District residents are understandably disturbed by yesterday's lead revelations in the Washington Post, and the D.C. Council has gone ahead and scheduled a hearing to address environmental and health concerns. The Committee on Government Operations and the Environment hearing is set for February 10 at 11 a.m. at the John A. Wilson Building, Room 412. Committee chair Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) will hold the hearing jointly with Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), who oversees WASA.

The Post also follows up today with the D.C. Council's request that the city's inspector general open an investigation into whether WASA and public health agencies "negligently or intentionally" misled the public during the initial lead scare in 2004.

I'd be happy to give the Council a "lead probe," although it's not the one they're expecting and they'll probably end up walking funny for a week.

in all seriousness, this is an important matter, a place where legislative oversight really needs to be directed.

Yeah. Good luck with that. Dude says if you're house was built before 1987, you shouldn't drink unfiltered water. Where TF has the Council been for the past twenty friggin years? I fully expect them to designate lead as a "mineral," up the daily recommended dosage, and claim victory in the War on Intelligence.

i drink DC tap water every day at work at a very old office building because we don't get "filtered" water. and here i am, not wanting to "waste" resources buying and throwing out plastic water bottles several times a day. i drink it from the bathroom faucet. it feels dirty just writing that.

Well, I've drunk DC tap water my entire life and it never did me any harm. Except for slight psychological maladjustment and blurred vision. Ah, WASA! I owe my robust physique to your spigots of hot milky turbid goo that smells of bleach and failure. Why do you think BBQ'in With My Honey Rap Snaks are so sweet and pungent? Why, to get the flavor of DC tap water out of your mouth, of course! Now, where's my Pina Colada Blunt?
