Temper This: Repeal Day Events

2008_1202_repealday.jpgThis week as you enjoy your poison of choice at your favorite watering hole, raise your glass to the 75th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition. This Friday, December 5, celebrates the end of 13 years of mandated teetotaling. And it has become increasingly apparent that the products of artisanal distilling and brewing that were squelched by the introduction of Prohibition are starting to make a return. Liquors that have not seen these shores in years - genever gin, sloe gin, and absinthe - are making their way into stores or being produced domestically.

So seize the day and try out something new. Or you can stop by one of the events/specials being held around the city. A handful of our picks are below the jump.

R.F.D.
R.F.D. is hosting a party on the evening of December 5, and will be selling Iron City for $2.50 a can - one of the few breweries to survive Prohibition.

Repeal Day Ball
The City Tavern Club is the site of a Repeal Day Ball. Try out classic cocktails, which will include the new-to-this-market Dolfin vermouth amongst other unique drinks. There are still a few tickets left at $90 a person.

PS 7’s
PS 7’s has $7 classics from 5-7 p.m. Get the Sazerac, which is finally being made with absinthe instead of Herbsainte.

Lotus
All you can drink 8-11 p.m. for $20. 'Nuff said.

Fireflies
1933 prices with 2008 economic conditions. Sounds like a great deal to me. $1.19 PBRs, $3.33 rum runners, $19.33 microbrew buckets and bottles of wine are available all night from 8-10 p.m.

How is it all night if it's from 8-10?

Who's selling jenever?

Don't forget the comeback of Rye!!

I'll drink to that...hic!

While you celebrate the repeal with alcohol, I'll stick to the sweet, sweet formaldehyde that law-abiding people drank during the Prohibition Era.

Why can't they repeal the ban on Marijuana too? After all, it wasn't health or safety concerns that led to its criminalization, but racism, fear, distorted and sensationalized journalism, protection of corporate profits, ignorance, corruption, and greed. With our government giving trillions of dollars to banks and car manufacturers who can't run a business, why can't they also legalize or decriminalize weed, tax it, and watch the billions stream back in?

Humboldt, CA is the town that can save our economy.

Because my girlfriend is awesome (and because we likes us some fancy cocktails) she got us tickets for the DC Craft Bartenders Guild Repeal Day Ball as my birthday present. We are very much looking forward to it.

Looks like the DC council had their own Repeal Day event. They approved Jim Graham's bill to allow drinking until 5 a.m. during inauguration week.
