Circuit City: Now With 100% More Liquidation!

Those in the market for a big, flat screen TV before they typically go on sale the day after the Super Bowl might be in luck -- Circuit City, after a horrible spell of mismanagement and failed merger talks, announced that they will be shuttering their doors. The beleaguered retailer is also immediately liquidating their entire inventory of stock at every store, including their rather Beltway-tastic cadre of outposts in the D.C. area shown above.

Consumerist has a pretty good roundup of the most pertinent questions that customers will have -- yes, your warranty is fine, but if you've got gift cards, we'd use them pretty swiftly -- a more exhaustive corporate FAQ can be found at Circuit CIty's now defunct website.

DCist tried to get a grasp on stock levels at stores around the area this morning, but it appears as if CIrcuit City's phone system may also be part of the liquidation -- after navigating the labyrinth of touchtone options, we were place on hold and subsquently disconnected. Twice.

That said, while you may be able to get some small deals, don't be misled by expectations of outrageous discounts promised in advertisements -- the normal liquidation procedure is to mark up current inventory by significant amounts, then mark down from that inflated figure. If you're planning a purchase you should certainly take a look -- but always price check other retailers before splurging on a "fantastic" liquidation deal.

there is (was) a circuit city in the district? color me surprised.

Even with the liquidation "discounts" their prices are still way higher than if you buy the same thing online. Often i'll go into the store, check out a product, and then buy it from Amazon and save 25-50% .. I've been using this site to find some good deals online:

http://www.zingsale.com

It's a site that tracks prices of products from online stores (like amazon) and sends you an email when the price drops.
