Late last week the Examiner delved into one of the remaining unanswered questions standing between D.C. residents and the handguns they are now allowed to have -- the stores where they can buy them.
The paper reported that the D.C. Zoning Commission has decided that gun shops will be allowed in all of the District's four quadrants, though they will be limited to industrial zones and commercial corridors not zoned for neighborhood retail. Additionally, no gun shop will be allowed within 300 feet of a school, library, home, playground or church. The rules were passed as an emergency measure, meaning that they're only in force until March, after which the commission has promised a public hearing to decide on a final set of regulations. The new rules are less restrictive than a proposal floated late last year that would have imposed even more onerous geographic and zoning restrictions on gun shops.
So after city officials break out the measuring tape and zoning maps, where will the gun shops end up?
In Ward 8, thanks to the 300-foot buffer, the only viable locations for gun stores are near Blue Plains deep in Southwest, at Suitland Parkway and Interstate 295, and in historic Anacostia off Shannon Place, according to a report from the D.C. planning office. A large chunk of Southwest between Independence Avenue and Interstate 395 is fair game, as is the New York Avenue corridor from Florida Avenue almost to the Maryland line. It's either hilarious or heinous to think that Georgetown might see a gun shop before an Apple store. There's also a tiny plot along Connecticut Avenue NW in Van Ness, a cluster of parcels off Wisconsin Avenue just north of McLean Gardens, another plot off Wisconsin near Observatory Circle, and a small piece of M Street in Georgetown, again near Wisconsin Avenue. Downtown, between Pennsylvania Avenue and M Street as far west as 20th Street also is available for potential gun store business — though either side of 16th Street is off-limits.

Real World Cast Reportedly Arriving

No fair! Ward 8 gets all the cool stuff.
Gun store, gun store, liquor store, gun store -- where the fuck you takin' me?!
time to start taking bets on where the first one ends up.
i'm going with new york ave in ivy city for first choice, with somewhere near l'enfant plaza as a close runner up.
georgetown-not so much. not because of opposition, but because it would just be too expensive. unless the NRA is willing to raise the membership fees on all their members so they can pay millions to set up a store at M and wisconsin when nathan's closes up shop...
Well, they better hurry up and put that gun shop at Florida and New York. They got condos going up there, and I need to be able to buy me a .357 to go with my Litteri's sammitch and Orangina.
How about a drive-thru shop in the 395 tunnel? Plenty of times I've wanted a gun when I'm trapped in there.
I'm psyched. I can go get my gun, then be poised to hold up the richest people and stores in the city! Viva Capitalism!
I think we can all rally around the possibility of the Smith Point crowd being thinned-out a bit...with extreme prejudice...

Damn, I was hoping for a shop right next to JP's. But that's probably close enough.
I'd love for Nathan's to be replaced by a gun store. From overpriced food to overpriced ammo; from explosive diarrhea after the blue cheese burger to explosive ammunition from a Glock; from "Hey babe, come here often?" to "Hey babe, wanna touch my smoking barrel?".
Ok, I think I'm done for now.
Wait, I take that back. JP's isn't too far from Observatory Circle. It'll make things so much easier for disgruntled customers after they get kicked out of the club. Because dousing the assistant manager and setting him on fire is just too time consuming.

You mean in place of JP's? It is still a burnt shell and word has it that they're not planning on rebuilding.
Also, I don't think I understand what a commercial corridor not zoned for neighborhood retail is. Aren't the commercial corridors of G-town and G Lover Park zoned for neighborhood retail?
the old Adams Morgan vendomat would be perfect, but I think an upscale firearms boutique in Georgetown would go over well- maybe an H&K next to the H&M, a Smith & Wesson near Dean & Deluca, or a "Tecberry".
It's either hilarious or heinous to think that Georgetown might see a gun shop before an Apple store.
Why does it always have to be either/or with you people? Why can't you have an Apple Store that also sells guns? I would totally buy an iGun. Granted, it wouldn't have copy/paste, and you'd need some $30 dongle to fire it, but the user interface would be completely intuitive. Based on who you've previously killed, it would use "predictive shooting" to eliminate any threats before you even know you're in danger. Kinda sucks that the 16 bullet version costs $200 more than the 8 bullet version, and you can only buy bullets through the iShoot Store, but that's all anyone needs to protect themselves anyway. And besides it comes in all those cool colors.
I am really looking forward to seeing the historically accurate architectural design for Ye Olde Georgetown Musket and Muzzle-Loader Shoppe. They can keep things even more historic by making all the employees wear knee breeches and braids with bows.
Just don't call it "Federal" style. It's all about the quasi-statelike entities' rights!
What the fuck. Looks like my comment never got posted.
Anyway, it was along the lines of....it's stupid that pistols (things that can actually increase violent assaults) are now legal, yet lapdances (completely harmless nudie bar shenanigan) are still very illegal. Our priorities for this city are out of whack.
I'm 100% for armed lapdancers in the city!
"Ladies! Let's give it up for Bang-Bang Bart!"
"Ew! You're fat!"
"Just more of me to love."
How about one of those empty spots on M St. between Ozio and Camelot? That strikes me as a block with gun shop written all over it.
So if a potentially legal spot in north of McLean Gardens on Wisconsin, doesn't that risk a disgruntled Fannie Mae employee going in to load up on some weaponry? AND there's a post office right across the street too. Double bonus.
that's close to sidwell friends too, right? if so, scratch that off the list.
The illegal ammo traders in violent neighborhoods within DC must be REALLY pissed about gun shops opening up. It's bad for business.
Side note: you all should listen to the This American Life podcast about the illegal ammo seller in Chicago.
Damn, places on the list include both my neighborhood and office. If this is the steep price for getting FiOS first .... I'll take it.
It's about time--the transfer process in DC is a pain/expensive without a licensed dealer in the city. Also, what about a shooting range? It would be nice to be able to practice with our blasters...
They should open up on 8th St., SE...I mean "Barracks Row." About a half dozen store fronts have become available in the past 3 mo. sigh.
There isn't a range in DC, but there are several in the surrounding area, including some that allow rifles.
this will give a whole new meaning to Late Night Shots.
The NRA range is in Fairfax, I think.
Is Georgetown still the second most crime-ridden neighborhood in DC?
Just askin' podner; don't go reachin' for yore shootin' iron ....
At this rate, Georgetown will get a gun store before an Apple Store.
