Wow... what is wrong with most of you people? I only have a couple points but it seems that everyone is ignoring them:

1) This ain't Seattle. If they had public property with streams and woods that was less than 30 minutes away that could be used that would be great and I'm sure most dog owners would agree.

2) I have a pure white Samoyed and live across the street from the DP. It's not great but it saves me the 20 minute drive to Virginia to go to a dog park.

3) The main point is that I NEED a fenced dog park. Not all dogs, regardless of training, are capable of being let off leash it a busy city. My breed of dog in particular would have no problem running several miles away. I RELY on those fences to make sure she can have fun in an open enviroment but not put her at any risk of harm. To say it is ugly misses the entire point.

4) No one is prioritizing dogs. I believe there are plenty of places for people to hang out and run around. It is ridiculous that this is the one and only fenced dog park in DC. That space was not really being used anyways and there is a skate park nearby for PEOPLE. I don't think it is that unreasonable for a dog owner to want a place to excercise their dog in a safe place without harassing people that aren't interested in dogs. That's exactly what this dog park is. Would you rather they run unleashed around the mall bothering people instead?

5) Walking a dog and letting it run free are not the same at all. If you think walking a dog is better than letting it run free to play then you must not own dogs. My dog may love a nice walk through the woods but nothing replaces her being able to run.

I want to ask the board or the people who helped to create this park, to review the NOT PERMITED rules, which one of them is not bringing more than 3 dogs at a time, there are a tons of dog walkers like me and we believe in walking dogs in packs so they can socialize, get playmates, increase the exercise through chasing each other and also we take advantage of the time if the dogs live in the save neighborhood, unless you are just a wanna be and cannot walk more than 2 or 3! but my claim is to the owners who have something against US who walk dogs and find reliable this dog park, who those that can't stand some one who communicate better with dogs that their own ppl./ who those ppl that are seriously selfish about someother individuals business that have to call the police to reinforce something that it is out of context. ppl that dont have a life, they just find a life going to a concrete dog park to say that they are part from a group of friends, what a losers, do you even know if that fulfill your dog needs? they just think that this is a dog heaven.
It is a public property and the park was made for dogs and i support those ones that wal kdogs i nthe woods, fosters, in federal property and that believe that dogs need more than a time during the happy hr. "I DO SCOOP, because that's ethic but i can't stand a loser who tries to kick out a dog walker of a public property, to that one that has a brown and white dog, apparently pitbull mix that looks like a midget and is mid 40, shove your rules up your ass and get a life loser because you are not the owner of the park. walks and hikes stimulate the behavioral instincts of the dogs in a natural environment. This experience does not occur at the dog park, doggie day care, or a routine walk around the block. so do your homework and be a care giver not just a trouble maker who snitch on the cops when someone brings 5 dog or 6.

I realize this is crazy talk, but I like to believe there's a happy medium between dying alone, and prioritizing dog needs over human needs (as ignoring leash laws and rampant dog park advocacy does).

The prevailing view seems to be that the whole world needs to adopt to their convenience.

And that goes double for people with crotchfruit.

But it goes triple for people who live and die alone.

I must of been missing out on all the blunts whenever I take my dog to the dog park. I'm disappointed that in this day and page, people don't like to share.

And at risk of insulting myself, let's just say that Rob Godspeed and IMGoph's comments are more indicative of who uses the park.

Could you be more of an asshat, DrLrRonHoover? Let's see how many racist and ignorant assumptions there are in your original comment: 1) this park is in Shaw, therefore all the dogs must be pittbulls 2) this dog park is in Shaw, therefore all the owners must be not only black, but also criminals (oh wait, for you, those two are probably synonymous) and 3) because of the first two, the dogs will necessarily be fighting dogs and the park is dangerous.

As a Shaw resident, I was thrilled to finally get a dog park. No, it is not perfect, mostly due to the surface material used, but is is freaking awesome. It is filled with a variety of dogs (purebreds down to mutts like my 2), of both the pitt and non-pitt variety, as well as diverse dog owners, none of whom seem to be tossing back the rap snacks or smoking blunts. I hope you and your dog stay in the woods, away from civilized company.

You must have a license for your cat! Look, it's a bleeding pet, innit? I've got a license for me pet dog Eric, and I've got a license for me pet cat Eric. I got 'em from the man in the cat detector van from the Ministry of Housinge. It was spelt like that on the van. I'm very observant! I never seen so many bleeding aerials. The man said that their equipment could pinpoint a purr at four hundred yards! And Eric, being such a happy cat, was a piece of cake.

Goph - that may be, but it still looks more like a prison than a dog park.

I'm not advocating fancy - lord knows DC doesn't have the scratch to spend on dog parks. I just don't see why DC can't simply designate certain times in existing parks as off-leash and dispense with this fenced-in nonsense. Have a cop there who will ticket the hell out of anyone who doesn't pick up after their dog if that's the issue but that's it. No muss, no fuss and everyone's happy.

drlronhoover: this park is temporary, that's why it isn't the fanciest thing in the world. the city is going to tear it up in a couple years when the middle school next door—(what the hell is its official name now? shaw-garnet-patterson? garnet-patterson-shaw?)—is torn down and rebuilt.

I honestly don't understand why we can't just have sensible leash laws and get rid of this whole dog-ghetto-cum-park nonsense. If someone's dog is off leash and bites someone, then he/she should have the full force of the law come down on them. If, like most dogs, s/he's friendly, well disposed towards people and obeys commands, who gives a shit if he's on a leash or not?

fight the power

alexalexalex - I most DEFINITELY scoop! Even when he goes in the woods. It's the decent thing to do - as opposed to throwing your dog into a "thug jug" like this "dog park"

Honestly, I have seen some nice dog parks (Seattle) with multiple acres of woods, streams and meadows for off leash dogs. This ranks pretty low, but at least it is something.
