Organic Supermarket Signs Columbia Heights Deal

Ellwood ThompsonsAfter a few false starts, it's finally official — we just received a press release from Ellwood Thompson's CEO Ryan Youngman, who said a deal was signed at about 2 p.m. today for a location in the DC USA shopping center.

The release says the supermarket, which has one branch in Richmond, will open on Irving Street NW in Columbia Heights in fall or winter of 2009. The store will focus on products found within a 100-mile radius, and will also have prepared foods and organic, vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, and raw offerings. Spokesperson Lesley Johnson told us they plan to pursue a license to sell beer and wine as well.

The release also says the store will try to emphasize conservation with "monetary envirocredits" for people who don't drive to the store or who reuse bags and containers. Interesting. The full press release is here.

We look forward the store and hope it reduces the ridiculous lines at the Giant on Park Road. Any other opinions, or some words from people familiar with the Richmond store?

So can I get "monetary envirocredits" if I eschew a grocery bag completely and just eat my free-range cruelty-free tofu-intolerant no-fu pups on the stoop? How about recycling my urine? Because, you know, it's sterile. That's right. You can drink it.

The only way to reduce the ridiculous lines at the Columbia Heights Giant is to hire some cashiers who actually give a shit. That store employs some of the biggest assholes in all of DC.

The first person who asks "Will there be a Whole Foods too?" gets dickpunched.

Well when the hell is the Yes! opening on 14th and V? They've had signs up for almost a year.

Will there be a Trader Joe's too?

Just kidding.

But seriously, there is going to be a serious need for more traffic control up there soon

fukcin hippies. BESTWAY 4 EVR.

just a hunch, but I don't think that the lines at Giant will really be reduced. I'd imagine that the prices at the super-dupper organic store will be pretty high and most folks with regular sized paychecks will still be shopping at Giant.

"monetary envirocredits"?

Will these be in the form of actual money or Hippie Fun-Bux that are only redeemable for smiles, mellow karma, and patchouli stench?

Dudes. Just you wait. Ellwood Thompson's is the bomb. Don't believe me? Just pedal your hydro-solar whoopty chopter down to Richmond for an extra taste. It's the bomb, digity.

Can't open soon enough. If "hippy" equals "tastes good" then I'm friggin' the whole cast of Hair....
wait, that totally made no sense, what can I say?! I'm outta my mind for anticipation!

Tough crowd! I personally am thrilled to have a convenient way to support local (100 mile radius) food producers. I'd rather give my money to them than to agri-business. And as the astute Disco Stu notes, this isn't just about politics, it's about taste - food that hasn't been freeze-dried to travel 3,000 miles just tastes better.

As long as they're prepared to sell Powerball tickets and bottles of Thunderbird they'll do fine

While some less affluent residents get priced out of organic markets, I would argue they just aren't realizing the full potential of a $4 cucumber. Its not 'just for salad' kids.

By the time they open, the world’s financial system will be in full collapse, so will they take beaver pelts, beads or indentured servitude along with those "monetary envirocredits",

Yes, it's time to stop pretending that the Heights is still a transitional neighborhood. When organic groceries and a Best Buy share the same real estate- it is a brave new world.

I for one could not be happier, since after all I am a 5th degree black belt eco-yuppie who wears a vintage monocle, hand knitted pants, and I carry everything in reusable bags, even things that don't need to be carried- it's all true.

So when is Trader Giotto Whole Foods coming?

I just had some very naughty thoughts concerning the other uses for a $4 cucumber. I've rocked my own world with freeze-dried cuke that traveled 3,000 miles, so I can only imagine what a fresh 100-mile-radius one feels like! Oh man, I'm gonna dump my boyfriend as soon as this place opens up.

Also, does Ellwood resemble Elle">http://dailytarheelfashion.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/reese.jpeg>Elle Woods?

"time to stop pretending that the Heights is still a transitional neighborhood"

Ha ha ha. I have two kids shot in the ass a couple of blocks down and several section 8 housing buildings that say otherwise. FAIRCLIFF PLAZA and TRINITY TOWERS, BITCHES!

BTW, how is it that in a previous post CM Grahamstander said the lease was signed a couple of days ago, but in this post the CEO of the place says that the lease was signed today at 2 p.m. what gives?!

ellwood thompson in richmond is teeny tiny. i am surprised they have enough $$$ to expand to such a prominent location more than 2 hours away, to be honest.

adamsmorgan - I think Graham was a bit premature - after the City Paper and I posted it the other day, er got emails from the Ellwood's CEO saying that it wasn't a done deal yet.

Lines at the Tivoli giant are going to be even longer once the P street giant closes. The people working in CH are friggin sugary sweet compared to the attitudes on 9th...only the employees at the RI Home Depot can make these folks seem like they are doing a good job.

or another way to think about it, My shopping at either stores typically break out like this (and this includes going up and down every aisle and having a full buggy)

14th Street Giant: avg 45 minutes to shop and check out, even if all lanes have long crazy lines

9th Street Giant: avg 1hr 30 to shop and check out with long lines.

buggy? I'm not from the south! Sorry bout that. I meant to say cart.

The P Street Giant is such an unpleasant place. I was there yesterday evening in the "express" line, which was held up because the guy in front of me was lending his EBT card to his friend who was in the other "express" line. And then after I paid, getting from the checkout to the exit took forever because the friend who had no money decided that he couldn't wait to eat his carryout prepared food, so he just stood right there in the way, dropping his plastic fork wrapper and other trashall over the place.

God I love to hate that store.

Wrong neighborhood for that store. Try further south and a little to the west.

OK, I'm really excited, if for no other reason than I never have to go into that Giant again. They're rude, the lines take forever and the last time I was there, I slipped and fell in an unmarked random pool of water. Not fun. (But not seriously injured enough to sue... dammit)

dudes. you still don't get it. but you will

Ellwoods is all about being responsible and that includes being affordable. Sales. Plus, education about what's really healthy. On top of all that, Really Good Tasting Food.

Never complain about a grocery store in DC again after Ellwoods. CH is now living the good life.

As a Richmond native, it seems odd to me that an Ellwood Thompson is not, in fact, located at the intersection of Ellwood and Thompson, but I'll definitely make the trek and check it out. I find it interesting that they are expanding, I wonder if they'll continue if this is successful...

dcguy20001: if you're a regular shopper at the o street giant, you need to make your way down to the safeway in mt. vernon triangle. it's the most convenient replacement.

Beaver pelts and vintage monocles?!? I've just died of dysentery and gone to heaven!

Dude, you need to get out more. Mount Pleasant is just teeming with well-heeled hippies, granolas and tree huggers. And that comprises their target demographic to a tee.
