- WMATA's chief of staff, Shiva Pant, tells local urbanist blog Greater Greater Washington it still isn't considered a media outlet by the transit agency, despite an appeal, because they don't "disseminate news to the general public." We're reading that decision as WMATA claiming the web site doesn't have enough readers (they report they have 2000-2100 daily visitors), but agree that Pant's argument about the nature of web sites is seriously flawed -- read the whole thing.
- In case you missed it, the PIC has announced there will be a "Neighborhood Inaugural Ball" at the Washington Convention Center on Jan. 20, with some significant amount of tickets going to D.C. residents. Details on the number of tickets and how to apply for them are still being worked out.
- There's a lot of evil Twitter spam and other Twitter-related tomfoolery going on the last couple of days, so don't click on any suspicious links in your Tweets.
- The Historic Preservation Review Board has unanimously approved Ellis Development’s plans to rehabilitate, restore and expand Shaw’s historic Howard Theater, reports DCmud.
- Aren't you psyched for sleet and freezing rain?? We know you are!
- We Love DC spots a DPR sign heralding the coming, at long last, of formal improvements to the informal "S Street Dog Park" in Dupont.

Howard Theater. That's great news. The only "shows" you can see there now are public urination, vagrancy and public drinking on our very own Skid Row.
i'm still being logged out of the site every time i close my browser (i know, sommer, i should be patient!). just wanted to make sure someone there knew this is still a problem. anyone else having the same issue?
That photo reminds me of the wonderful Improv Everywhere prank where they arranged for over 60 of their agent-volunteers to infiltrate a multi-story retail building on the Union Square in NYC and stand in the big windows and then perform synchronized movements at pre-arranged times, much to the bewilderment and delight of passersby who happened to look up. See video and description here:

The DC gov't issues media/press ID cards to bonafide media outlets. Does Greater Greater Washington's blogger have such an ID showing that he'd a bonafide media representative?
can you define "bonafide" in this case? i think the changes of the last decade in how we receive our news probably renders any old definition of the term moot.
I think in this case "bonafide media representative" translates to "corporate media whore shill who wouldn't know 'news' if it stood on a stack of the collected works of H.L. Mencken and peed in their faces." Y'know, real news outlets like Fox, OK!, Teen People Magazine, Ranger Rick, and Highlights. That Goofus, he'll never get his $h!t together.
According to the DC Dept of Correction's online media policy, "media" is:
1) A general circulation newspaper
2) A news magazine having national, regional, or local circulation
3) Broadcast radio and television stations licensed by the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC)
4) A news wire service
5) A licensed cable television service
6) A private or independent media company
7) A freelance reporter
I can't find the DC regs online, but I'm guessing the definition is similar to that of DC's DOC.
Some blogs (such at Prince of Petworth, which is an LLC) would seem to fit the above definition.
if PoP fits the definition, then ggw certainly does.
Is anyone actually shocked that WMATA administrators probably don't even know what a blog is? It's not like they haven't been corrupt with ignorance for most of their existence.
Considering it took them decades to upgrade their website to 1998 levels of unusability, no.
If I wanted an indecipherable tent full of Acrobat files, I would have just gone to Cirque du Solei.
