Forget acquiring free agents – the Washington Nationals need a stylist. The team unveiled the good, the bad, and the ugly with their new uniforms for the 2009 season yesterday.
The away jersey and the white home jersey are perfectly nice (the white home jersey has minimal changes from last year) and should keep the team looking respectable for the majority of the season.
The Nats' new “alternate home jerseys,” however, which will be worn on special occasion game days like the 4th of July, need to stay in the clubhouse. People often joke that baseball uniforms look like pajamas. But whoever designed the Nats’ alternate home jerseys took the joke seriously. The first one is red and sports the curly “W;” the second, nicknamed the “patriot jersey,” features the letters D.C., in stars and stripes fabric, on a navy background. There’s also a new hat with the same pattern and color scheme. If this sounds remotely appealing, the pictures will have you thinking otherwise.
Fortunately, the Nationals’ public relations department has more foresight than their design team – they decided to have four ladies model the new designs along with Lastings Milledge and Manny Acta. Smooth.

Hellooooooooooo Miss Alternate-Home-Red-Jersey
Jerseys don't look so bad, but that's the most boring/trashy group of models I've ever seen.
why can't we tear down that stadium, send the last-place team packing, and bring back the SE strip clubs?
I kind of like the patriot jersey. :(
Bringing in the cursive "Washington" for the away jerseys is finally the right step. They should have done the same for the home jerseys. That blocky font simply is too incongruous with the curly W. Since the curly W is more popular (and more historical) I don't see why they don't go all the way and drop the awkward blocky font for the home jerseys as well.
I think Isis looks very nice in the patriot jersey, but it's a step down from modeling for Tyra.
since they're already halfway to pajamas, why not sell actual pajamas to fans, since they will be sleeping through most of the game anyways...
the patriotic mistake they're passing off as a jersey reminds me of the horrible men's national soccer jersey from 1994.
seriously. the only people that should be allowed to be on a playing field while wearing a flag are streakers.
I'd give up being afflicted with The Gay briefly for some quality time with the 'patriot jersey' girl.
Maybe the uniforms wouldn't look so bad if they were modeled on actual baseball players instead of "models." What's up with that?!
I'm with Reid. The away jerseys are a vast improvement, and the home jerseys should go the same direction - ie, away from the block letters.
I do like the "DC" logo on the alternate red jersey, but the Patriot version gives me a headache.
I like the stars and stripes DC. i don't much care for the cut of the jersey, though. or the patch on the sleeve. Oh well.
i always thought, from the beginning, that there was something wrong with having two fonts on the uniforms that clashed as much as the block and the cursive do.
doesn't manny acta look a little bored in that last picture? no, wait, a lot bored!
Yeah, why didn't they use actual Nationals players to debut the uniforms? Oh, right, no one would have come to see Nationals players...

Those two alternate jerseys definitely look like women's softball uniforms.
agreed, HCE. what's with the weird priest-like lines around the shoulders and down the fronts of the alternate jerseys? it looks ok on the women, but for the guy's versions of the jerseys it seems a little odd. maybe they're invoking all the religious symbolism they can think of, hoping for divine intervention and some wins. or a win.
Give me back my DC logo.
Even more than the block letters on the home jersey, I've always hated the gold highlights in the lettering (in the "DC" cap too). So if the script writing gets rid of both, I say let's put it on everything!
Paul Lukas over at UniWatch also breaks down the new jerseys. He's not really happy with any of it.
Why are those gals wearing those red and blue smocks? Are they about to get a shampoo at the beauty parlor?
I like the script Washington jersey - I can't wait til they put it on a t-shirt. I don't like that blocky font.
I didn't know the Nationals were mostly women!
Or maybe men should be the ones modeling the uniforms. Turns out that men and women have different shaped bodies...
The Nationals could use a stylist? This coming from a city that has no fashion sense or style? Kinda ironic, dontcha think?
I probably have been to more Nats games than all of those commenting here combined. The funny thing? I live in Miami.
P.S. I happen to like both the patriotic jersey and the idea of wearing one for the 4th of July and other patriotic holidays in the nation's capital. And it's nowhere near the atrocity of that soccer uniform someone posted.
