Two Fatal Shootings in Northwest

Two fatal shootings have been reported in Northwest D.C. within twelve hours of each other. The first happened at about 4:30 p.m. on Monday at 4th and V Streets NW, just a block or so away from the Howard University campus. Authorities say police officers arrived at the scene and found 20-year-old David Christopher Holmes, who was not a Howard University student, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Holmes was pronounced dead later at a local hospital. So far police say they have no specific motive in the case.

The second shooting occurred at about 3:30 a.m. near the skate park at 11th and Q Streets NW, which is adjacent to Shaw Junior High School. NBC4's early report is scant on details other than that an officer heard gunshots and found a body at the scene. Reader Chris wrote in to provide a few more pieces of the puzzle:

My girlfriend and I were awakened at 3:30 a.m. this morning by 3rd District cops who were canvassing our block (1100 block of Q Street NW) for anybody who'd heard gunfire or seen anything unusual. I noticed at the time that police tape was stretched across Q Street and that there were three police cars and one van...and about 6 cops going door-to-door. (Which is somewhat silly since there are only 8-9 doors on the street, but I guess it's faster).

Going back upstairs, I looked out toward 11 St. -- which was also taped off -- and saw a body in the crosswalk on the north side of the intersection, right in front of the skate park.

No word yet on the victim's identity or any potential leads.
