The Redskins may have been eliminated from the playoffs with a Falcons win yesterday afternoon, but a 10-3 win against division-rival Philadelphia Eagles gave fans who are still paying attention an excuse to smile.
The 'Skins win was hardly a barn-burner, but sweeping Philly is a feat in of itself, and it was a relief to end the three-game skid. To keep with the holiday cheer, there is a bit of pleasure knowing that the Redskins win made it far more difficult for the Eagles to make the playoffs. It's a reach to find positives at this point, but misery loves company.
The game was a defensive struggle - and was perfect for those baking holiday cookies, decorating a tree and/or frying latkes. An occasional glance sufficed, as both offenses failed to produce much of anything.

While the offense continued to struggle to move the ball, the Redskins’ defense put together a great show for the last home game of the season. The defensive unit, which had been criticized for their poor play during the recent losing streak, held the Eagles to no touchdowns for the first time this season. Even Jason Taylor, who admitted he has not been worth his contract, had two sacks and a forced fumble, which set up the only touchdown of the game.
Clinton Portis finished with 70 yards rushing and a touchdown, and everyone’s favorite chubby punter had what turned out to be a great game.
But the game was not without typical Redskins drama. On the last play, the Eagles had a chance to tie the game. McNabb’s pass to Reggie Brown on the 1-yard line came up short, as Fred Smoot and Laron Landry combined for the hit, leaving the Eagles inches from a touchdown.
The win guaranteed that the self-proclaimed “worst coach in America,” Jim Zorn, will not end his first season below 500. Will an 8-8 or 9-7 record be enough incentive for Dan Snyder to keep him around? Only time will tell, but if mediocrity means you lose your job, de-facto GM Vinny Cerato must be giving Danny mean foot rubs.

9-7 is better than the 7-scallops i was sure we were gonna end up with. The skins always seem to win when nothing is on the line, pride went out a while ago so not even that was a motivating factor. Sweeping the eagles is enough to keep me a satisfied skins fan till next year, when we will win the superbowl...again.
