The Nationals Could Also Use a Stylist

Forget acquiring free agents – the Washington Nationals need a stylist. The team unveiled the good, the bad, and the ugly with their new uniforms for the 2009 season yesterday.

The away jersey and the white home jersey are perfectly nice (the white home jersey has minimal changes from last year) and should keep the team looking respectable for the majority of the season.

The Nats' new “alternate home jerseys,” however, which will be worn on special occasion game days like the 4th of July, need to stay in the clubhouse. People often joke that baseball uniforms look like pajamas. But whoever designed the Nats’ alternate home jerseys took the joke seriously. The first one is red and sports the curly “W;” the second, nicknamed the “patriot jersey,” features the letters D.C., in stars and stripes fabric, on a navy background. There’s also a new hat with the same pattern and color scheme. If this sounds remotely appealing, the pictures will have you thinking otherwise.

Fortunately, the Nationals’ public relations department has more foresight than their design team – they decided to have four ladies model the new designs along with Lastings Milledge and Manny Acta. Smooth.
