Weekly Music Agenda
Clubs and musicians take holidays too. As a result, it's a pretty quiet week around town. If you've got any other suggestions, let us know in the comments.
MONDAY
>> Yell County's power pop and The Bickersons' self-described Crunk start off this holiday week at Galaxy Hut. 9 p.m. Get a basket of tots and a fine brew and settle in for the show.
>> We love Mark Charles Heidinger and the million bands he plays with. Catch his main occupation, Vandaveer, at Iota this evening, with Evan Dando of the Lemonheads, and Jesse Mills. 8:30 p.m., $20. While you're over at Vandaveer's site, be sure to grab his Christmas EP.
TUESDAY
>> Need some noise to take the edge off all that last minute wrapping? Visit the Velvet Lounge for Babykiller Estelle (whose noise is a bit more aggressive) and Janel & Anthony (who tend towards the ethereal). $7, 9:30 p.m.
WEDNESDAY
>> Nothing says ho ho ho like a hip hop night at The Red & the Black. Join brownmonkeymusic.com, Flex Matthews and other guests for the Christmas Eve Mashout. $8
THURSDAY
>> XXXMasTaint. What more could we say that the name doesn't imply? As always, Taint is an alternative dance night for queer boys and girls at DC9. $5, 9 p.m.
FRIDAY
>> As described by Gypsy Eyes Records, Fiaso is "known for their chaotic live shows and technical proficiency... they've been described as a mix of punk, noise, and math rock, and have traveled to Austin for SXSW and as far as Bosnia for the Sarajevo Film Festival. However, their favorite places to play are people's houses." Mr. Tiggles and the Beefe Bong Band also play. Comet Ping Pong. $5, 9:30 p.m.
>> It's a free rock 'n' roll dance night at the Black Cat! Head up to the main stage to push the egg nog out of your system with the PBR that rightfully belongs there. 9:30 p.m.
>> As part of the Kennedy Center’s Hanukkah celebration, Golem will meld speedy Eastern European Jewish klezmer music with Eastern European Gypsy music and some good ol’ American punk. The free one-hour show starts at 6 p.m. at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage.
SATURDAY
>> The weekend after Christmas almost always sees local clubs filled up with local bands. This year is no different. On one stage (the 9:30 Club), The Dance Party helps New Rock Church of Fire celebrate the release of their new full length album. On another (the Black Cat), Olivia Mancini and the Terrible Two (formerly The Housemates) join Tereu Tereu (***) and Revival. Either show will be a perfect way to digest all the holiday candy you're almost tired of -- one a keyed up party of grand proportions, the other a more even keel way to regain your bearings. The 9:30 Club show will run you $15, the Black Cat's $10.
>> The Alabama-born self-styled “King of Southern Soul” Sir Charles Jones comes to the area for an evening of his modern but bluesy keyboard and guitar accompanied tales of sluts and lotharios at Lamonts, a great place off of Indian Head Highway that doesn't have a website. 4400 Livingston Road in Pomonkey, Md, 301-283-0225.
>> Krezi Mizik, a polished R&B-influenced pop Haitian duo will be joined by local Haitian band Rafrechi at 10:00 PM at the Tabeer Restaurant (inside La Union Mall), 1401 University Blvd., Hyattsville, 240-793-2670.
SUNDAY
>> Stuart Lupton and his ever-evolving take on rock, country and blues has been a figure on the D.C. music scene for a while now. See what he's been up to on the Black Cat's backstage with J Marinelli and George Karos. $8, 9 p.m.
>> If all you want for Christmas is to have a lovely Parisian woman sing to you in a flirty, melancholy whisper over electro beats, then you have lucked out big time. Elodie does just that at DC9 this weekend, along with Ole' and DJ Ca$$idy. $10, 8 p.m.
Steve Kiviat contributed to this week's agenda.
