway.
Isn't the iphone still this season's iphone? Am I that behind the times?
distantantennas, is that you Mr. Gill? I am the cupcake baker.
for the rest of you, to be fair, if you live in a predominantly white, middle-class suburb, aren't you at least a little bit racist by default?
Speaking as someone who does not live in a predominantly white, middle-class suburb, absolutely not. In fact, it's a patently ridiculous notion.
This is hilarious. It completely rips into the "if you don't support Obama, you are a racist" meme that's been all over the nutroots for the past few months.
HCE: Not at all. The right-wing fringe has been accusing Obama supporters of harboring "white guilt" since the primaries.
politburo
well yes, as a person who does not match my scenario, you shouldn't agree
patently ridiculous? does that mean someone is making money off it? with a patent?
HCE
you're damned if you do, you're damned if you don't
The Republicans and the McCain campaign are increasingly revolting. With this post on DCist and this article today in the post - I'm complete disgusted.

Racist by default? So because I choose to live in a safe neighborhood in Arlington (Clarendon) that is cheap in rent, close to a metro, 10 minutes away from my office, with a backyard for my dog to run around in and within walking distance to my favorite bars - this makes me a racist?
I guess I did deserve to receive that piece of shit letter from my "Clarendon neighbor." Maybe I should take my Obama sign down too. I'm sorry, I forgot...am I living in the United States, where I'm allowed to openly support the candidate of my choosing? Someone, please clarify this for me...and preferably before November 4th.
jesus you guys, are your joke detectors broken? this is a blog, you are people who comment on blogs. stop taking yourselves so seriously.
is this all pre-debate hysteria? loosen up. you have access to the internet and the rights to publish your opinions on it, you have it better than 98% of people in this f-ed up world. most people get this angry about food or invasion from neighboring countries. if you're so fired up try putting it to more use, because one cup of coffee or a surge of electricity and the server this site resides on, along with your "important ideas," is history.
with that said, I wonder if McCain will score any "black guilt" votes? joke
You can openly support the candidate of your choosing, but others can also openly challenge that candidate. There is nothing illegal about these letters, as long as they weren't put into mailboxes (that would be a federal offense, as mailboxes are only to be used for stamped mail).
I'm personally outraged by this, and I don't see why I can't express that.
Sure, they have a right to send this letter to their neighbors, but, I think it's disgusting (and shameful).
Obama signs are this season's iPhone? If you can watch porn on them I'm in.
I'm not going to start digging a bomb shelter cause some ding-a-ling in Clarendon distributed a letter. But you can tell we're in the last month - an African-American is pulling away in the polls and some people are losing their shit.
In Clarendon
Florida
Even in London
Fair enough, but if you're outraged by a letter, what would you feel in the instance that someone actually gets hurt? Like the case of the hate crime in Georgetown? And what if someone actually dies over crap like this, what then? Super-outrage?
Times like these you have to take a page from Monkey's book and just have a laugh. [By the way I am pissed at the Daily Klansman, they don't do address-forwarding, what is that crap?] Cause damn...people are strange....you know? If this is simply the worst thing that happens to you this year, that is a pretty sweet year.
You think I should just have a laugh, and I think you should mind your own bidness - don't go 'round telling people how to feel.
I don't think anyone's claimed this is the worst thing to happen to them this year.. I don't get this idea that because there are worse things out there, that means you can't or shouldn't complain about something.
Politburo used the word "fringe"; I would add the adjective "lunatic" in front since not all fringe are as extreme as i thought it was implied then and because the letter could be coming from anyone with severe Projectionist Personality Disorder.
Marigold, as disgusting as this letter is - to "run for the hills" point there are (i think) (non-racist) environmentalists that do far more damage and hurt than this letter can possibly wield.
We received the letter - in Lyon Village.
It is a sad sad day....
I have my guesses, but who knows...
You racist if you don't vote for Obama.
You racist if you do vote for Obama.
You racist if you white.
You racist if you black or blue.
We all is racist now.
Wee!
I never suggested this was the worst news all year. I find it upsetting because it makes me ashamed of people in my community - whoever they are. I fully support their right to do this sort of thing, but I wish the desire wasn't in their heart.
That's pretty white to get upset over a letter.
