What with all the special events and holidays of the last couple of months, Metro riders have had it relatively easy in terms of major weekend track work delays. That all ends in February, when Metro will begin a big track rehabilitation project at the Pentagon station during the President’s Day holiday weekend, along with other maintenance projects. Metro's announcement can be found here. Bottom line info is below, but remember that this advance schedule is subject to change.
Friday, February 6, to Sunday, February 8
Red Line customers traveling between Silver Spring and Forest Glen should expect 20 minute delays due to work replacing rail fasteners. Trains will share one track between the two stations from 8 p.m., Friday, February 6, to midnight on Sunday, February 8.
Friday, February 13, to Monday, February 16
The big Pentagon project is set to begin, which will actually close the Pentagon station entirely for three days, starting that Friday, February 13 at 10 p.m. to midnight on Monday, February 16. Metro will provide free shuttle bus service between the Pentagon City, Pentagon, and L’Enfant Plaza stations. Planned work includes replacing rail switches, fasteners and stud bolts. Blue and Yellow Line riders, take special note of the closure -- trains will not even pass through the station all weekend.
Friday, February 20 to Sunday, February 22
The same Red Line work between the Silver Spring and Forest Glen stations continue this weekend. Plan for 20 minute delays from 8 p.m., Friday, February 20, to midnight on Sunday, February 22.
Friday, February 27, to Sunday, March 1
This time it's switch maintenance work at the Mount Vernon Sq-7th St Convention Center and the U Street/African-Amer Civil War Memorial/Cardozo stations. No station closures this time, though, but expect 30 minute delays as trains single track between the two stations from 10 p.m., Friday, February 27, to midnight on Sunday, March 1.

I'm still unclear as to why the bulk of this work can't be completed during weekday off-hours, between 1am and 5am.
Because they're lazy and they suck? Sorry, I mean, because they belong to a union?
Because it takes them an hour and half to set up before starting real work and another hour and a half to get ready for trains to run when they're done. There's not exactly a lot of time left over for doing actual repairs.
4 hours is barely enough time for metro to power down the tracks and move the heavy equipment into position, let alone get any work done. Switch replacement takes at least a full day given all of the people, parts and, processes involved.
At least it's not during the first beautiful weekends of Spring - when I actually venture out of my home.
Well, fine...you go ahead and shoot down my argument with your (finger air quotes) FACTS, and (finger air quotes) LOGIC. I guess I have no recourse but to shake my fist and mumble incoherently under my breath. Where's my crackpipe???
There is a point when screwing with a photograph in Photoshope leads to disaster.
more reasons to get out of town president's day weekend. or just stay in old town. parade anyone?
Wait, I'm confused. Will the yellow/blue line terminate service at Pentagon City w/in VA? or is there a secret tunnel to bypass the Pentagon station entirely? I'm thinking it's the former.
Nope, there's a secret tunnel that used to be used by gun runners looking to distribute firearms into DC...it's gone dormant since DC legalized guns. Yay progress!!!!
