boondoggle & run for the hills:

It was not ironic because he was 1 of 55 million McCain supporters, it was ironic because he was certainly the only McCain supporter inside Ben's @ the moment Obama was declared the winner (indeed was probably 1 of only a handful within a square mile of Ben's) & it happened to be his 1st visit to the joint.

To ellabellalee:

There was a similar mixture of fireworks and shots in the air in SE. So many people outside. Cars honking. Metro buses honking. It felt like back when the Skins won in '88.

I hear that Kenya declared a national holiday Thursday in honor of this. (This being Barack... not our celebration in the streets).

boondoggle

It was a Brightest Young Things party, he had to do something ironic every half-hour or risk losing status.

I live in Adams Morgan and right after they called it for Obama we could hear yelling outside, so we went around the corner and people were piling onto 18th St. At first they were just gathered on either side of the street, but eventually a taxi and a bus got stuck in the middle of a huge crowd of people. A patrol car drove through but people just closed up again behind it.

Eventually four buses had to literally back up toward Columbia Rd and turn around. The cops kept trying to keep a traffic lane clear, but eventually gave in and closed off the street with no fewer than 8 patrol cars at 18th and Columbia.

Everyone was in such good spirits, it was an amazing sight! I've never high fived so many strangers, even at a Redskins game!

For all concerned, pasta was also available for the chili (I prefer shells to cut down on slurpy mess). The blue cornmeal was courtesy of War Eagle Mill outside of Rogers, AR.

i was especially fond of the gunshot and fireworks in my neighborhood of trinidad. we were all out on our porches yelling and dancing and playing in the streets and dodging bullets. i was surprised that there were NO police there last night because they are usually around all the time! fun fun.

...and was eating a half smoke at Ben's Chili Bowl (with a McCain supporter, ironically)...

How this ironic? Or even worth noting? 55 million people voted for the guy, is it that big a deal that you actually talked to one of them?

Best cheer of the night, in front of the White House, somewhere around 2.30am - thousands of people chanting "Move, Bush, Get out the way. Get out the way, Bush, Get out the way." Brilliant.

We watched the returns come in with some friends, and then headed home not long after Obama was projected to be the winner. It was a bit surreal driving through Columbia Heights with the windows down and McCain's concession speech on the radio, while honking the horn and joining in the cheering on either side of us.

I was in the crowds celebrating on U St. and a bit later in the night I saw a man get hit by a car. I mean - he was HIT. He flew several feet into the air, slamming down on her hood before landing on his feet. The driver stopped in shock, looking horrified that she had seriously HIT this guy [totally her fault]. When the guy who had luckily landed on his feet realized what had happened, he paused, and then screamed "OBAAAAAAAAAMMMMAAAAAAAA!" and then he skipped away. CRAZINESS!

P.S. Yes, amazing that Hamilton Co. went blue.

After enjoying Cincinnati Chili with blue cornbread

Nice work Andrew - to my amazement, Obama won the Cincinnati area (Hamilton County). That is a rarity for a Democrat.
