The Local Races: Change Also Came to D.C.

voting.jpgWhile we soak in Barack Obama's historic victory over Senator John McCain (who delivered a moving and honorable concession speech), we can't ignore the change that came to our own backyard. Few of the results caught any of us by surprise. We did, though, rid ourselves of a pesky ANC commissioner, though.

Yes, fellow District residents and ping-pong lovers alike, ANC 3F04 commissioner and ardent nightlife opponent Frank Winstead was handed a crushing defeat last night, losing his re-election bid with only 25 percent of the vote. As you may recall, earlier this year Winstead launched a crusade against Comet Ping Pong, the beloved pizza joint in Upper Northwest that set itself apart by having ping pong tables both inside and outside. Comet has survived, Winstead has not.

In the most hotly-contested race of the season, Michael A. Brown soundly defeated incumbent write-in candidate Carol Schwartz for an At-large seat on the D.C. Council (Kwame Brown was re-elected to the other At-large seat). It's a bitter farewell for Schwartz, who served four terms on the Council, and a reminder that no amount of Washington Post endorsements will help you in this town if you're running as a Republican. Patrick Mara's loss notwithstanding, the District's political class are already whispering about him as a replacement for Council member David Catania (I-At Large), who may retire at the end of his current term. As for Michael A. Brown, our congratulations go out to him. It took three tries, lots of money and the eventual endorsement of the city's second-most powerful politician (that would be Council Chair Vincent Gray), but you're finally an elected public servant.

In other races, Marion Barry proved that old age will get him before he's ever voted out of office -- he cleaned up in Ward 8 with 91 percent of the vote. In Ward 2, Jack Evans will keep his seat, as will Ward 4's Muriel Bowser and Ward 7's Yvette Alexander. D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton easily defeated her challengers, while embattled Shadow Senator Paul Strauss won himself another six years of zero pay and few of the privileges of higher office. Mike Panetta won another term as Shadow Representative, and as the second-highest vote-getter in citywide races, is now one of the most popular and powerful guys you may never have heard of.

Maybe the biggest story of the night is that after a troubled primary, the District's electoral machinery didn't collapse under the weight of the almost 230,000 votes cast. The D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics surely took its time reporting any results, but so far there appears to be no controversy over their accuracy.

I'm getting a conflicting message in this election:

Lesson learned from the ANC3F04 race: don't be an a$$hole.

Lesson learned from the Ward 8 race: unless you're Marion Barry.

Really interested in seeing what Ward 8 does once Barry decides to stop running. Who am I kidding? He'll come back from the dead JUST LIKE JESUS and he'll KEEP gettin re-elected, even though Zombie Barry continues to suck the brains of infants through their eyesockets to feed his unnatural lust for sweet, delicious baby's brains.

Good riddance to Frank Winstead, but in case you missed it, a similar character was elected ANC representative for the central Columbia Heights area: William Jordan.

Yes, that William Jordan, famous for spamming blogs, listservs and message boards with conspiracy theories, anti-Jim Graham and anti-development rants. Taking away a harmless ping-pong table or objecting to benches are right up his alley. Too bad he ran unopposed.

Ha! Thanks for the compliment, but I'm no more powerful or popular than I was last week :)

Seriously, I was awesome being a part of yesterday and I am truly humbled by the sheer number of people who voted! It's a new day in DC and America!

at least some of us have heard of mike panetta! congratuations to you, sir.

in other news, it looks like the gridlock of the past has finally been lifted in the shaw ANC.

Whoops. that should say "it was awesome" - not "I am awesome"...unless you think I am.

It's common to find criticism for something poorly done but rare for applause to acknowledge a job well done. Thus I second Martin's congratulations to the Board of Elections for handling what must have been record-breaking turnout this year.

DCBOEE's website reports zero absentee ballots and zero provisional ballots. Is this true?

No, because I voted absentee in person, before election day. What gives?

Ah, William Jordan. From the Lawrence Guyot school of racebaiting tinfoilhat-ism. Looking forward to him blaming pingpong tables for gentrification, water fluoridation, and his fallen arches. It all comes down to them Chinese peoples. They invented pingpong. They buy up all the liquor stores and REFUSE to hire the neighborhood alcoholics and thugs to sell Rap Snacks. Now I'm no racialist, but their chicken wings and mambo sauce ARE KILLING OUR YOUNG PEOPLE. No wonder they can't keep their pants up: they need poopy pants because they're so fat from the Chinese food! And then their dry cleaners lose the pants. You need to REALIZE that Jim Graham and the Chinese homoesexuals are in league to fill our young people's poopy pants with mambo sauce!

Brotha knows how to RANT, I'll give him that much.

TheCounter - Special Ballot information will be available by next Wednesday. Perhaps absentee is the same.

Too bad Michael Brown won. And Paul Strauss.

Gawd. I can't believe William Jordan is now an ANC commissioner. That means the ANC meetings will be four hours long as he filibusters every motion that is put forward by the sometimes sensible, generally non-racist, consipiracist members of the ANC.

Well, anyway, sometimes having a total lunatic on the ANC (like Frank Winstead) is what's needed to get someone else to step up. I'm sure he will be a one-termer.

I've been not reading his completely unintelligible diatribes for years now. The idea of this guy actually having the right to make other people listen to him (whereas we used to just be able to click "delete") is scary.

If the ANC guy is a loon, wait a few months and then try to recall him.

Does DC ever clean out their voter rolls? Only 53.44% of registered voters in DC, voted yesterday? I have my doubts.

Hee hee, Monkeyrotica, that is not far from the truth!

Thanks, TheTim. You know, I think you and I are close enough at this point that we can drop the definite articles. You can call me just Counter, if I may call you Tim.

Congratulations to Michael Brown on his election victory.

I can't wait to receive the weekly robo-call from his DC Council office.
