When our pals at Chicagoist forwarded us a link to their post about how the U.S. Supreme Court is actually going to consider whether to take up a lawsuit challenging President-Elect Barack Obama's U.S. citizenship, we thought it had to be a joke. But no, this is sort of really happening tomorrow, and although it's almost assured of going no further than merely appearing on Friday's court meeting schedule, it will bring with it a small army of weirdos who are still pushing this sad little conspiracy theory. There's a vigil planned for the steps of the Supreme Court tomorrow, so if you're looking to get an extra helping of crazy before the start of your weekend, stroll on by!

You got it right the second time. The petition was distributed at conference but that could be said of untold numbers of petitions that are also denied without comment. Sorry, crazies!

Damn! And to think that I just put my pitchfork and torch into storage until next election too!

Oh lord, another proud moment for Alan Keyes and Justice Thomas.

And McCain was the one who truly was born in Panama! (Although it was the Canal Zone, which was technically US Territory.)
But with all their claims of terrorist-pallin', radical reverendry, redistributionistics, joes the plumber, bulldog cosmetologists, real/fake Americanism, and other cheap political ploys during the campaign, wouldn't it have been obvious to the GOP to fully investigate Obama's citizenship and birth records? Of course it was, and it's a non-issue -- not only to the reasonable but even to the partisan hacks as well. The only people who would still buy into this birth certificate doubting crap have clearly just been returned from their purported abductions by UFO, and are too traumatized by anal probing by illegal alien aliens to think rationally. These conspiracy theories--as well as the people who buy into them--simply lack teeth.
[ report this ]
I'm pretty sure it's not teeth they lack.

You said it. I don't know why they're pressing the point so hard when Prez-Elect's birth certificate is so readily available for the public to verify.
Oh, it's not?
Oh. Well then.
Maybe this would all go away if the President Elect would just consent to reporters having a look-see. As it is, he's just engaging in the kind of obstruction that he criticized the Bush administration for. I always agreed that there should be more transparency in government. Lead by example?
[ report this ]
As it is, he's just engaging in the kind of obstruction that he criticized the Bush administration for.
When you hold up a hoop, and demand that someone jump through it even though they are not in any way required to do so, it does not mean that they are "engaging in obstruction" when they refuse to follow your commands.
The fact that you can equate Bush administration obfuscations that resulted in years of war and the torture of suspects in custody to Obama's "failure" to release multiple versions of his birth certificate just shows how out of whack your perspective on this issue is. The fact that no one has ever presented a shred of credible evidence that Obama was born anywhere but Hawaii just adds an extra level of absurdity to your whole complaint.
[ report this ]
Please correct me if I am wrong.
But, are not the children of American citizens automatically American citizens?
[ report this ]
Obama's "Certification of Live Birth" was indeed an official document, however it isn't an official "Certificate of Live Birth". The document the Obama campaign has circulated, regardless of arguments about its veracity, can be obtained by any Hawaiian parent who has a child born outside the country within the previous year. Also, Hawaiian officials in a very carefully worded statement did confirm they have Obama's official birth certificate on record although those officials never confirmed it states he was born in Hawaii, only that they are in possession of it. Strange. It would cost $14 to get a copy of it to end this question once and for all, yet Obama has spent upwards of $800,000 trying to prevent its release. Why not just release it?
[ report this ]
By the way, blittle, the answer to your question is yes. However, according to the Constitution, being just a "citizen" doesn't qualify for the Presidency.
[ report this ]
Right from the start of his campaign, Obama was very good about staying on topic and not getting defensive whenever the Right Wing Spin Machine would throw some wacky accusation his way. You justify the doubters be even addressing these "issues".

I get it. His mother was actually a jackal and his father an Ambassador. DAMIEN!! DAMIEN!! DAMIEN!!

Read about this & it came up earlier. However, in Islands of Hawaii, Anyone can bring Birth Certificate from any nation & recieve substitute birth certificate from Hawaii. Hawaii is very technical, yet obsessed with native origin, so long term peoples from elsewhere, often asia, use that to incorporate themselves more closely with local peoples.
In Hon Barack Obama Esq case, birth certificate was Fax'd to investigator, yet it was illegible. So public health unit of birth records checked & confirmed there is birth certificate, yet will NOT release details of that certificate to Anyone.
Worse, Hon Barack obama Esq grand Mother stated that Brack was born in Kenya & so do other direct relatives. I believe true mother is No longer available.
So its good case & probably true, yet how to break thru all that Haze.
Signed:PHYSICIAN THOMAS STEWART VON DRASHEK M.D.

It's true, there are plenty of Kenyans that very proudly proclaim that "of course" Obama was born there. Including some of his relatives. But I don't think anyone outside of Kenya has ever claimed that is true, even the conspiracy theorists usually pick Indonesia as his "real" place of birth.

James Orleans, when you say "being just a 'citizen' doesn't qualify you for the Presidency," I believe the phrasing for which you're searching is "No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President."
From what I can tell, the definition of "natural born Citizen" is debatable. There have been several presidential would-be nominees and candidates born to US parents outside of the US proper. For example, George Romney, who was born in Mexico and John McCain, who was born in the Panama Canal zone.
[ report this ]
Again, the birth origin issue wasn't even substantial enough for McCain to pick on...and he's the guy who blew the tire gauge shtick out of proportion.
There's just no concrete evidence that Obama isn't American-born. You can suggest some fantasy idea that he was born in Kenya or the USSR or Atlantis, but he doesn't have to play along and disprove every ridiculous, moldy claim. And he was vetted and contested so thoroughly during the primaries and general campaign that this issue is moot.

honest to christ, this is amazing. these people just can't believe that the american people would vote for a competent man of african heritage. unreal.

Well, Vaughan, releasing his origianl birth certificate would certainly answer question number one, place of birth. Question number two may well be further or redefined by the SCOTUS. Regardless, without the answer to question one, question two is irrelevant.
Anyway, once question one is answered, the public still needs to know how Mr. Obama traveled to Indonesia and Pakistan when the State Department has no record of a passport before he became a senator.
All these questions make me quite uncomfortable. Why has Mr. Obama evaded them by sealing all his records?

The Certification of Live Birth says unequivocally that Obama was born in Honolulu. This is silly.

Cactus Jack, a Certification of Live Birth isn't an official document. Anyone born within the past year to a Hawaiian, anywhere in the world, can get a Certification of Live Birth.
What everyone wants to see is the "Certificate of Live Birth" which would have the hospital, doctor, etc. information included.
A completely legitimate Certification of Live Birth proves nothing.
[ report this ]
James,
Can you please provide a cite to applicable law that the certification is not an official document? The Certification itself contains a legend which reads, "This copy serves as prima facie evidence of the fact of birth in any court proceeding." The Certification cites Hawaii Revised Statutes s 338-13(b) and 338-19, which seem to support the legend.

James,
You've suggested that an official HI birth certificate should contain additional information. Can you please provide a link to a picture of what an official HI birth certificate looks like? That would be very helpful as I'm having difficulty understanding where the deficiency is in Obama's birth certificate.

The fact that the record was acknowledged to exist but will not be disclosed is reason enough for people to get up and arms and start spinning conspiracy theories. The fact that it would be so easy to disprove the allegations, and yet it has not happened, creates the appearance of wrongdoing, whether true or not. And the burden of proof of citizenship is on him, not on everyone else to prove otherwise, as is suggested above by several commenters.
[ report this ]
The fact that you don't have to be born in Hawaii to be issued a Certification of Live Birth should be reason enough to require the actual Certificate of Live Birth. This is Constitutional law, certainly trumps Hawaii State law. Anyway, doesn't "prima facie" mean "at first view"? Doesn't it mean it is good enough evidence unless rebutted, which in this case it is?

"Worse, Hon Barack obama Esq grand Mother stated that Brack was born in Kenya"
That statement was made over a phone call with a rightwing wackjob. There were two interpreters on the line; the wackjob asked Grandma if she was "present" at his birth, and one of the interpreters said she was. The wackjob then asked if he was born in Kenya, and the interpreters and Grandma realized they had misunderstood the earlier question and told him unequivocally that Obama was born in Hawaii. The wackjob was recording the conversation, and chose to only release the first part of the tape. Because he's a fucking wackjob.

Before most of you leap on a "ship of fools" you might want to check into the details of what is actually going on here.
1. This is not simply a "b****" someone has about Barack Obama's citizenship HE VERY LIKELY IS.
2. The argument is "IS HE a "natural born citizen" ... if he is not then he does not qualify to be President of the United State.
If there are any of you here who consider yourselves REAL AMERICANS this should be of GREAT IMPORTANCE to you.
If not then it is clear by your comments just who are ignorant and who are fools.
How do you define "small group of weirdoes? Could it be a number of the uninformed FOOLS here?
