Blade: 11th and Q NW Shooting Victim Identified

The Washington Blade is reporting that the victim in the fatal overnight shooting at 11th and Q Streets NW has been identified as Durval Martins of the 200 block of Bates Street NW. Martins, a 35-year-old gay man, was shot in the head and killed shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday while walking home from Fox & Hounds, according to D.C. police. A police statement said Martins also suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body. Acting Lt. Brett Parson of the Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit said officers found the victim's wallet in his hand and that his cash, cell phone, and jewelry were not taken. Martins had reportedly been out in the Dupont area last night, having visited gay bar Omega and the 17th Street restaurant Jack’s before going to Fox & Hounds. Police have not pinpointed a motive in the killing, but said it could have been robbery given that the victim’s wallet was in his hand.

Ummm....could have been a robbery? How could it have been a robbery if his wallet, cash, jewelry, etc was STILL THERE?! I'm no detective, but common sense tells me that Martins assumed it was a robbery and was trying to give the wallet away, when in fact it was either a hate crime or a gang initiation murder. Even when a robbery "goes wrong" the assets are taken from the scene.

So, either it's a hate crime, a disgruntled boyfriend, or the crooks' IQs have dropped precipitously.

Gotta love DC's Finest. "Uh, there's a wallet and cash and cellphone and jewelry lying around that the crook didn't take, so it's a robbery."

DC cop cars should just broadcast Benny Hill music at crimescenes.

I'm confident the detectives will get this case wrapped up in the next 4-5 years. Maybe!

I don't necessarily agree that when a robbery "goes wrong" the assets are taken from the scene.

I believe it is entirely plausible that once the shots were fired and Martins was down the killer/attempted robber could have panicked and immediately fled the scene rather than risk being caught going though the pockets of a dead man.

Honestly though, the only person who knows the actual motive is the killer. Unless he is caught and explains his motive we may never know.

ATTENTION *** ATTENTION *** ATTENTION

ATTENTION ALL DC THUGS AND ANTI-GAY HOMOPHOBES: WHEN KILLING SOMEONE BECAUSE THEY'RE GAY... BE SURE TO TAKE SOMETHING FROM THEM IN ORDER TO AVOID HATE CRIME PENALTIES. MPD WILL NOT THINK TWICE THAT IT WAS ***JUST*** A COINCIDENTAL ROBBERY.

@nbdinz: nah, all you have to do is tell the police that the guy was, like, hitting on you, and they'll knock the charges down to involuntary manslaughter. U-S-A! U-S-A! [/sarcasm]

so the deceased was a bloomingdalian? was he walking from 17th and Q all the way back to bloomingdale? that's a heck of a hike, and i guess one that i usually wouldn't recommend at that hour, especially alone.

@IMGoph: Sounds like he was just crossing 11th and about to approach a stretch that I avoid after around 10PM or so, when I switch from using the Shaw-Howard metro stop to the U St. Cardozo one. Rhode Island Ave is pretty sketch at night around there - poorly lit, lots of muggings, etc.

Of course, I'm probably just as likely to get jumped walking home from U St. as I am walking home from Shaw/Howard, but at least the lighting is better...

And in the 7+ years I've lived in that 'hood, I don't think I've ever crossed over 11th by myself, on foot, after 3AM. Guess I'm not about to start.

Anyone know how many potential hate crimes have been perpetrated against homosexuals this year? Let's count this one until there's proof otherwise.

There have been 183 homicide victims this year, of which 2 are known to have been homosexual.

Wow. Very sad.

I was reading about the killing outside of BeBar, and it seems the charge was dropped to involuntary manslaughter after it was alleged that the accused was "resisting a sexual advance" by the victim. This is good news for women in DC who hate getting groped in and around bars, you can now kill the guy who groped you instead of throwing a drink in his face.

yeah, about the bebar killing -- the one who said it was a sexual advance? the killer and his friend. the guy who said that was ridiculous and explained the situation? the victim's friend who was also there. since when do we just take a killer's word for it? and even still, why is it okay to kill someone because you don't want them hitting on you?

and there have def been more than 2 murdered gay people this year. it's very difficult to track crimes like that though.

mpd is ridiculous. do they classify every crime where nothing has been taken as a robbery gone wrong?

Maybe they stole his Spongebob Squarepants skateboard.

I live right where this happened. The gunshots woke up most of the neighborhood and if they didn't, the police activity certainly did. The sirens were almost immediate after the gunshots, so a botched robbery is very possible, although initiation could be too. It was sad to watch all of the activity afterwards, knowing what had just happened. I hope they find the people who did this.

I knew the victim that was shot at 11th & Q last night very well, we call him "Dubai" at Jack's, where I work and Durval was a regular. He was at the bar last night all through dinner up until about 12:30 am. We were all supposed to meet up afterhours but we weren't able to reach him. I am convinced that he was pleading for his life and willing to give all his possessions to avoid any violence, THAT is why his wallet was in his hand. This was obviously an initiation into a gang, and even more possibly a true hate crime. I am floored and shocked, as we were laughing as I served him at my bar just hours before this unbelievable thing happened. He was adored by many many people, and didn't have a bad bone in his body. I will be at Jack's working tomorrow night if anyone who knew him would like to come by - we will be honoring his memory, and will have details as to his funeral services.

edthered: i know that walking from the shaw station is something that a lot of us in bloomingdale debate often. it's the closest metro station for a lot of us. i remember people being mugged near rhode island and 6th last winter.

the city has put new street lights up at the corners of 8th and RI, 5th and RI, and near RI and NJ. lighting is getting better there, but i know that the stretch between 8th and 11th (in front of shaw JHS) is dark and desolate. no activity on a long stretch there after dark, and bad lighting, makes it a potentially scary stretch.

funny thing is, i know a couple people who live right there (my girlfriend included), so i'm often there at night myself. i'm not about to stop walking around there, but i'll keep an extra eye open.

Just one more reason I'm moving out of Bloomingdale/Shaw/Eckington as fast as I can find another place to live. This place is the pits.

that one thing did it for you, jm67. i hope you can find a sufficiently shrink-wrapped bubble to live in.

with no sharp corners.

This is ridiculous. If any of you read the Blade, there have been NUMEROUS hate crimes this year -- more than I can remember in my short five year tenure in the city.

It's time to do something about it... take the streets back from the jerks who think it's OK to either a) shoot someone because they're gay or b) shoot someone because they need to feel like they belong. How is this right in either sense? Hate crime or no, how is this right?!

Who's ready to organize something?

Well IMGoph, if living in a crap neighborhood with predator teens makes you feel "real" then be my guest. I've done it for eight years and I've had my fill...

jm67: i said nothing about feeling "real". thanks for putting words in my mouth.

my point was that nowhere is perfect. if you had lived in georgetown a couple years ago when that guy had his throat slit, would you have said the same thing?

how about when the elderly couple got killed in their house in chevy chase last month?

it's tragic, but these things happen. this isn't beirut, circa 1984...

my point was that nowhere is perfect.

True. But some places are less perfect than others. And downtown is still far less stabby than, say, Anacostia.

I have lived in Eckington for 3 years now and I've already had my fill. I can't wait to leave, and by leave I mean to Moco. My tax dollars support these jerks, their children, and their baby mommas. I'm going someplace else that doesn't feel like Haiti.

So you're trading Haiti for El Salvador? Well, I suppose that's kind of an upgrade. Bon chance!

So, uh, are you going to change your user id to dc43years?

Sad. Thank you Erika for giving some details about the victim so they are more than a statistic.

IMGoph I agree it was a hike. Morbid curiousity made me plunk in the "walking directions" in Google Maps, however, and sure enough it leads you right by that intersection. Shoulds will now abound. He should have known, taken another route, taken a cab, etc. But those sad thoughts are just afterthefact.
Thanks, Erica for your details like Fluxgirl said.
Oh and as for action? Kung fu drag queens?

diskothek: I am with you to organize something.

He was my friend and NO ONE WILL MURDER A FRIEND OF MINE AND GET AWAY WITH IT.

I'd also like to start leaving flowers on that block. I invite others to do so!

Aside from the cause of his death, all of us who knew him would know he wouldn't want us to remember him for his death but for his love and generosity in life.. I truly loved him, my darling, my friend.

My condolences to all of those who knew Durval. He sounds like a great guy who really enjoyed life. I wish I'd met him.

I am concerned that this crime isn't getting the attention it deserves, particularly the hate crime aspect, which makes the most sense to me.

Although it's a quiet spot at 3am, it's the wrong spot for a mugging or gang-initiation killing (as I've seen speculated on other sites...heck, aren't gang-initiation killings just an urban myth?).

Where he was killed was the best-lit area for several blocks around : There are literally 6 or more street lights where Q St and Rhode Island cross 11th. In fact, he was about to walk into a stretch of Rhode Island that gets pretty dark and lonely.

Hopefully, MPD is doing some work behind the scenes to figure this one out.

I am absolutely down with trying to organize something. I have been a bartender in the city and in the nightlife industry for over 17 years, and those who are as well are all too familiar with being a target, due to the hours we keep. I have dear friends that work in Adams Morgan and the situation there is getting worse by the week - several shootings ON the strip of 18th, not to mention in the surrounding blocks just within the past MONTH - it is beyond ridiculous.
I was talking with my friend who works at Bossa, and she voiced her concern as to why there are flyers circulating in the restaurants & bars in the area as to what the Adams Morgan Flag should look like, when there needs to be flyers about a neighborhood watch - POSTINGS everywhere telling these thugs that they are being watched and they are not welcome. It is not enough that there is a police station on the corner of 18th & Columbia - bullets flew through that alley and hit Madams Organ just weeks ago at prime time, not after midnite! It's time for true Unity in our neighborhoods - including residents and establishments!

Erika

I have a feeling it's just going to get worse over Inauguration week, with the tsunami of new targets in the city....

The reward has been increased to $50,000. We have been posting flyers all over the area--from Howard, North Cap. and Florida, Cardoza, Logan, Rhode Island, 14th and even 17th where Durval was before he went home. I will continue to post flyers until this town is plastered.

He was brutally shot twice in the front-center of his forehead, twice in the side of the head and once through the neck. Execution style. Was this a gang initiation? Someone in the neighborhood has to have seen and/or heard something. Durval must have screamed for help and had his wallet clutched in his hand most likely begging the killer(s) to spare his life. PLEASE! If anyone heard or saw anything at 11th and Q. PLEASE CALL THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS:

Call Det. Paul Regan at (202) 425-5563 (cell) or (202) 645-0472 or Det. Doug Carlson on (202) 486-0233 (cell) or (202) 645-6360; if you’d prefer to stay anonymous, call 1-888-919-2746 or send a text to 50411.

I agree with Erika, we must organize some sort of group to stem this. I've lived in this area for 12 years and I've been familiar with it for 25 years, and it is getting worse again.
