Some 15,000 people showed up on a cold day at D.C.'s RFK Stadium Monday to answer President Barack Obama's call to service, in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty encouraged District residents to participate in the massive event, where volunteers helped assemble 75,000 kits containing food and personal items for soldiers serving overseas.

they weren't all DC residents. lots of people from all over the country.
Nowhere in the write up does it say they were all D.C. residents Phil. It says the mayor of the District of Columbia encouraged District residents to particpate, but it doesn't say that's where they were all from. Don't worry, D.C. residents won't get all the credit.
Um, except for the first photo caption, which reads "D.C. residents showed up en masse to volunteer at RFK Stadium on Monday."
I went to this. It was a bit of volunteer theater. Step 1: Stand/sit around for an hour. Step 2: Hold ziplock bag while people place 4 items in them. Step 3: Hand bag to another person. It takes about 20 seconds. You could go through the bag line more than once, but you didn't have to. Then you got a goodie bag including a delicious Obama brownie. The cost of running this volunteer day far exceeded the cost of having a few machines do this. Like I said, feel good volunteer theater, but maybe it will inspire people.
