Virginia state GOP Chair Jeff Frederick |
After losing its two seats in the U.S. Senate, the governor's office and even a House seat in a conservative-leaning district, you'd think the Virginia GOP would want to watch its words, re-think its electoral strategy and consider new leadership. Apparently, it's not doing any of the above.
Via the Post's Virginia Politics blog, we find that state GOP Chair Jeff Frederick — you might remember him for equating Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden — recently sent out a fundraising request in which he tries to scare Virginia Republicans into throwing money at their sinking ship of a party by warning of an impending "radical shift" in U.S. politics. Writes the Post:
Frederick then goes on to accuse Obama of wanting "massive new taxes and generous giveaways to his supporters," a 25 percent cut in the military budget, to divert the bailout money to ACORN, extend "welfare for millions who already pay no taxes," and give "welfare and drivers licenses for illegal aliens - with voting rights soon to follow."As fear-mongering goes, we suppose bringing up illegal aliens, a huge welfare state and increased taxes are effective pitches for Republicans. But Senator Marion Barry? Is that what "real" Virginia has to be afraid of?In another inflammatory barb, Frederick says Obama will push for voting rights for the District of Columbia and council member Marion Barry will become a United States senator.
Memo to the Virginia GOP: the fact that you've lost major races in the last eight years to Democrats means that it might be time to re-tool the party strategy and message. And maybe dump Jeff Frederick...

and let's be honest here, this is clearly meant to say to the racists in "real" virginia, "oh noes! there will be more darkies in the halls of power if we don't stop the democrat party now!"
Watching the GOP circle the toilet (especially in VA) has been quite enjoyable. The tyranny is over... for now...
Yeah... maybe. Consider that the successful Virginia Dems would look a great deal like Repubs in the Northeast. Sure I'm an R-leaning indy who *did* vote for Obama, but bear in mind that Warner received a "pass" with the NRA and Jim Webb is hard charging to the center. Jeff Frederick should, however, take careful note of the illuminated exit signs located at both the left and right side of the theater.
no. i say let this d- bag stay and lead his party. he's like bob dornan was -- an embarassment to the GOP, who will do more harm than good to it's evil, racist membership....
"The tyranny is over" - "evil, racist membership" - "racists in 'real' virginia'"
I am a moderate R in Virginia who didn't vote for Obama. While this is a dead argument for now, I think you can fairly vote against him without being a racist if you're concerned about his lack of experience and his dramatic move to the middle during the general election (versus his positions in the primary). It's comments like the above which illustrate the real intolerance at work here. People who don't subscribe to a very liberal agenda are deemed racists, tyrants, and fear mongers. I agree that the GOP leadership needs to moderate, but as long as the people who offer its members "advice" do so with backhanded language and seething disdain it's never going to happen.
So, DCist - either drop pretenses and admit that you're never going to like republicans unless they vote democratic or try to actually approach these issues with an open mind.
No Refill,
Keep in mind that DCist is a BLOG! It is supposed to be biased and partisan. If you need something that is more of a political bent to what you prefer, there is always the Drudge Report.
What a wiener...laugh the GOP off the stage.
It's time for the Virginia GOP show Frederick where the door is. Regardless of his inflammatory remarks, the GOP is steadily going down the drain in VA on his watch.
I don't think that it would really chap DCists' ass if they at least kept blatant editorializing to a minimum unless the story is an op-ed.
There never was a pretense. There was an assumption by you.
And actually, your quotes are from the comments, not from the piece.. so there's another error.
no refill: i have nothing against republicans, per se. but i do have a lot against this guy profiled here, you you almost have to admit is trying to race bait. you actually think he brought up the spectre of senator marion barry just for shits and giggles. hell no!
I heard this guy on Kojo Knamdi once. He's clearly off his rocker. It's sad that so many Republicans have really gone off the deep end. I think its going to take awhile until they eventually figure out that appealing to 7% of the population isn't going to make them a majority party again for awhile.
Frederick then goes on to accuse Obama of wanting "massive new taxes and generous giveaways to his supporters," a 25 percent cut in the military budget, to divert the bailout money to ACORN, extend "welfare for millions who already pay no taxes," and give "welfare and drivers licenses for illegal aliens - with voting rights soon to follow."
More shit-whistles like this for GOP leadership, please. It's the only hope the GOP has to consolidate its hold on the votes of "old white people living in Appalachia, the Ozarks, and the barren windswept areas of the Louisiana Purchase."
Surely a recipe for the Permanent Republican Majority.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party will inevitably become a regional party, isolated to "the northeast, the Middle Atlantic, the Great Lakes and upper midwest, the mountain southwest, and the Pacific states."
