City in Zorning: Hapless O + Healthy 9 = Huge W for Big D

2008_1117_skins.jpgAfter braving the bone-chilling wind and cold, ridiculously long lines for the bathroom and obnoxious Cowboys fans for five plus hours, Redskins fans could only hope to be rewarded with a big win against their hated rival. Instead, fans left blustery FedEx Field using their complimentary “Rally Rags” (the pathetically transparent response to the Terrible Towel invasion of two weeks ago) to wipe away tears of frustration.

The game started deceivingly well for both the Redskins offensive and defensive units. Clinton Portis made a surprise start (and made a convincing case to take over as the team Flag Bearer) and new acquisition and sometime head-case Deangelo Hall made his debut with an early interception. After the defense shut down Dallas on its opening drive, the Redskins first offensive possession was impressive. Moving the ball with precision, the drive ended with a touchdown pass from Jason Campbell to Mike Sellers.

But that was just about all the fireworks the Redskins offense had on this cold night in Raljon. Possession after possession, the Redskins struggled to get out of their own way and laid an egg in the second half. While the defense remained stout most of the game, the wear and tear of the cold, time on the field and a bruising Marion Barber finally caused a fourth quarter collapse.

Two fourth downs in the final quarter told the story of this game, and of the current state of this team. Faced with a fourth and four—and needing a touchdown to go ahead, Campbell tried to find Santana Moss. Terrence Newman batted the ball away, but even if Moss had caught the ball, he would have been well short of the first down. So the question remains: Why run a two yard route when you need four yards for a first down? Puzzling…as was the play calling all night. Minutes later, faced with a fourth and one with just 1:08 remaining, Dallas decided to go for it to seal the win. A simple pitch out was to Marion Barber was all that was needed, and the tired Redskins defense caught up two yards too late. Game over.

Fans who trekked out to FedEx field headed to their cars mumbling and cursing their team, marveling at how such simple mistakes can add up to such a painful defeat. Adding salt to the wounds, the Dallas win gives the Cowboys an improved record of 6-4, tied with the Redskins and a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles. Now none of the three teams has any chance to catch the surging New York Giants (9-1), leaving all three to fight for wild-card position.

If you have watched the Redskins these past few weeks, you know that the mere mention of playoffs is premature. More than anything, this team just needs a win. A trip to Seattle could be just what the doctor ordered.

There is no Raljon. It ceased to exist once Synder bought the Redskins. Thank goodness.

It will always be Raljon to me!

i am surprised that snyder didn't change the team colors to black and gold when he introduced the rally rags. what a tool. he is just a little shrimp trying to be a big scallop.

zornucopia should have punted deep on 4th rather then going for it. lean on the D - they are the only ones who showed up yesterday. offense looked like limp scallops rotting in the sun. now it has to be wild card or bust for the skins faithful, cause Giants got this division locked up.

I got a case of the mondays, oh brother. A pathetic showing by the skins and an even more pathetic showing by the skins faithfull with their terrible towels, next week we will have a dog pound or we will throw scallops on the field after a score...Cripes!
But lets not get our burgundy and gold cockles in a bunch, we are still in the mix and seattle is just what the doctor ordered, a town famous for its fish market is just what the Redscallops need to stay fresh.
GO SKINS!
