The ABC7 report is short on details but the confirmation nevertheless stands: Route 50 to Washington Boulevard will be closed during the inauguration. Left unexplained is where, when, and who.
The report doesn't clarify whether any or all of New York Ave will be closed for the inauguration. For this Google drawing, I arbitrarily set the Ellipse as the eastern terminus, but a better guess is that Constitution Avenue is totally closed and New York Avenue is left unmolested.
The Examiner mentioned on Christmas Day that Arlington County was was considering closing Route 50. The ABC7 report doesn't say who shut down the road. District and Arlington County officials acting in concert?
There's also no clarification for how long Route 50 will be closed. For as long as District roads remain a parking lot, presumably?
As for why, the question answers itself. Even as Metro officials expect as many as 120,000 riders an hour during the inauguration, public officials are still trying to do their damnedest to ease gridlock and provide clearance for emergency vehicles on non-official business in the area. Arlington County officials now have a new question to answer: Where will they re-route the route 50 traffic?

I wish I could make it down for this!
I don't know what you guys did to this site, but it's REALLY broken. It took an hour just to sign in, and there is no more link to get to older entries.
i fear change. wtf is going on with the website?
look at the spiffy new dcist. is the layout change for all -ists? it's still same 'ole phillyist up north right now...
Why so change? Me so scared. Site so cluttered... [cry]
Please, please, please stop screwing with the site layout! It's too cluttered now, and the new features offer no benefit. At least Campbell Brown's gone, I guess.
The site looks great on Firefox. Thanks!
To answer your question... If route 50 is closed, then there is no traffic on route 50. Therefore, there's no traffic to redirect. Problem solved! I could sooooo work in government.
I believe they should ban all driving in the entire county for that day.
That way there will be no traffic anywhere!
In fact that might be a good solution for every day rush hours! No driving from 7am - 7pm.
new site looks good on my end. i did have to zoom it in, though--i'm old and the font is small.
Uggg, for what it's worth, I much prefer the old site design, in every single way. This is way too cluttered. I know we all hate change, but I really thought the old way looked great.
Hey, where did the previous page links go? Guys, you post way too many times a day to take away the links to previous pages.
Gosh, Obama isn't even here yet and there is already change in Washington!
where did the 'recommended' link go? i liked that. :/
not a fan of the new layout, DCist. i feel like the original site went through the dryer and shrunk like a bad christmas sweater.
Will try later on Firefox. No good on explorer. The old was much better IMO.
Where is my 'Morning Roundup: Whinge about the new site design edition'? This really grinds my gears.
The gothamist.com site has links for previous pages, so hopefully they'll be making an appearance here in the near future. In the meantime, you can find previous pages manually, by following this link and changing the page number: http://dcist.com/index2.php
Ah ha! Thanks for the info HCE. Hopefully it's just an issue of working out the kinks in the new design.
Go Home Already: New site upgrades, slower pages, cramped layouts, new icons, and the whiny, impatient, infantile, commenters like me who can't handle change.
Hey commenters and DCist: the problem with not seeing new posts isn't that there aren't any there - check out the RSS feed, there are at least 3 new posts today, the problem is they're not showing up on DCist.com. Quirks with the new software I assume.
Now that I say that I looked closer at my RSS feed and it's actually posts from Gothamist in NYC not DCist. So who knows.
This lack of new DCist reporting is putting a serious crimp on my at-work goofing off.
Is it just me, or does every other web site manage to do development and testing BEFORE switching over to the live site? Also: Go Eagles!!
What happened to the baby panda?
Also, at least in Explorer the new design looks somewhat like the old design did when the page wasn't loading properly.
WHAT THE HELL !! i go away for a SECOND ..
i go away for a couple days, and i come back to find that the new layout is pretty damn neat!
i like the fact that the stupid panda default icon is gone (and why the hell can't you people choose an icon for yourselves!)
i like the fact that the comments are kind of "threaded" now.
i like it a lot!
