Every election season sees its share of campaign materials, from the expected (yard signs) to the somewhat exotic (Kwame Brown's campaign-mobile). But repeat candidate Michael A. Brown may have stumbled across the most frustrating in his current quest for an At-Large seat on the D.C. Council.
In recent weeks, small fliers for Brown's campaign have appeared on the windshields of cars throughout the city. Last week, cars in Mt. Pleasant were targeted; today I spied blocks worth of leafletized cars along V Street near Busboys and Poets. Some windshields have even seen multiple fliers left behind at once, an apparent hint that the recipients should hand them out to their friends.
We get the idea: sending out a team to put fliers on cars is faster and easier than knocking on hundreds of doors, and District residents are bound to use their cars at some point between now and November, right? But in practice, drivers react the same way they would if it was a parking ticket or a cheap flier for a seedy business. Worse yet, many of Brown's fliers invariably end up on the street as litter. Sure, that's not exactly his fault, but it also doesn't make his campaign look good. Add to that some noises we've been hearing about the frequency of his robo-call efforts, and the candidate, who currently leads in the polls for the 2nd At-large spot, could potentially start to feel some blowback.
We interviewed Brown during his 2006 run for mayor, and can attest that he's a nice guy and a committed public advocate. But the flier-on-the-windshield thing has got to go.

Car Pushed Into Anacostia River By Train

Brown isn't being very GREEN.
I found one of those five feet inside my front door yesterday, like they were using some kind of leaf blower to spam my house. It went straight into the recycling with the three chinese take-out menus I've gotten under my door this week.
If I get another one of those robo-calls I'm crossing him off my list. Really, enough is enough Mr. Brown.
Yeah, I wish all his damn friends would stop calling me!! Seriously, who listens to those calls/messages??
He's like an overused ad campaign and when I just recently listened to his robo-call I decided from his message that he's nothing different and won't vote for him.
A couple weekends ago he got Adams Morgan, the person even went into my buliding's parking lot to get every. single. car.
So I pulled them off every. single. car.
From Brown's website:
"Our Issues
Issue papers will be released in the coming weeks. Please check back."
That is Brown in a nutshell. He's a hack who's done nothing but be a prominent Democrat's son. His only "issue" that seems to drive his campaign(s) is a desire to be an elected official. He'd so quickly fall into the machine fold with Thomas, Barry, and (the other) Brown.
The moment I got a call from Brown's robot I decided I wasn't going to vote for him. But when his lame flier showed up under my windshield wiper, it totally changed my mind. Great campaign!
They've been hitting Logan Circle every few days. They got my brother-in-law's rental car with MD tags twice in one weekend.
I don't see how a candidate having his people come to my neighborhood and litter is going to make me want to vote for him.
ok, so I'm not really paying attention and until yesterday, I didn't know who michael brown was... then I got a flyer on my car... and that alone is reason enough for me to vote for the other guy... whomever the other guy might be...
The last phone call did it: the BF hung up and said, "We are NOT voting for Michael Brown."
(Not sure if we ever were, but there you go.)
I've gotten four of the Michael Brown robocalls. One was to my cellphone.
It's a really annoying campaign tactic and at this rate is probably doing more harm than good.
Funny, though, I'm betting he's all for the Do Not Call lists....
The rain soaked this damn flier onto my windshield, where it dried onto the glass. As I chiseled it off this morning, I prayed Brown will go down. Oh lord, how I prayed.
And the flyers say Brown is an "Independent-Democrat," (wink-wink) making a mockery of the DC Charter provisions on at-large council seats.
If it really bothers you so much, find out where he parks his car, and drop a "Michael A. Brown" on the hood.
Cleveland Park Metro area got hit with these fliers a few weeks ago. I still haven't gotten any robocalls. But the number of robocalls I do get from him will be half the number of times I junkpunch him for being a tool.
It is too bad that politicians continue to exempt themselves from Do Not Call law.
StopPoliticalCalls.org is fighting for the privacy of the American voter.
1 - Creating a Political Do Not Call Registry
2 - Testifying in the US Senate about robo calls (Sen. Feinstein’s Robocall Privacy Act)
3 - Forcing states to enforce existing robo call laws (CA, MN, NJ, etc..)
4 - Getting politicians to take a do not robo call pledge (7 have)
As I testified at the US. Senate these robo calls are an epidemic and this election cycle “phone spam” and are invading the privacy of All American Voters.
Our members are taking a stand and saying enough is enough at the National Political Do Not Contact Registry at StopPoliticalCalls.org.
Here is a quote from a member recently:
"I'm a shift worker, working variable shifts. I depend on my sleep to be able to do my job safely and efficiently. I'm a locomotive engineer. Imagine the disaster were I to fall asleep, operating a freight train carrying hazardous materials in your neighborhood, due to fatigue from being awoken in my middle of the night on a continuous basis during election season. Please stop.."

his people have plastered bloomingdale at least twice in the last few weeks.
screw the guy. he's running for office to get into office, nothing more. i don't care if he's a "nice guy", he clearly just feels this burning need to hold public office. i mean, the guy has run for everything possible in this city....and has lost them all. i am definitely not voting for him.
Between the flyers that turn to litter and the robo-calls, I will vote for anyone BUT michael brown
Michael Brown dropped THREE 8 1/2 x 11" glossy flyers on every doorstep as far as the eye could see in Columbia Heights. Didn't just put them through the doorslot or some reasonably secure place (which at least the chinese restaurants usually do), but simply dropped them on the step, right by the sidewalk.
Guess what the sidewalks looked like about 6 hours of wind later?
He should be fined extensively for littering.
